Shodoshima is an island located in the Seto Inland Sea and belongs to Shozu District, Kagawa Prefecture. Episode 10 of the Shodoshima series is about the shaso of Oji Shrine, a nationally designated natural monument.

Ouji Shrine is located at the southern tip of the Mito Peninsula on Shodoshima.
A shaso is a forest that surrounds a shrine and the approach to the shrine. This is the so-called guardian forest.
The guardian forest of Ouji Shrine is a conical hill 60 meters above sea level that looks like an island at first glance.
Various types of trees grow here, including Ubamegashi, Ibuki, and Japanese black pine.
The coastline is a cliff, and it was designated as a natural monument in 1928 because of the geologically important strata where basalt runs through the granite.
Columnar joints of andesite directly connected to the mantle can also be seen.
Columnar joints are hexagonal pillar-like cracks formed by lava flowing from a volcano that slowly cools and solidifies.

皇子神社(おうじじんじゃ)は小豆島の三都(みと)半島南端にあります。
社叢(しゃそう)とは、神社の神殿や参道を囲むようにある森林のことです。いわゆる鎮守の森です🌲
皇子神社の社叢は標高６０メートルの円錐形の丘陵で一見島の様に見えます。
ここにはウバメガシを中心にイブキやクロマツなど、さまざまな種類の樹木が茂っていることと、
海岸は断崖となっており、花崗岩を玄武岩が貫く地質学的にも重要な地層を見ることができることなどで、1928年に天然記念物に指定された様です。
マントルに直結している安山岩の柱状節理も見ることができます。柱状節理とは火山から流れ出た溶岩が、ゆっくり冷え固まって、規則正し い六角形の柱のような割れ目です🥷♡
