Love Love Love, thank you so much for putting this side by side with AE. I've been struggling with other tutorials on Nuke and end up being so confused, this was perfect. Don't apologize for the length, anyone who really appreciates the knowledge will watch no matter how long. Please keep this series coming, I feel that I am out growing AE because of the 32 float and having to use noise effect to remove banding etc. Project files to follow along would be cool! Thank you so much again.
Thank for tutorials man, I work professionally in post in LA but I found out all the big boys play with Nuke and not After effects so here I am ready to switch over just like I did in editing when i switched to Avid. And I thought learning another software was done with HA! So far you are the best I've found! Thanks! Subscribed!
21:21 Probably the most important thing to have enabled in Ae. Gamma 1.0 checked as well as color bit depth 32bpc float. Thank you for this video, now I know why my Ae comps always looked weird.
Besides the awesome tut in general, info, pace etc, what is hard to see these days is the way you speak, the mouse movement, the calm voice! Everything, Welldone! Keep it up!!!
I love both (Nuke and AE) of them and I am always struggling while starting new projects to choose one of them, that's why i am searching "adobe after effects and nuke linking" on youtube and found your video. Big Thanks to you(HUGO's DESK channel) for starting this initiative.
Your videos and tutorials about nuke are the best on you tube so far! Thank very much for them. I really enjoy them. They are great for learning the nuke what I really need. Love that software! Need to know more!
Thanks so much for you kind words. I try my best to make as many tutorials as I can but I am a very buys artist so I can only do it in my spare time. Thanks again for watching. More to come every week.
I’m at uni doing a vfx masters, I’ve been doing it since september and absolutely struggled with nuke, I just couldn’t get it, one watch of this and I finally understand, thank you
Thank you so much Hugo. I'm new on Nuke and you made it too easy to understand the differences between both programs, I will continue watching your tutorials, thanks again!

as an after effects artist i really enjoyed this video tutorial, it had always been a mystery to me trying to know the core differences between AE and Nuke. I think you should me a lot of the differences, hope to see more of these tutorials in the future !
I normally watch vfx tutorials at 1.5 speed or 2x speed because the artist speaks way too slowly, repeats information too much, or generally just doesn't cut to the chase. None of these were the case with your video. Straight to the point, well-paced, and packed with a ton of useful information. Truly setting a new standard for tutorials on the internet. Happily subscribed.
Thanks so much. Well, I could do a full course but I am too busy working full time. Maybe one day. Maybe if I can get enough money in Patreon or Kickstarter. Cheers
You got a new sub! Your videos are amazing! I am currently working in Finance, but damn, It is time to learn how to properly use Nuke! Cheers from Italy!
Hi Hugo's Desk Big thanks For sharing this great explication give the difference between nuke and after effect . really helpful to me to start learning nuke with good thatcher.
Thanks so much. I will be launching a full AE2NUKE course very soon. Please spread the word so I can continue making videos. Please support me for as low as $1 per month. www.patreon.com/hugosdesk
This may be a stupid question and i know the answer for movies and live action compositing, but why did you do the this project in Nuke or AE? Why not just render the final version with all the effects in 3D? And the longer your videos the better, i love to learn!
Well you should never render directly from 3D because it’s very un-flexible in Post. Having a compositing stage means you can do minor tweak, colour corrections and add live action plates to the CG. It is a very common practice to have a CG and A Comp stage.
Well thanks for the feedback but it takes a long time to make high quality videos. Specially with my full time job as a Director and VFX supervisor. I wish I could do more but currently I simply do not have enough support in Patreon or RUclips to make longer or more videos. Currently making less then $30 per month in support so I am doing this pretty much for free at this stage. With time maybe I can get more support. Thanks mate
+Basti Tycoon Thanks so much mate. Yes I will be at FMX once again. My 5th year in a row and my second time presenting. I am making a Nuke Foundry Workshop. More info soon.
Great vid Hugo. I am wondering if you have any good tips on handling footage in AE in the way Nuke does? I am still using both for different shots and finding AE is not great at colour management for Alexa footage, and I'm don't seem to have a bulletproof solution for adding elements (sRGB or otherwise) and outputting a LogC file for the grade. Nuke handles this well and had no complaints from those shots. Slightly off topic question I know...maybe I just have to be better!
Really nice tutorial. I would like to know more about 3d passes in Nuke, how you connect all the render passes - AO, reflection, SSS etc. Also, I am wondering, because I think in perspective, to learn a software that later I can afford... is it hard to buy Nuke, do the VFX work can get me all the licenses I need because for example Fusion 9 is much cheaper...
+Soham Dutta Well After Effects has a special place in my heart. It's my first app. Version 3.5 or 4. Can't remember, lol. It's pretty good for some tasks like Motion
Hi Hugo! First of all a big big thanks for your Videos, always very helpfull and inspirational. I'm also Portuguese and very very happy to see another Mate being sucessful. I'm a long time AE user and at about 6 months making the transition to Nuke. No doubt AT ALL about Nuke being much much better at compositing but still stuck with some projects with Element 3D Plugin for AE. Can you please advise if Nuke is also a good solution about importing Geometry, as well as with all the process of texturing, etc? Very sorry for the big text. Keep up the excelent work. Big Thanks in advance. bye
Thanks so much for your kind works. Obrigado. Nuke can import and run any geometry from OBJ to FBX to Alembic Caches so it is a great link with Maya or any 3D application. I would not advice rendering 3D in Nuke since there are much better 3D apps out there. But so you know you do have VRay and RenderMan for Nuke. Cheers and thanks for the support.
Hey Hugo, I see you've written here you're already working on episode 2! This was months ago now are there more of these? Cheers, keep up the good work!
+Aron Durkin I did started but I have been so busy with payed work that I had to put it on hold. You know, as much as I love to make videos for you guys the problem is that You Tube pays so so little that when I have Director or VFX work I have to prioritise. I usually get about 2 or 3 dollars per video and that is if the video gets 5K views. So very difficult to make time for free content when I have work. Sorry about that. But it will come, don't worry. Thanks for the support anyway.
Do you have any more in this series? I've been trying to get into Nuke from AE, but it's a lot to take in...stuff from the perspective of an AE user is really helpful.
Hi Hugo, fantastic tutorial. I am a student who is interested in visual effects for both a career but also personal projects. Right now I am using After Effects but I want to switch to a node based system. Would you recommend learned nuke or fusion?
Thanks so much. Well I would recommend Nuke since it is Industry standard and use by the majority of the VFX studios. I am actually about the launch a AE2NUKE course. Would you be interested?
,so, i have a problem, i started 2d animating and vfx fire and explosion simulation, i use 3ds max after effects, photoshop, and am planning to start learning nuke for 3d purposes but can i cotrol them all i mean can i learn all of this programs?
+WildChickenTV really depends of what you are after. VFx companies have artists specialised in specific softwares. So a FX artist does not do Comp. a modeller does not do rendering, a matte painter does not do animation etc etc. If you work in a smaller company and you want to be a generalist then you will probably know a bit of everything. You know what I mean? Either a master of 1 task or master of none.
+Erick Alves I have a network connecting then all. Also using a RAID system for my media files shared across the network. It's a Caldigit dual T3 24tb RAID. Also using Synergy to control all machines with one mouse and keyboard.
Love Love Love, thank you so much for putting this side by side with AE. I've been struggling with other tutorials on Nuke and end up being so confused, this was perfect. You're welcome!

