Lake Superior Agate Hunting in a Gravel Pit | Proper Gravel Pit Etiquette and Rules

- Опубликовано: 26 сен 2024
- While hunting for Lake Superior agate s, lets go learn some lessons in a gravel pit today! Had a blast rockhounding in this pit but we find out that going by word of mouth for certain locations isn't always the right way to go about it. For those of you who do not know, I have only been rockhounding for a year and am still learning many lessons on this journey, this is one of those moments where we learn a big lesson. I am thankful things went the way they did, it could have turned our much worse! I am thankful for the cooperation from the company who owned that gravel pit, there was never an issue while I was communicating with them. Don't forget to do your research before going out to spots, especially if someone gives you a lead and does not own that property.. better to be safe than sorry!
We found some absolutely beautiful Lake Superior agates on this hunt, as well as jasper, porphyry, and a few other goodies. I have enjoyed my time rockhounding in the few gravel pits I have been to, but I think it's time to put in some more work and research and find some more unknown locations to find our treasures!
THANKS FOR WATCHING EVERYONE :)

Mate thank you for sharing that link as well. It’s been amazing the support from this community of good people. Thank you man. 🙏👊
Of course, it was a no brainer, ill be continuing to share the link for a while, hoping to help get a few bucks for them here and there! 🙏
Nice finds 👍. Kudos to you for being a nice and honest guy. This world needs more people like you Taylor ❤️
Youre too nice!
Great story. And a situation well handled. I ran into a similar situation in Southern Mississippi this past weekend - thought we had permission to go to a gravel pit, but the pit managers would only allow collecting if a mutual friend would accompany us. Since my friend who knew the manager was not able to be present, we had to pass for this trip, even though we drove 8 hours to hunt there. But it is a business, and we definitely want to respect their needs. As it happened, we hit some gravel bars in the rivers instead and found a TON of gorgeous agates and fossils, so the trip was still worth it. Like you said - there are plenty of places to hunt without burning bridges for all rock hounds. Rock hounds are a great community of people - thanks for representing us so well up in Minnesota!
Sounds like what happened was meant to be for you in the end!!
Lesson learned. Dont take people's word w/o investigating yourself first. Got it.
👍👍
@@AgateDad I just learned that in Mississippi, the pits are public land.
Get in em buddy!!
As I'm watching this I see it was from 3 years ago. But I still wanted to brag on you and tell you how proud I am of you for being such an honest and moral young man that you would call those people and even grieve over your infraction.. though it was totally innocent, as it were. I'm proud of you. I know God is proud of you and I just had to tell you that. I'm sure I'm old enough to be your grandmother, but you deserve to get some kudos. I've been watching your videos and I enjoy watching you- you are a joy because you derived such joy in what you do. I'm also so blessed because you often say how blessed you are... which I don't hear enoughanymore..... so again, I'm proud of you even for that. There's only ONE TRUE BLESSER and that is GOD. So bless youTaylor! 🤗🥰😇😊
Thanks for owning up to what you did. Others are right, the world needs more people like you. Thank you for turning it into an educational tool for us because like you we don’t know until we know and now we know 😂
Oh thank you 😊 I am happy I had the opportunity to turn it into a teaching moment...i believe thats why it all happened the way it did.
Awesome finds bro, my favorites are those two you found at 4:30 & 5:30. As well I know it’s hard to own up in situations like that, I’ve been in similar situations by accident we’re I was slapped with citations back in the Texas Hill Country. That’s never fun, I’m glad you did the right thing. Honesty is alway better. Thanks for the video and you have my respect that much more bro. 👍🤙🤙 Hope you have an awesome weekend.
Thats a big worry, citations, I wouldn't want any lol and even more importantly, i don't want anyone else to get any!!
Agate Dad yeah I know, thankful the judge dropped the 2nd charge since she thought it was ridiculous and I paid to be there but accidentally just step onto someone else land. But that’s a big worry of mine so now I’m extremely careful where I go.
Thats nice of the judge and good to be careful!
