David Beckham’s last-second free kick against Greece deserves a deep rewind
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 ноя 2024
- It’s October 6th, 2001. We’re at Old Trafford in Manchester, England. Greece leads the Three Lions two-to-one in the 93rd minute, and has the opportunity to keep England from qualifying for the 2002 World Cup.
With David Beckham lining up for a free kick, the English National Team is looking for a miracle in the closing seconds. Make it and Beckham becomes a national hero just four years after effigies of the captain burned in the streets of England following the 1998 World Cup. Miss it and the British get to add a new chapter to their history of national team disappointment.
But how’d we get here? How’d England put themselves in position for possibly yet another heartbreak on a national level? How has a Greek team with nothing to play for nearly pulled this off? Before we get to a moment that will define English football - either through success or failure - we need to rewind.

Thanks for checking out this episode, and I apologize for the use of the term "British" in describing the English National Team. You see, I am just some simple, uncultured American. I definitely didn't live in Woking from 1995-1998 and I for sure didn't go to grade school in Egham or hang out at the Guilford Spectrum near my dad's office. I don't even know what those things are! Anyway, this is to say, my bad. I know better. I will be skipping tea today as punishment.

The closest emotional moment we have in football is probably Landon Donovan's stoppage time winner against Albania to send us to the round of 16 in 2010 or John Brooks stoppage time header to help us get revenge on Ghana in 2014. Not as good as Becks for sure but thats all we got lol

craziest part about this video was how two years later this greece squad was one of the best in Europe winning the euros
They won by taking advantage of the silly golden goal rule. They didn't have to attack until after 90 minutes. That was a defensive masterstroke along with a silly rule that won them the tournament. They weren't anything close to the best in Europe.

It's not just the Miracle of Istanbul itself, it's all the stuff that happened and/or would happened. I mean:
-Steven Gerrard, local hero, was about to sign with Chelsea _before_ the match. Had Liverpool lost miserably, wouldn't he keep on his move to London?
-As of 2019, Milan is a complete shitshow. Can we argue that losing in such a way was the beginning of the end (that also belongs to Collapse, but you understand the point: altering moment).
Now, what is in fact a moment. Nowhere it's defined as _just mere seconds_ . It can be a free-kick, a dunk, a fumble recovery... and also seven magical minutes.

Deep rewinder Malcolm Butler's interception (SB49), OR Odell Beckham's famous 1 handed catch
I know we realllllly need to do the Butler INT, definitely will be getting to that one.