Don't worry about these being too long. These are awesome! Can't wait for the next one
21:21 Probably the most important thing to have enabled in Ae.
Gamma 1.0 checked as well as color bit depth 32bpc float.
Thank you for this video, now I know why my Ae comps always looked weird.

I love both (Nuke and AE) of them and I am always struggling while starting new projects to choose one of them, that's why i am searching "adobe after effects and nuke linking" on youtube and found your video.
Big Thanks to you(HUGO's DESK channel) for starting this initiative.
Fantastic way of comparing them. Big Kudos!
Extremely helpful! Can't wait for moaaare :) Would love to hear about deep compositing
Your videos and tutorials about nuke are the best on you tube so far! Thank very much for them. I really enjoy them. They are great for learning the nuke what I really need. Love that software! Need to know more!

+Javier Santos Thanks so much mate. I hope the series helps people using both apps
Thank you so much for this, as I am planning to switch from AE to Nuke as my primary compositing software. Please keep the tutorials coming.

Excellent Tuto, I hope to see the next one ! Your french shirt is very nice too !

I have a question. what is a stereo compositor? is that any difference between stereo and normal compositor?
I have a BenQ AMVA panel
Great monitors with amazing contrast & colors.. & the black levels beat most IPS screens

How to match AE rgba output in the nuke with comping all layers used in AE

Great video Hugo, funny thing, I am actually about to get a monitor and was looking at BenQ's monitors too. Which models are you recommending ?
+Perry Yap You making Film or Design work?
Film/photo work! But no printing involved
Obligado
De nada!
Why are these videos unlisted? How can we be notified when the new episodes are published?
This video is exclusive for BenQ at the moment. They will be online in the channel a bit later. Episode 2 will Not be Unlisted.
Hugo give us an opinion on Natron
Sorry never used it. Should I?
I don't know, you tell me
a lot interesting! well done! thanks! =)
Good initiative!
Thanks mate. More to come soon.
are you using black magic pocket camera 4k for you?
I use a Blackmagic Ursa mini Pro
wich is your hardware specs?
motherboard, cpu, gpu, ram, monitor, etc
you use a mac pro 2013?
+Erick Alves Yes I do. I have a Mac Pro 2013 fully spec up. Also have a Mac Pro 2010 fully spec. 2x Mac mini servers and a MacBook Air
thanks for reply, and man how you use all this machines on your workflow?
+Erick Alves I have a network connecting then all. Also using a RAID system for my media files shared across the network. It's a Caldigit dual T3 24tb RAID. Also using Synergy to control all machines with one mouse and keyboard.
Nodes rule layers drool.
Haha, can I quote you on that? That is great.
You have my permission. Go for it! You may also quote me on, "I’m in the mode for a node. So long turnpike minus the off ramp."
Thanks you
what is ur name
For me it's simple, I can't afford Nuke so I make After Effects work.
Well Nuke is very high-end so hopefully if you use Nuke that means you are getting payed enough to buy Nuke!
