Mou said he made things simple for him and the entire team and I think the simplicity of his game caused many to misunderstand him... when I saw Jorginho's game coupled with his back pass 😅 i just realized how amazing Mikel was to Chelsea during his days
After he left it was Kante that took his place. It was a nice transition I must say. CFC has been blessed with good no 4s. From Claude Essien Mikel Kante. I'm sure Caicedo will eventually make his mark.
1:58 that's an elite midfielder. Can feel the space and beat the press with good first touch and strength to retain possession under constant pressure.
Now as i look back, I finally realize his true value. He was underrated and underappreciated because of himself... He made it look so simple in the heart of midfield that we often take him and his role as granted. True midfield mastero and proper DM. Thank you JOHN OBI Mikel for your life long service
I remember not rating him when we had likes of Hazard, Fabregas, Costa, David Luiz. He was completely overshadowed and was doing all the dirty work that I only now see the importance of
The thing is, Mikel was a creative player at youth level. He still had that when he played for Chelsea but simply parked it up and played this simple and unattractive but very important part for the club to succeed. United and Ferguson fought for him because of his creative abilities. But he simply transformed to a defensive player that was disciplined and didn't stray to join attack often just to maintain the balance and shape of the team. He sacrificed his creative abilities allowing others to shine. That was why he was underated by many who didn't understand his value. But the Coaches understood his importance and always selected him when fit.
Come to think of it.. he wasn't playing his natural position..he was actually a central midfielder.. watch him play against Spain Vs Nigeria..it was a bad day for xavi and inesta
Mikel is the kind of player Chelsea lack at the moment. It's clear now how valuable Mikel was. A perfect DM. Criminally underrated. We appreciate your efforts and selfless service for Chelsea. A true legend.
Very underrated. Just because he didn't score goals doesn't mean he wasn't a good player. He was strong, solid defensively, good at shielding and keeping the ball and an accurate passer. You would also rarely see him complain if he didn't start every game. A proper team player that most clubs would love to have.
When he is with the ball he hardly looses control and when he intercepts, he releases the ball quickly. His ability to read the flow of the game is top notch. His positioning on the pitch is so lit. A typical DM characteristic. What a player👏🏾👏🏾
If he was in today’s market, you bet every club wanted him so badly. One of the best defensive holding midfielder of that generation, criminally underrated.

John Mikel obi brought the balance to the Chelsea, many never knew the importance of bring a balance to the team .but he understood it and perfected it to the fullest.long leave legend ❤❤❤❤
He played in all major finals , played under all the managers for more than a decade in a very wealthy club that can buy expensive players anywhere in the world. He was very pivotal to the success we had and must be respected for his role .
Today ... his value will over 100 million quid. I mean.... Mikel was a beast. My best part was when he locks up the midfield after going one up. Look... go back n watch Mikel. He comes in and all the nonsense thru balls stops. Miss him dearly
For all the slack some of us gave to him, he was criminally underrated. Calm and composed in situations which demanded the most and helped recycle and maintain possession and pretty decent passing range. I guess I have only understood this since I've learnt more about tactics and philosophy of football. Take a bow John Obi Mikel, a Chelsea legend 💙
I think he should be refereed to as 'The circuit breaker'. He provided cover for the team in the mid-field and his physical presence was a great asset to his team. He played with the Chelsea legends , John, Drogba, Ivanovic etc What a player!
And Chelsea never appreciated him. What a player. I never loved watching football untill I watched Mikel at 2005 under 20s. I became a Chelsea fan because of him.
Mikel was an incredible player in his Chelsea days. Kanteh is the short & quicker/faster version of Mikel Obi. He was basically intercepting almost every ball in his territory and that gave license to our attacking players to focus more on the attacking phase of the game than defending. Most people expected him to be regularly amongst goal scorers like the Lamps, Bisons or Ballacks which was unfair to him. That's why he's criminally underrated.
I truly regret all the criticisms I had made about him through my childhood. As an adult now I see maturity in his football. Respects from a fellow African
A player that was disrespected by fans and sometimes felt easy to compare to Makalele or Essien but what people forget is that Mikel was no a natural DM, he was asked to play that role and took on the challenge selflessly. Mikel was a very talented number 10 who was never allowed to play the role for Chelsea!
Thank you very much. I still grudge Jose Mourinho, for converting Mikel's play to a DM. That was a good reason for him, to sign out and join another club, I guess he was desperate to keep the job because he chose Chelsea over Man UTD, he didn't want to wind up not having a top club to play for. His natural skill, was sacrificed by Mourinho's ego tripping attitude. He won one over MAN UNITED'S gaffer, was all he meant for Jose.

We have talented Midfield but no balance, Caicedo and Enzo dont know who they are in this current set up.
