  • Getter Robo Arc recently finished airing in September 2021, being my most anticipated anime of the last 5 years, it had alot riding on it for me, especially due to it being announced during the production of my previous massive Getter Robo Retrospective so how did it all turn out in the end? This review details a majority of my feelings on both the strengths and weaknesses of the show. Hope you enjoy!

This video articulates all my thoughts on Arc better than I ever could. So many thought that we’d see beyond the cliffhanger with a whole episode dedicated to it but the pattern of expansion showed we wouldn’t see too far beyond it. It’s good to see Saint Dragon’s full form which we only ever saw it’s face and fully only in sketch form intended to be Shin Dragon’s final form at some point back in Armageddon.
The future we see and the present time we leave off at, so much one has to wonder what happened in between. The world is screwed and Saint Dragon is likely cultivating humanity so Ryoma in Shin Getter’s probably there or will be soon and utterly confused. Getter One has appeared and is likely preparing to join Saint Dragon as it mentions that Ryoma wasn’t meant to be there yet likely referring to Getter One. Humanity has or will one day leave the solar system and centuries later meet the Andromeda Stellaration that kicks off the original Orion Wars. Maybe with knowledge of the future especially by Baku the Arc team can save humanity and avert the crusade that followed by overturning the will of conquest that led Getter to such a point since it seems the Emperor gave them this path and thus won’t stop them.
Originally I thought the ending would have been far different or at least if Ishikawa continued believing a new conflict would come and in the end force a Shin level getter to imbed into Venus and turning the planets into getter ships (used Plant Beasts as the example enemy force born of corrupted Getter Rays caused by Bug’s influence) since Earth and Mars had their own already imbedded. Saint dragon then cultivating humanity on earth in the aftermath until Emperor Eagle arrived leading the ships to save humanity in the Orion Wars but listening to this I can see how that wouldn’t work as a thematic ending at all.
Originally I thought that Go and Getter Tarak were from the present called by Shin Getter Robo G and they’re the original Shin Getter body as enough of Mars had been absorbed that a new body, Getter One, was already ready thus a spare Getter that can be sent through

