When Ford dropped the 6.2L V8 in favor of the Twin-Turbo 'Ecoboost' V6 for the second-generation Raptor, we were sad, but we understood. The Ecoboost was more powerful and more efficient than the old V8, both of which are good things. But as much as we hate to admit it, the sound of a V8 in a big, jumping, drifting off-road special adds a lot to the flavor. In order to give the people more of what they wanted, much more in fact, Ford dropped the Raptor R, which doesn't just use a V8, but the Shelby GT500's supercharged 5.2L V8, tuned to 700 HP! It's insanely fast, still very comfortable, and more capable than ever in the dirt, as Matt and Zack find out in this review.
Ford provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review. The fuel didn't last long.

The 700 HP Ford Raptor R Gives the People What They Want, but at a BIG Price - TheSmokingTire

I have seen these sell for 160k at dealerships in Texas. Cool truck but ADM is out of control.
"sell" being the keyword. I blame all the idiots ruining it for the rest of us
True but if people didn’t pay it, it wouldn’t happen..
Heck, the America’s Most Wanted, Hellcat Redeye swapped Gladiator is $170k C in 🇨🇦. mega play toys = mega bucks.
Especially when the trx is available, abundant, and in many ways still beats this truck.
Jeeezus, that’s almost a quarter of a million here in Australia. We’re so screwed it’s kinda hilarious 😅
I've got 11,000 miles on my R and it's been awesome. And all Raptors tow just fine.. I tow 8000 pounds of enclosed trailer and track car all over the place.. tows like a boss, My Gen 2 was no different.
The best off-roading is in someone else’s truck. Great review!
I ordered a '23 Code Orange R the day order banks opened back in July 2022 for MSRP. It showed up 10 days shy of a year. The prices have crashed big time now. On BAT they are selling for under 130k. Awesome truck though!
That's still an INSANE amount of money for a Raptor haha or just any truck in general. But hey if you have the money, go for it! They're badass
Had a ride in a client's RaptoR and yes the supercharged V8 is nice and all but he ended up $145k and my 2018 Raptor used was $38k and was pretty much 90% the same truck. Fast as hell and sounds just fine.
Matt, please bring back the sideburns!
Remember, Matt is a far leftist who supports a racist aphartheid country.
I hired off the record to take care of a ticket in may of 2023. The lawyer assigned to my case ignored the ticket and court dates. I ended up getting a point and that point is now going to cost me $800 a year from my insurance. Stop recommending them.
Im just here for cybertruck comments
700HP tuna tower is the most accurate thing ive ever heard. : ]
Thanks Matt for continuing to preach the less is more mantra. Less weight, less size etc... One could indeed have as much, if not more fun in a smaller truck with equivalent suspension and drivetrain. There's no denying it is a f ton of fun but is it really great second-hand porsche (or many other great sports cars) + great second-hand truck fun?
Oh how I've missed these off-road videos. Keep 'em coming!
It's a pretty sweet rig. It's interesting to see how it gets sideways in a different manner to a clutch type or torsen LSD. Like its getting it down but in a unique way. Like you can see it pull the rear around on the brake to keep it sideways.
I like these. It’s a very specific use case though. For 99% of people it’s pointless. But, the same can be said for Porsche GT3/2 RS. If they’re used like they’re designed they’re not douchey, but if you drive it to show off around town, it’s dumb.
You can tell a GT3RS from a base 911. You can’t tell this truck from a Raptor, nor a base F150 for what you’re paying for it to.
You say that because you don't have one. I could say the same thing about your hat.
@@cartergarnon6299 the difference between a raptor r and a base F150 is insane. A GT3 RS Vs a base 911 is equally insane.
@@eugenethomas7080 if I had a use case and the funds I’d buy one. But, I don’t have either. My hat however, I do have a use case for and have the funds. Lol
I bet the amount of people that drive vehicles around to "show off" or whatever is significantly smaller than the amount of people that think other people drive vehicles around to "show off" or whatever
I'm a Montanan. I drive a truck. Trucks are too fucking huge these days. I do not understand the appeal of driving these monstrosities. Take me back to the early 2000s days of full size trucks.
