This interview with Mattis was perhaps the most philosophical, cosmic and deep concerning everything that goes into being a great musician - not just individually, but as part of a 'team' - in this case an integral part of the WDR Big Band. When one is far, far away and just enjoys the music that you hear via WDR, and does not know "the people" behind that music - an interview like this becomes really fascinating, because it is so revealing. I especially liked the part where he describes that feeling of just rehearsing or playing through a piece of music that is NOT being recorded - where philosophically, it exists ONLY for those moments when it is being played - and then? It is gone - but those who were there and experienced it, carry that moment, those moments, with them forever! It prompts discussions about whether or not music was really meant to be recorded at all - where ONE performance exists for all times and becomes what people, listeners, fans remember - they remember that as "the truth"! But, the next time that piece is played, that 'truth' no longer exists. For me, I think that Mattis has a wonderful perspective on this aspect of his life. I also loved the part where he touches upon seeing a work of art (or not), something from another medium, and trying to bring THAT FEELING into his playing or a composition. This is a wonderful way to view things! Bravo Mattis! Bravo WDR and all of the great, great musicians who inhabit that artistic space!!!
I love how Mattis holds up the bottom end of the WDRBB. He is the fundament, if you will. Whether on bass trombone, tuba or that wonderful instrument, the cimbasso - there he is. My ears always seek out his foundation.

Where did you learn English, Mattis? It's excellent. It's colloquial. You use very common expressions so easily, such as "it sucks". That is used constantly by us here in the U.S..