I really liked those agates you found, beautiful. But what I loved more is your courage to publicly own up. Thank you and keep sharing.
Thanks! It was the right thing to do, as uncomfortable as it was to do.
Very nice agates!! As someone who works in the mining industry I can tell you that there is HUGE liability on companies if an accident occurs especially in active locations. I know it's tempting for rockhounders because those LSA's are bigger in the gravel pits. I commend you for doing the right thing and letting the company know. In doing so you likely made them diligent in fixing their security and may prevent others from potentially getting hurt.........or prosecuted!
Thats the hope, it is a local company too so I always want to support local.
You found some beauties! It was so honest of you to call the company owners. We are lucky here in Scotland as there is a law that allows you the right to roam wherever you want (with some conditions.) We still feel better if we ask permission - have just got a permission to hunt for Amethyst, Yay! xx
It just made sense to do that, I don't want the companies or anyone thinking negative things about rockhounds. What?!?! Lucky! I wish i could find a vein somewhere...i know jts up here...just have to find it!
You go Daddy, !! I injoy watching your videos, I also go rock hunting, I look at them as Rock Treasure from our father above, after all, he is full of surprises. Stay safe and God bless you my friend...
😊🙏 they sure are, God bless you too ❤
I like the format of showing each selected rock cleaned up right after pick up.
Thanks! That was a new thing I tried this video, ill have to keep that going for future vids with dirty rocks 🤘
I know how your passion for rocks can steer you in unknown territory, been there, you could not of steered yourself back on track any better, you did everything right, ROCK ON :)
Appreciate that my friend 🤘
Hi, I just finished your video . I am glad you did the right thing and contacted the gravel pit . Getting permission is the right way. The agates are amazing all those gorgeous bands. I just like to see people who respect others property's. You son is a cute little guy. Thank you all time and energy you put 8n to make your videos. It let's me see the beauty in simple things. Take care and stay safe. Congrats on your new baby when he arrives in your life's.
Thanks for watching and the kind words!
Jeez ive got hundreds of those laying around!!!!! I never new they were agates!!!! Cheers Taylor 🍻
You should make a video showing them all!!
Oh man, we live and learn brother. And owning what we do is big dude. Hat off to you man. That being said... holy bands! Holy moly tonnes of bands!!!!! You’re a good man Taylor. It’s an easy mistake, but one I know you’re not gonna forget. Trust me. I don’t forget mine.
You're a good man too Jesse, I am just happy we have the ability to help others learn from our mistakes. But yeahhh...those bands 🤤 haha!
Hi Taylor, yep we all make mistakes, taking people at their word can quite often lead to unexpected results regardless of how well meaning those people might be. Some great pieces in that gravel pit, makes you wonder what has been lost of the years, luckily there is plenty still out there. Keep Safe & Keep Rockin
Yeah lots of treasures being dispersed to landscaping rock and roofs lol
Beautiful finds ! What a sweet and lovely young man you are God bless you and your family 💖
Thank you Easter!! God bless you too 🙏 ❤
Its crazy how the little ones can fit such nice bands in them great finds as always🍻
It really is, most of my "big" ones are pretty ugly lol thats why I don't care about size
Those rocks are just stunningly beautiful. I'm so sorry that you ended up finding out about the pit like that, but how amazing was your conversation about it all and education for how to go about doing it.
Happy to help share the knowledge 😊
Thank you for your honesty and using your mistake to teach others. I appreciate your values and love your videos! I live in Colorado, but am learning so much about rocks! I am a Rock Houndess (my friend came up with that), I tumble them and eventually want to cut some too! You are awesome!
Beautiful rocks, my dear. Your such a straight up guy. Your parents must be awesome to bring up such a son.☺️
Youre seriously too nice!
You and katydid are my favorite hounds. This video told me everything I needed to know about you. Thank you for the great advice and being just a genuine GOOD person! Happy hunting!
I appreciate that, im happy to share these lessons and hopefully help someone think before the assume its all good.
Good job admitting and owning up to a mistake it happens and your setting an amazing example great job
Appreciate that 😊
I love the way you edit your videos. It's so fun to see the rocks cleaned right away. Thankyou! !