Perhaps my only real disappointment when it comes to the narrative is the fact that they don't show off what happens to Bug, which is a pretty common opinion, I think. IMO Getter Arc is a very mixed bag. For every aspect it did well, it did at least one thing poorly.
There are changes to the scenes that were perfect the way they were in the manga, and showrunners seemingly misunderstood them. There are scenes that have drama potential but severely lack impact. There are subtle changes to characters that don't work that well. But... there's too much "buts".
Both Takuma and Kamui seem more irritable and quick to anger than in manga, I wouldn't call them "exceptionally accurate to manga". Just compare both versions of that fight in the very beginning. Manga Kamui almost calmed down after initial clash, then Takuma unwittingly pushed his berserk button - whereas here we have just straightforward escalation with insults. But then we have that funny brawl scene between rank-and-file pilots and Arc team - silly as it is, it shows very well how teammates view each other, and more - how normal humans fear Kamui, which is subtle but important facet of his character. In the end Takuma's and Kamui's weird dysfunctional friendship is delivered perfectly. Likewise, Takuma's burning hatred towards killers of his mother is legendary.
Baku is given very solid expansion as a character, and again, his long-lasting friendship with Takuma is gold. The scene where Baku convinces Takuma to stay at labs and become Getter pilot (again, they gave a good explanation why bros wanted to get in labs in the first place). But then there's another flashback to ten years ago, and this sweet idea "Baku has been around since that day" gets ruined by a mediocre scene that shows the start of this friendship. Then again, I feel like Baku could have interacted with Kamui too.
Sho and Schwartz don't serve any actual purpose in the plot. Schwartz is there for a couple of pointless weird scenes. But then we have Go riding Getter Tarak, and holy spaghetti he's both a chunk of fanservice in the best meaning of the word, and delivers arguably the best scene in the whole show when he launches that time machine through self-sacrifice.
Hayato is undoubtedly the star here. Kawagoe and co. grasped this "last of the original Getter Team" aspect of him very well, and his final dance is just worthy of his character. At times Hayato might seem more emo than his stoic manga counterpart, but it only makes him livelier, so it's a reasonable trade-off. But then again, how could they show that Yamazaki blew herself up without showing how Hayato and other people in the HQ reacted to it? Nuclear explosion reflected in Hayato's eyes and his unforgettable line "I will tell them that I'm sorry when I meet them in Hell", spoken to Go, should have been there at any rate!
Musashi is near damn perfect. What else can I say.
Gettersaurus and its pilots aren't exactly well-developed, but they performed much better than in manga. I see it as a compensation for having Getter Kirik fail half of the time it's used. Then again, I really love the implications that they've been Kamui's partners in conspiracy against Gore III all along. And having Kamui plan to overthrow his full-blood brother before he is given blueprints of BUG is a very welcome addition, that in turn implies that it might have been Hayato's plan to have loyal Kamui at head of potentially hostile force, thus ensuring humans and Saurians' coexistence. Getter Arc manga tells so much more than it says, and here we have showrunners doing exactly the same thing. Well done.
Prof. Han was given some good bits of characterization too. There are Saurians wishing for peace between species, and who else could be a better example than gentle giant scientist who mentored first successful human-reptile hybrid?
Carter McDonald is a mixed bag. I see how by showing his deep hatred towards Getter and pain over loss of his master showrunners tried to expand the character... but it doesn't work well for him. No, not for him. He was much more menacing and demonic in the manga, and here we see him cry when he remembers destruction of Hyakki Empire. Alterations to how he met his end are questionable, but the outcome is not bad at all. I still prefer manga version narrative-wise, where he casually accepts death knowing that his cause is not yet lost - Kamui has BUG. Having him actually fight Arc sounds like unnecessary stretching of a story arc, but... it's simply the best fight in this anime, and one of the best fights in the franchise. All the more impressive compared to majority of fights here - I felt they're very underwhelming. Was it really Jun Kawagoe's work? Has he forgot how he handled SKL? I really feel sorry for that manga scene when Getter Khan brutally tears apart a mountain-sized Andromedan warbeast. So brutal in the manga, so shallow in the anime.
As far as characters go, my biggest problem is Kamui's mother. First, did they really have to change her appearance like that? Did she contract anime mom syndrome from mosquitoes in Gore's gardens, or what? Also, I knew Kamui is gonna end up deciding to kill her, and this could be easily the most heartbreaking scene in the whole franchise if done right. Unfortunately, the way showrunners imagined it was controversial as a concept and just poorly directed as actual scene. I understand where they were coming from - Kamui's mother didn't have any characterization other than being enslaved, and hasn't acted of her own will - but this scene is supposed to be about Kamui making decisions, not his mother. In the end, I felt nothing but embarrassment and disappointment over wasted potential.
Speaking of wasted potential, there's an absolutely epic chant after the second chorus in Unmei no Ketto song. I was sure they're saving it for BUG's debut. They didn't use it at all, what a shame. At least MIROKU did, in his pretty solid (for a hobbyist animator) version of the scene.
Also, I can't agree with you on the OST. It's not exactly on par with OVAs and has quite a lot of forgettable tracks, but there's at least one that shines just like the scene it was used in. BEHOLD THE MIGHTY UZAHRA! (watch?v=NDFUBn3rLjk)
Then again, many flashbacks only work so much because most viewers of this show are fans of the franchise and have read the manga. Schwarz and Sho's final fight together lacks impact because we haven't seen their relationship's start and development. Shin Getter's rush to save the day lacks impact because in manga it was a conclusion to the story, an OP mech was a reward for heroes who got so far without it while being at disadvantage facing much stronger enemy. Even if it couldn't be properly elaborated on here in flashbacks, I feel they didn't do these scenes justice.
As of ending and it's theme of "future is not set in stone"... I always felt that Getter manga was actually doing the opposite, I see it as fatalistic cosmic horror where the heroes and their mecha are THE horror. It immediately sets Getter Robo apart from most mecha franchises. Kamui is definitely the best antagonist in the metaseries, and in many ways due to having a point. I prefer to view his final decision to wipe out humankind not as being misled by McDonald, but as the only logical thing for him to do, given all that we know about him. He was wrong not in what he wanted to achieve, but in thinking he CAN change anything. You can only take on literal god if author's on your side. The way I see manga canon, in this final apocalyptic showdown, having BUG only gave Kamui false hope, and dinosaurs have cheated extinction for too long already...
But then again, there's Ishikawa's Getter (maybe my warped misinterpretation of it), and there's Kawagoe's Getter. He has already ended two Getter Robo stories with gainax-ends that reassure us that destiny is but a word, why should anyone be surprised he pulled exactly the same trick for the third time? That being said, I do like the epilogue. It does carry the intended message well. It does go in line with theme of self-betterment through fighting for a greater cause, and theme of camaraderie too. Character interaction is just so good in there. And, of course, Ima Ga Sono Toki Da.
The lack of conclusion to BUG fight is disappointing, can't deny that. This epilogue feels like a wink: "the actual final fight is too epic for our budgets, have this conclusion instead, hope you like it".
Overall I can't say Getter Arc was consistently passionate. At times inspiration flows like Getter rays, at times scenes look and feel like people doing them just wanted to go home. I can't recommend TV arc to non-fans. I can understand why some people spit at the mention of it. But I enjoyed the show. Maybe less than you did, but still.
Thank Kawagoe and co. for doing what they could. And thank you for a review.
P.S. What is this thing that shows up at 13:31?