I've had Gen 2, Gen 3 V6 Raptor, and Raptor R. Sold the R for stupid money before the market adjusted. Even @ MSRP, V8 not worth the extra $ and actually prefer my V6 offroad. Feels lighter and not faster, but quicker.
Bit more speed over that washboard, the belly jiggle disappears. Too bad no footage and testing over larger bumps and whoops or jumping because that's where the real fun is. She's a street legal trophy truck.
I went to the Raptor Assault in Utah and realized that the driver will run out of talent before the truck will. From the crawling/climbing capabilities to the downhill descent control to the high speed stability, it's an amazing off-road bag of fun. I've taken mine on Moab and other trails only a Jeep or a RZR can go. Just not the skinny ones!

It's nice to know I'm not the only one that edits that way.
Cybertruck beats Raptor on acceleration, safety, maneuverability, payload, towing, bed size, approach & departure angles, ground clearance, entertainment system, technology, durability, warranty, and price…
Raptor beats Cybertrcuk on literally nothing.
As obnoxious as this thing is, I prefer the look. Oh and it makes a sound that doesn't get old real fast. Those things matter to people who like cars.
Raptor will definitely beat it on resale value. These things will be near MSRP levels in 5-8 years. Look what the Gen 1 versions go for.
You’re not from around here 😅
around… RUclips? I run my own channels
How about mileage and resale after a year.

Zacks response
These and lifted Jeeps are all over So Cal….with 0 dirt on them.
got to get to the mall somehow! haha i sometimes wait in the car at the grocery store will my partner shops and the amount of lone senoir men that drive f150's just to get one bags worth of groceries is insane!
Another great reminder that I can’t have nice things cuz I’m a poor
The comparison test we need is Raptor R and Porsche Dakar off-road.
Interesting how the badges are last R red but the bed sticker is first R red
Frankly, $15K per extra cylinder is a bargain. It's the engine this truck should have had.
Considering the 2nd gen started at $50k and the 3rd gen is now $80k, what the base truck should have is a 5.0 and a $60k base msrp. The Raptor hasn't gotten $30k better and the R is not $60k better than a base 2017. The reason the 5.0 isn't in the Raptor is because you can add Mr Whipple and make a 700hp truck and still be cheaper than a 3.5L.
Can’t wait to hear Matt’s reaction to the latest John Oliver bit, first thing I thought of when I saw it was, Matt loves John Oliver and hates Musk so this is like a belated Hanukkah gift.
Literally just emailed it to him this morning 😂
Leftists and try hard leftists (like Matt) hate the basic concept of free speech. It’s a real shame.
Hey you are just not truck guys! You hit all the high points - big, comfortable, fast, sounds great, can tow 8,900 lbs. and be used as a truck - what's not to like. It is important to keep in mind that these "big" truck have a purpose - Raptor R is a fun truck that can be used everyday in comfort - my F-350 SRW 6.7L diesel Tremor lifted on 37"s is bigger still - its a great tow vehicle - that is very capable offroad - but I would rather use my RZR Pro R for the offroad duty and the F-350 to get there and back and to drag my 5th wheel off the pavement away from the noise of typical camping spots or just get the boat to the lake. For daily duties my Porsche Macan GTS and Porsche GT cars for non dirt or lake weekends. End of the day if you love equipment - you need a truck - as you will be towing stuff, hauling friends and family to enjoy the outings as well - big trucks are here to stay and thank God Ford, GM and Ram are competing for our $$$$ as they are putting out great trucks!
Keep the great content coming. Love the Raptor R - if I had room for another truck, I would have one!