Appreciate that!
Amazingly beautiful agates! Wow! Thanks for the views.
I used to swim and windsurf ( my. Learning place with my windsurfer ) waaaaaaay back when I was a teen. We never got permission, ooops. It wasn’t a working pit, but still. We also never got raided by the cops.
That being said, times have changed, people learn the liabilities can cripple you. Great video, and you’re a good guy for doing what you did!
Cheers
I appreciate it, the guy who called me out on it still doesn't believe I actually talked to the pit owners and apologizd. haters gonna hate lol I have never had an issue with doing things the right way but sometimes mistakes still get made, own it, and grow from it 😁
Well said Taylor. Beautiful rocks.
Thanks
I appreciate your honesty. Great finds! Now.... cut em!!!!
For sure :)
Beautiful rocks and good info. Thank you!
You're welcome 😊
Also, I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but a great gift idea for the whole extended family come Christmas season, make personalized calendars, with pictures you take, and you can even put everyone's birthday in them... I've been doing them for a couple years now, everyone loves em! And you take pictures 10000x better than I do! I go through VistaPrint. Never been disappointed!
Hmmm ill have to look into that! Most of my family thinks I am nuts so maybe a giveaway or something
@@AgateDad Yeah, just something to think about. You take such awesome pictures! Gotta do something with em!
I appreciate your honesty and how you handled the situation. Beautiful agates!
Thanks Laura 😊
Taylor, thanks for the information on asking permission....very important to know!!!! Take care.
Of course :)
Awesome Agates!!
They are beauties 😍
Thank you Taylor for the tip. I also believe trespassing is wrong. Hope to see you on a beach some day. Those are some of the most amazing agates I've seen in awhile. Nice finds. Thanks for your honesty.
✌&❤
I hope so too :) thanks!
Thank you for that information, honest is important. Happy hunting. 😊
Good information Taylor, I enjoy Your videos.
Thanks Larry!!
The good that came from this is now you know and you let others know so they don't make the same mistake. Good on yah :) ps Wow lovely agates :)
Thank you, I was so happy to help spread the word.. we have to do the right thing and protect this hobby.
I like gravel pits on wet days.
Great video, Taylor!
Thanks Dana!
how beautiful!! what amazing finds! dont worry about the mistake. we're all human :)
So true!
That was just an extra impressive haul! Meeting the problem straight forward to the top always seems to work out better, unless you get someone that got up on the wrong side that morning. Sure glad everything worked out for . Enjoyed and learned a lot from this video. Thank you so much for sharing with everyone. God bless
I'm happy to help share this knowledge, and being able to talk to a reasonable person, at the company, helped too. God bless you and yours 🙏
Hey I could be wrong, but at 4:18 when you say"Best finds of the day"; it looks like another one right next to it on the left. It looks red. I definitely agree. Gorgeous banding.Even the funnel is perfect in it.
I don't think that would have been one. Ive been suprised before though!
You are so awesome! Thank you!
you found some real pretty agates I remember your old vids of you picking up tiny pieces and thinking they were massiveXD you have been took so far since then great job and nice effort.
I still get pumped with the tiny pieces lol im just happy to be finding these minerals, the bigger ones are a bit more exciting though, unless they're unbanded lol
@@AgateDad what if you found a agate in a gravel pit that was so big it was to hard to move and it had the most beautiful bands. would hire a crane to get itXD even though that would never happen.
That and 💩 lol
What an amazing man! I appreciate this video for so many reasons. Thank you. Absolutely amazing finds!
That is so kind! Thank you!!
Beautiful rocks! Bummer about this location but glad you shared what you learned with us.
Happy to do so :)
Great finds man!
Thanks bud 👍
I enjoy your videos, and appreciate your integrity:)
Thank you 😊
These are beautiful. Glad to understand the rules before I go into a place like that. Thanks for 5his video!
You never cease to amaze me.
Outstanding finds! Excellent video...Again.