generally agree with most points except the part about the ending. I generally feel like it would be something in between "the future is uncertain" and "you can't change this" because the the whole Getterpocalypse is something you kind of have to accept and embrace rather than run away and avoid, but at the same time, I can't say that it wouldn't end this way because...we really don't know what Ishikawa was smoking for the conclusion or what he even planned.
My personal issue isn't the ending itself as it was its execution. I like the comic panels at the end, but they really could've replaced it with pictures of what happened between The BUG fight and Takuma looking for Kamui. You could say or argue that it's _obvious_ what happened, but I would still like to see it depicted. Honestly wouldn't mind an better animated conclusion that expands on ARC, but alas, that probably might not happen.

  • @biropgrules

i disagree on one point. That the Arc manga wasnt meant to be a finale in the story sense of the word, because frankly, if you go back and read the manga, it was all building towards this final battle on mars that the anime teased us with. The getter went through enormous efforts to get the energy(from the dragon) and the pilot(Ryuma), and the only thing it needs now to create its final form as the getter Emperor, is the mass.... Which it set up when at the end of Go, it helped terraforming the planet in preparation of this final moment.
Thematically, the Go manga also heavily implied that when humanity reached Mars, it would find something "amazing", which certainly was a tease and mystery for the characters, but now that we know the final battle would take place there, a reader can easily read it as meta commentary, in that the "amazing thing" that would be found there, was the final battle of the franchise, that the entire franchise was builting towards.
We have seen the incredible lenghts the Getter would go through to see its vision of the getter emperor come to pass(with its destruction of the original dinosaur empire, the fact it probably wiped out the civilization of atlantis when they went down a technological path that would not require getter rays, the way it time and again would absorb Ryuma across the many incarnations of the franchise), we've seen what happens when it fails during the brief trip to the past in Shin, which in hindsight was also a preview of what was to come for earth while also being a red herring, in that unlike that doomed world where there was no pilot to harness the dragons enormous power, and the machine just roamed around destroying everything, Earth was ironically enough destroyed in an attempt to avoid that very scenario.
All of it was to set up this final conflict, where the themes of this franchise would come together one last time, and humanity and dinosaurs would have to come together to prevent this hell future from coming to pass. Not to mention that Kamui is really, really in need of a real redemption arc, and i dont think ken wanted to end that off on just a thematic cliffhanger. rather there was probably going to be a final arc of the franchise where Kamui had to deal with... well everything. Also, the meaning of the name. ARC, is pretty self explanatory when you realise that the story was building towards an escape of all sentient creatures on earth to mars, and then a final climactic battle to decide wheter they would get to make the planet their new home, or wheter it would just be the base of the Getter Emperor to build itself off of. In other words, there was probably going to be a storyline dealing with all of this, rather than just skimming over it.
also, im kinda baffled by the fact that amongst your complaints, you didnt mention that the creators completely missed the point of Getters take on revenge. The entire point Takuma's storyline was a mirror to his father's original introduction, with both of them wanting revenge on someone who had wronged their parents in the past. The difference is that Ryuma started the series off as a monster who got his revenge immediatly, whereas Takuma was overall a standard idiot goodhearted shonen hero who nonetheless would withouth fail embrace the absolute worst aspects of his humanity when he faced his mother's killers.
Both of them would get their revenge, and both of them would feel incredibly hollow afterwards as both revenge stories ended in complete and utter anticlimaxes. which was the point, as one of the themes of Getter is that it is only when humanity gets together that we truly excell as a race, and revenge is completely antithetical to that with he who seeks it sacrificing that bond with our comrades for petty and selfish motivation.