I have a “regular” gen 3. and yeah you do feel like you inconvenience other people in the suburbs. I try to back in to spaces with beds or grass behind me so I don’t take up the length of spots but the width is still nuts.
I like the big bed, I use it for work. But on trail and in parking lots, it sucks. Other than that…it’s the greatest daily ever. And the V6 gets 17mpg combined.
Man, I wish you guys would have had a go in the TRX like this.
Why? Everyone who’s driven both, prefer the Raptor and rightfully so
Mopar fanboyz don't want to see this isht. @@dnice362
I’m here for the Jason Camissa beatdown…
Walked past a new stock Chevy 2500 yesterday. Hood was at least 5 feet off the ground. TopKicks have better visibility. Just stupid.
Love pick-ups. Owned 5, from compact to full size. Drove cab over dump trucks too.
Perfect truck for picking up snow from Mexico 😉
love the cheeky sarcasm in the beginning. you guys are hilarious
The raptors have locking rear difs (real ones) so don’t know what theyre on about with the lsd talk. The torsen lsd in the front is gone on the Rs
Hey Matt since you're so concerned about pedestrian safety how come you didnt discuss that when talking about this truck?
He did.
Now, make a cheaper version with the big Tremor N/A V-8 and keep at no more than $85K. Total winner.
Please drive a Rivian R1T. I’d love to see how it stacks up to the Raptor and TRX!
ruclips.net/video/KsrIGeeYmbs/видео.htmlsi=iHNQ0H8gZNcj8YOl
In regards to the size it really does baffle me as to why people drive these size trucks as daily drivers. It feels like you're driving a cargo ship, which is not enjoyable.
TBF, with the equal length exhaust, the V6 raptor sounds better than ever.
Mehh, did down pipes, and even with Trombone, still sounded like a wet fart lol, even doing Corsa and Borla. Corsa was definitely more tinny/buzzy. I can see how some may like that (so I guess better than ever), but its either A) sound like a monotone vacuum cleaner (stock) or B) monotone wet fart (modded). 3.5 is just terrible sounding in truck form. Imo the 2.7 is even worse. However the 3L Eco like in my last neighbors Explorer ST sounded good with Borla setup for a V6, far better than the 3.5 and 2.7, that sounded more German-esque sport sedan"ish in a way. Now my tuned 3rd gen Coyote with same Borla S ooooooo heavenly lol.
Nice ... if you want to go bowling at the exit of a kindergarten with the little toddlers being the bowling pins 😅
Still can’t figure out why the Bronco Raptor w/o this engine is still just as much smh..you might have answered this question…(to sell more & not solo-compete)💯
I’d guess that Ford has amortized the cost of the F150 a lot more than Bronco, so the Raptor is slightly cheaper to build.
Ridiculous but I need one 😅
This should just be called, "The Ford America."
I'd love to have one of these as a daily. Would be perfect.
This truck is for pirates
What’s that knocking/clicking sound in the dash? Camera? Or is the quality not solid while going on dirt roads)
Mic wires bouncing around.
Better than Cyber Truck?
Is this a serious question?
Rich people destroyed the car market.
Rich people have destroyed literally everything.
The edits of the V6 you put in actually sounded amazing. Almost like a GTR. Could of just been my headphones though.
The new Ecoboost Raptors have a crazy loop exhaust that sound GTR-ish
@@thabrownieviking yes. the 3rd gen, 2021-current all sound like a GTR. Love it!
I actually thought he was cool when he had his orange Gen1. That thing was sweet! Now he owns a Mach-e 😣
this thing isn't much slower than a ford gt for 0-60 and 1/4 mile times really
Slower and more expensive than a Tesla Beast. Total fail.
And still has better towing range or range in general.
lol I love when an ev comment.
@@quocle652 wheat does that even mean?
@@isaigarcia394 wrong, CT has a better range and even further with the range extender. Then why are the sales so poor? There aren't over a million people putting down payments on a waiting list for the Raptor.
@@quocle652 I have an F150 and it gets 12mpg on a good day.
