1. Give your character at least one defining characteristic 2. Give your character a distinct way of communicating or speaking 3. Give your character a place 4. Create small antagonist characters 5. Create a character that serves as an emotional attachment to the main character 6. Create a character that serves as an emotional attachment for the audience 7. Create a origin story for the character
Fact check: there were 2 planets in the movie, but one got blown up...also Han shot first. All jokes aside, you really hit the nail on the head with this one. The world of Star Wars is so rich with detail and that's to a number of people's credit. Costume designer John Mollo is to thank for the diverse and unique looks of all the different alien species and their languages and associated sounds are none other than the work of Ben Burt (along with all Star Wars sound effects). I totally agree that none of the side characters seem pointless, in fact almost all of them are memorable. Here we've got a movie that had just the perfect group of talented crew members at the beginning of their careers to make a populated setting that feels truly alive. Outstanding work here. I think I just finished watching my new favorite video of yours (and not just cause its Star Wars).
+Sean Barlow fact check back: I said "went to" as in "walked around on" therefore I am correct. Lol And thanks for the comment! I really enjoyed working on this one.
Han shot first, correct. However, history was rewritten in the new release. They added a shot of Greedo drawing his pistol, justifying Han's murder of Greedo. Make sure you erase the original event from your memory before the next "Two Minute Hate!"
Wonderful! Just yesterday I gave a lecture on the story structure of Star Wars (I am teaching at a university) and your film nailed the concept of supporting characters. Thank you very much - I'll forward this to my students :-)
This is one of the things I like about the prequels. Even if you feel the characters were underdeveloped or dry or whatever, you still remember those characters for some reason. I mean, it's one thing to remember characters like Darth Maul, General Grievous, or Mace Windu. But you somehow remember characters like Sebulba, Jango Fett, and Newt Gunray. Which is why George Lucas, to me, is a very complicated yet interesting person. He has cool ideas but he uses too many of them and doesn't know when to say to himself "....yeah, that sounds stupid". He has great ideas on characters but he must rely on his actors and/or better focused people to really broaden them further. And I think you get the idea.

I love when people summarize good videos.
It makes it so much easier to refer back, later.
Thanks!
cool!

I feel that a lot more people should watch your videos. You have a truly fascinating insight of movies and storytelling.

This is fantastic. It's good for the story I'm currently writing. Thanks for this.

Great points, great video, I am very glad that I subscribed recently.
What an amazing video!
Wow you're content is really good! You should see if you could work with "The Closer Look" sometime.
You could also study the Coens for this.