It is not a coincidence that in the chapter where takuma gets his revenge, he is mirrored with the oni empire and their selfish desire for revenge for their emperor and how far theyre willing to go for that, and the image of Kamui wanting deciding to take up his fathers legacy and destroy humanity. And he gets his revenge.... and it is so anticlimactic that he literarly says "thats it? is this really the end of my revenge?" which was the point. Revenge is a suckers game, and the manga is pretty consistent on that point, purposefully denying the original getter team revenge on emperor gore.
This lesson Takuma learns, that Revenge just for revenge's sake is pointless is also obviously something that would be very, very important in his decision to forgive Kamui and bury the hatched so long as the hybrid helped them by piloting the arc once more. Unfortunatly, the one, and only point where the anime stumbles as a story is in how Takuma gets his revenge. because instead of an intentional unsatisfying anticlimax, its instead an awesome, amazing final battle where he gets to surpass his father, which completely misses Ken's entire point with Takumas character arc, with him proclaiming "Is this the end of my revenge" coming off as completely laughable after that big climactic finish.
I will admitt that the voice acting kinda salvaged that, as the sheer HATRED he manages to portray in Takuma's voice towards the people who killed his parents was absolutely MARVELOUS. But it still was the one blemish on what was othervise a very good adaption of Ken Ishikawa's original story and characters(if not production values as you noted yourself in this video).

The Arc anime was wonderful. Like you said, it's very rough at spots but otherwise it captures the feeling of the Manga very well and characterization is excellent. My only gripe is Shin Getter Dragon's battle against Bug never coming to light but I understand that they probably did it on purpose out of respect to Ishikawa. I really hope that we get an audio drama or SRW attempts something with that fight but who knows, I'm just glad we got this anime in any capacity and the post credit scene was really, really good. I think we can also add the Pandemic causing some of the problems with the production side; but that aside I do believe your thoughts on the production clearly not having all the support it should have, probably resulted in the 'ugliness' you mentioned. I find myself not just loving this video like I did your Getter/Ishikawa retrospective, but I agree with your points. I personally had hoped the show would have been longer, just a tad, but I also understand why they opted to not over-step in what they added/changed in Arc, least they step on the grave of the late Ken Ishikawa's swan song for Getter Robo.
I admit I DO wish after seeing Sho fly in her Getter Go machine, we'd see Getter Go itself have one last hurrah since all the machines weren't destroyed in the conflict with Rando and the Dinosaur Empire from the Go Manga. Have Sho Hayato, and either Ignari or Swartz fly out to do battle while Takuma, and Co. were in the future or some situation. I grant that's major fanboy fanfic fuel but the tease was there, so it's hard not to want. Back on track, I also agree the 'thematic ending' works better for Getter Robo, as said you it's mainly how Ishikawa ended most of the Getter series. If there ever was going to be a narrative ending, it would probably be whenever Ken felt 'Getter Robo is done and can now sleep', and put his baby to rest for good as far as he was concerned. Some may feel it was a cop-out but, honestly it does fit as even the bleakest or bitter sweet of Getter endings, there is always a ray of hope.
This is probably as good as we'll get, with Ken Ishikawa long past, and no extensive 'story notes' left behind; doing more Getter Robo that isn't a clear alt-verse or spin-off, would feel wrong without Ken's guidance in some capacity. Go Nagai clearly did not want his friends' legacy to be tarnished and thus has been careful with handing out post-Ken Getter projects; so it's amazing Arc actually got an anime adaption. I'd love to know what inspired them to finally animate this series?
Maybe if we're lucky we may see a proper 'adaption' of the entire Getter series like with Arc. A 'Ken Ishikawa' version of the anime adapting the manga of Getter Robo, Getter G, Go, and Shin, so old and new fans can enjoy Ken Ishikawa's masterpiece fully adapted in anime form (with naturally some additions to tweak for pacing as they did in Arc). A long pipe dream for sure, but it would be nice. Seeing scenes from Go, and the Shin manga animated was a blast. Episode seven alone makes me fanboy seeing the ending of Go animated so damn beautifully, along with the OST version of Storm and Heats playing, as some of my favorite manga illustrations from Getter Go were animated so damn well.
Looking forward to your next video series, continue to believe in Getter my friend!