I don’t know, the newest generation Raptor Twin Turbo V6 in Baja mode sounds pretty cool actually. It has like a trumpet twist in the exhaust. Definitely not as cool as the Supercharged V8 of course.
Mache gt with regen on should be closer than 150 feet. It’s kind of crazy how fast it stops I own one.
If you can afford the insane price for this truck you can also afford the insane amount of money you will spend on fuel. On the upside you will know every gas station location and attendant in your local area and major highways too! LOL
At least you can fill up and be on your way faster than with an equally outrageously priced electric truck like a Rivian or Hummer or Tesla.
I own a 22 GT500 CFTP and it was cheaper than this truck with a 10k bump butt fuck from my dealer! They want 50k over for these.. still!!!! No Bueno my friends
Since when did CyberFarah, the guy who brags about selling drugs in high school, has hundreds of videos online speeding and doesn’t waste an opportunity to use a bit of good old cronyism to get away in life, became so bothered with other people buying whatever they want? So much social accountability from someone that has like 7 cars?
So much cognitive dissonance.
CA + liberal wife = boring Matt
@@gdavis03svt also no kids. So ideology takes podium in the priorities.
Kinda always been a tool.
it's awesome but yeah, it really should have been a v8 all along which would make this the regular raptor. now, after screwing us over for an entire generation, we get what we didn't know we wouldn't be able to with the gen 2, at twice the price. also, no supercab. I guess I'm keeping my second gen and my service center on speed dial.
V6s over 3L don’t sound good?
Ford GT?
Nissan GTR?
They’re literally the two best sounding V6s and both are over 3L
Absolutely stupid. I want one.
The hard R raptor lol
Is the Ecoboost Raptor the one with the "housekeeper"?
What happens if you meet someone going the other way at a similar speed?
Matt Farah has zero credibility as an auto journalist! See his chat with Jason Cammisa on Solving the Money Problem called Tesla hater gets destroyed.
My 1993 f150 with a prerunner kit can outperform this for a fraction of the cost
Why is a Mustang or Corvette being used as a benchmark for braking in a Raptor?
My thoughts exactly Corvette with the Z07 package are running 15K Brembo Ceramic brakes throw them on the Raptor R and I am sure it would stop just as good. That was such a stupid comment form them.
Yep, ridiculous! Even on my "D-Plan"! Where's "Cash for Clunkers"?!?!?!?
Been in both… both raptors are more capable than the TRX in baja environments.
Jay Leno released a CYBERTRUCK review today and this guy is reviewing a...Raptor?! LMAO What a difference between the professionals and amateurs...
my cow hide wallet has survived 10 years + and it has a coin pouch
V8 is must
A lot of the shortcomings that were belabored (mostly attributed to size) seemed to be a California problem and not a rest of America problem. Geographically, most of America is very open and size isnt an issue. Overall great review otherwise!
The parking spots are the same size no matter what state you are in.
@@OrangeyJuice79 tell me the federal standard for a parking space size then? Because the ones in NYC parking garage vs the ones in Walmart are very different
I call it the "hard R raptor."
"Big V6s don't sound good." "V6s over 3 liters: No bueno."
The best sounding V6s in production cars:
-Evora/Emira: 3.5L supercharged
-Camaro: 3.6L
-VQ - 3.7L (I know some people hate this one, but some love it)
No, they don't sound as good as a good V8, but they do sound better than one corked with a turbocharger for sure.
Is Matt becoming woke? Worried about pedestrians, inconveniencing other people. Is that what car culture is about now? If you drive a classic Ferrari or Lamborghini is the noise a nuisance? Come on snap out of it. Geez…..