I get what you're saying but I'm not entirely convinced when it comes to your thoughts about the show's ending. I'm not asking for the show to spoonfeed me literally everything and I can accept a few gaps in the narrative and fill them myself with my imagination, but not the yawning chasm that is the timeskip between the original manga ending and the post credits scene - just raises far too many questions that the show doesn't make the slightest effort to try to explain. It also felt like they were just substituting one frustrating cliffhanger for another, almost as if teasing a sequel series that you just know will never materialise, like Shin Mazinger Z all over again. Considering the show's abysmal production values, the anticipation of some kind of resolution to the story was pretty much the only thing that kept me watching and when we got what we did, it was just this massively disappointing burst bubble moment - made it feel like the watch was a waste of time. I could excuse the ass visuals and sound OR I could excuse the unsatisfying ending, but not both at the same time. When Ima Ga Sono Toki Da started playing during the end scene of the last episode all it made me think about was how vastly superior Armageddon was, not only in the sense of production values but also a satisfying ending to the story. I'd rather not have any more Getter adaptations if this is the level of quality we can expect from them going forward.

A heartfelt look into the end of an era. Getter fights for the future the people believe in. Time travel in this series only proves that nothing is set in stone. It hilariously enough loops back around the message in Gurren Lagen about the past the future being influenced by the present. Power is not evil but infinity in any direction is dangerous. Also ending on a prehistoric pussy joke is inspired. Nothing is more old school giant robot then inexplicable sexy motifs. At least we avoided killer robotic wifu. I unfortunately feel far more negative about this show but I'm glad that at least some people found the newest anime adaptation of a series I'm very fond of worthwhile.
Personally, I could not get past the presentation of the show. Not as in "this looks ugly boo" but more on the side of it probably wasn't worth animating this if the audio and visual aspect of it isn't utilized or actively make story moments worse, why am I even watching this. Moments lose impact when they're delivered poorly and this show unfortunately delivered horribly poorly for me in that regard. Some scenes I even found embarrassing as a result of this. I'm not just talking about the animation I found some of the sound effects in the show to be horribly frustrating, specifically the really distinct one they keep reusing and just how limp the stuff in the future came off both in the visuals and audio. I do however agree with the story aspects for the most part and I really wish I could look past the presentation because all things considered I fully understand that there was no way in hell this show would get a proper backing in this department.

The anime can be summarized as complete edition of getter arc manga. It add a few bits of information to expand the original manga. And yes the ending is not exactly what you could call satisfying for the grand finale of the OG combining mecha genre, but at least there is some conclusion instead of just ending it like the manga did. It really is a shame that Ishikawa didn't leave some rought draft or notes for future planning. But as i said there is some form of closure even if it's not perfect.