He's a libby, rails about Trump here and there. He's a driving enthusiast who shoots his own foot and doesn't know it. He's like a dirt biker that contributes to the Sierra Club...😆
Didn't the Cybertruck (CyberBeast) smoke the Raptor R, while it was driving in the dirt and the Raptor R on pavement? 🤔
Lol, buddy…..that cyber truck is joke (even tho it’s cleverly engineered). Mark my words, in 10 years…..this raptor will have appreciated and will be a true collectors item, and that iPhone on wheels, just like every other current electric car will be pretty much worthless. But more importantly, I know you know nothing bc Trucks like these aren’t just about out right speed, it’s suspension, chassis balance, geometry etc that allows you to go fast off road. Why they just ran one of these in the Baja 1000, We won’t see that EV doing it any time soon.
What area is this? Would love to hoon on some easy trails like this!
Jawbone canyon. California
Absolutely ridiculous in every way, including fun.
Can we see the road more please? That was like watching a podcast in a car interior.
A bunch of small V8 is the decals

That's a big nope they're gone as fast and they can get them in even with markups.

1ST Gen Raptor has no power...just sound.
Cybertruck
the people in this comment section that are comparing this raptor to a rivian are very, very confused. may god please help them on their journey.
With insane dismal mpg, owners are leasing from the gas stations. I'd get a Rivian sooner.
Agree, or Cybertruck. Gas mileage just seems excessive. This is really the case for an all electric powertrain. Most won’t tow with a Raptor anyway.
did you really just put a rivian and raptor in the same thought? did you take your meds today? people who buy a rivian and a raptor are completly two different people, raptor owners do not think of gas costs because they have money, silly guy.
you have to be a different kind of special to be thinking gas cost is a factor for a raptor owner, take your medications please
While wearing a mask driving alone no doubt...
@@superdukerandyI wear your wife’s underwear. Two layers of it in fact. And then I put your layer of underwear on top of that! You know I was in NYC during the first wave / strain of Covid, which came through primarily JFK airport (after they stopped flights from Asia, people just came the other direction through Europe into JFK). Dead people were being collected and dumped into freezer trucks and trailers. They were wheeling out old ladies, and every once in a while a 30 year old out of apartments. Fast forward to this holiday season. I got Covid in September, because I’m not that old I was really sick for 3 days and in bed for over a day then sounded terrible for a week. I gave it to my 74 year old mother in law. She was sick for two weeks, developed pneumonia, went to the hospital, then got C Diff and 3 months later just got better. So stop pretending like you are a smart ass that have the answers to everything. With that kind of attitude you are not going to get anywhere. I have over $1 million dollars in liquid assets. I can go buy the Raptor R tomorrow. I think it’s overpriced and running costs are too high.
Also, why is Zach held back. He's obviously a 1000 times more talented than you

@@brandonchism6960 Yeah they're switching back to a turbo v6. so incredibly lame
Americans dunk on the V6 Raptor for sounding bad, but they're just spoiled for choice IMO. The new ones sound sick with the new exhaust, plus the turbo whistle coming in. And they're plenty fast too.
The cheapest engine available for the F150 is a V6. The normal Raptor also has a V6. If every other top of the line truck has a V8 then it kind of makes sense that people paying over a hundred grand for a truck dont want a V6. Personally I'd have the 5.0 Coyote.
@@c0c0asauceRaptor V6 is polished though it isn’t just a run of the mill six cylinder and if you actually take this thing off road it is the better truck imo, better range and lighter
@@drhassan6892 It is actually worse than the run of the mill V6. The ecoboost engines have never been particularly reliable because the coolant system is absolute garbage and the cam phaser issue. They added port injection in gen 2 because of issues pertaining to DI. They improved the timing chains and phasers eventually but after 2015 the 3.5 ecoboost F150 has 30-50lbs more over the front wheels than an equally equipped 5.0. Maintenance is far simpler with a naturally aspirated V8.
@@c0c0asauceI agree with getting the Coyote 5.0 V8 and then upgrading the chassis to be close to a Raptor and would still be spending less money than a Raptor R. I also would be able to plop a Ford Performance supercharger on the Coyote.