It is probably the weakest incarnation (technical level of animation/sound design) of the famous Getter Saga, thanks to the fact that the manga itself (Getter Arc) is incomplete. Despite this assumption, the plot is an immense tribute to the story written by Ishikawa, those who know the manga find many references to Shin Getter Robot, Getter Robot Go and Shin Getter Robot: The Last Day. The animated part enjoys a fluctuating animation between CGI and hand drawings, but overall it is enjoyable. The characters are fantastic as well as the story, for me it remains a nice tribute to the mangaka and his immense work.

So my favorite part and change to the series what's the big old Return of the Atlantean dragon I know revenge is never a good thing but the energy and the fight in the music was God tier. I really got obsessed the bug manga and where was confirmed Bud to recreate the universe I thought I knew how it was going to end. It would tie in bug manga ending as they ask what God was like and the answer being a Lost Child looking for his way would make sense to our Dino Boy also his name like translates to God now I think that Shin dragon consumed bug then join with Shin getter and that's why the larvae Emperor showed up. Getter rays aren't the problem it's the people connected to it who still have physical bodies like they have base instincts such as hunger and want for war that cause the problems. The fight never ends so even if there is no God or Buddha believe in getter

Months late, but at the end of the day, I can't help but feel the ending is the turning point. We can guess exactly how things will go. Saint Dragon. Getter Ten ("Wan"). I always felt like once I saw that there was something missing: A third. I feel that, if one takes what we see to heart, the series would end with whether or not the Arc Team can prevent Getter Emperor from forming into its classic self... by controlling Getter Arc's evolution into the Third Emperor Get Machine Prevolution. Yes, Emperor Get Machine Prevolution. Getter Ten is clearly an evolved Shin Getter Robo (it appears on Mars). Saint Dragon is an evolved Shin/Getter Dragon, obviously. So the third must be the highest potential of the third of the Getter mech series - the third must be whatever Arc will become. And once Arc evolves, I would expect the three to combine into a sort of "Proto-Emperor", and things would spiral from there.
The question would be though - would they need to prevent Emperor's formation period? Change the 'mind' of the Getter Rays through some method? I am not entirely sure where things would end up, how they'd change that future. But I feel at the least that the Arc team is the Finale of what Ishikawa intended, and it all comes down to a dire moment where Arc would evolve and how things resolve from that event.

Thus its full of a *lot* of flashbacks and narrative weak-points that would never hit home without people knowing what happened. As someone who re-read the whole getter robo manga between your review coming out and Arc airing I knew what happened in go. Your average viewer would not, and, TBH after this? Damn, it's a freaking awesome job they've done there! They've basically managed to adapt not just the Arc manga but a huge story behind it without messing it up! I can forgive all the ugly visuals for that!!!
And Hayato... I guess it was clear from the final credits with the original manga panels that he's more than just a supporting character but a heart of the story (and the last episode and its credits are a valid proof of that statement!)
Even though I might not totally like Hayato's design for being somewhat unnecessary cheesy (hey, he used to look menacing even in the very first manga!) I totally loved his character development and that the authors decided to show his inner monologue and emotional struggle (which has always been there in the manga as well but hasn't been presented this directly)
And the ending... Isn't it awesome that they've managed to turn an unfinished story into a perfectly complete one without changing the manga's original cliffhanger?
Despite all its imperfections, Getter Arc anime has won a special place in my heart. It managed to reasonably slow down the original manga's unnecessary quick pace and filled the gaps in its story. Apart from that, it paid a tribute to the the whole Getter Saga and its characters, which is totally awesome!!!!

It's cool to see and hear a genuine review 👌 but the things that you complain about are funny 😁 because if you don't draw ✏️ or actually create anything how can you judge yourself!

One other point to add, the fact that each Getter form got additional attacks. Arc Shine Bomber and the Green Tornado for Arc, Kirik's Double Drill Hurricane, Khans Maelstrom, Missile Volley and Homing Beams. I mean after all, it's not a Getter 3 mech without missiles Am I right.

they have a lot of violent language in the dub, not descriptive violent, just the kind of language you imagine from a violent person and it fits incredibly well

One thing that was SUPER distracting to me watching this show: It uses the same SFX library as the Yu-Gi-Oh animes do.