And, a lesson learned that we all need to pay attention to. Getting permission from land/pit owners is Vital to maintaining a positive image of the hobby.
Here in the Tri-State area(IA,IL,WI) almost all of the pits are owned by the same company. That company had an incident about 20 years ago at their Rock Island, IL pit. A rockhound got into trouble and was badly hurt while solo hounding and then tried to sue them. Since then they will only open up 2 pits for Club sponsored and Insured events 2 weekends a year. It took over 5 years for the 3 Clubs in the area to negotiate this agreement. Any other time you will be arrested on sight for trespassing. However, at their consumer yard, they do sell their "decorative" rock by the 5 gal. bucket during the last 2 hours of their day and will allow you up to 1/2 an hour to fill it. But only after they shut down the heavy equipment for the day.
That said...
Your Integrity is to be commended.
You could have swept the whole thing under the rug but you didn't. You stepped up and fessed up with the pit owner, then you turned the mistake into a learning experience for the rest of us. Thank You.
As always... Good Luck, Have Fun, and Keep on Houndin'...
A. Bearsfan4lyf...
Thats pretty crazy and unfortunately why pit companies operate the way they do..i appreciate your commebt Steve!
Thanks for that video and being honest and passing on very important information. You did find some beautiful agates though.
Im happy I had the opportunity to share that info 👍
That was very respectful. Awesome! 😁
Nice idea, AD - I think a lot of people don't know how to approach private lands.
Yeah, especially when you get word that, "its all good" lol
Dude...the agate at 4.43! WHAAAATTTT! Trim and polish pleeeeeese! As far as the hiccup goes, I always get permission first. But lovely finds mate 💓
Yeah isn't that nuts!! Yeahh still learning the ins and outs of some things, my first year of rockhounding has been full of many lessons 👍
@@AgateDad true that, mine too. Im very fortunate that most folk are pretty cool about it though. Have you got a polishing set up ortumbler yet?
I'm working on a polishing set up...its taken a back seat to other things lately though...it'll make sense next week lol so busy!
I am really early!! Awesome agates!!
You are! They sure are!
You're such a good man. Really appreciate you. How us baby coming along? Big hugs to all of you. Thank you
Hes doing good! Kicking a lot and is making even more excited to see his beautiful face!
Amazing, beautiful finds! I found porphory in central MN! Im so excited about it! 😊
The little pink agate had some nice eyes like that one.
It did...can't lie...i didn't notice them until I finished editing the video and did my final "watch" lol 😆
Thank you for educating us. I have thought about going to graval pits but was unsure about the guidelines. You did find some great agates!
Yeah its easy picking, but gotta go about it the right way 👍
@@AgateDad do you know how they get the graval pits? What do they do with them in MN?
Its a local company thats owned it for almost 100 years, they do a wide variety of tasks throughout the state
Thanks for the info!!!😆
You're welcome!
Your a good man!
😊
Lots of apps now to determine property ownership, so very little excuse anymore.
Nice video and thanks for sharing 👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Some people don’t know about that technology, I sure didn’t back then, I have an app now so that is super helpful!
Great informative video. I have read of folks going to ornamental rock places and paying a small fee to collect from the piles...might be an alternative to quarry access.
Definitely going to look into it!
Crazy cool !!! Lakers are the top dog!!
Thanks for the information also....
They are the best, in my opinion lol
If you don't have it, download the "OnX" app. It's basically google earth with property lines and owner information. You can really quickly tell if you're on private, federal or county land. I use it all the time.
Just got it thanks!!
I can smell the petrichor!
Sorry it was a bit of an ordeal, but you came out of it with some very valuable information (plus some sweet agates!), so a successful day in my opinion!
Heheh had to google that one 👍 yeah it was, glad its all good now though!
@@AgateDad I think you did the exact right thing in that situation. Hahaha, and yeah, good old VSauce, I used to watch his videos all the time, that's where I learned petrichor.
It's good to know there are still people of integrity out there who actually want to follow the rules and who will own their mistakes. Thank you for that. Seems to be a dying breed. Makes you pretty special in my book. You made some great finds today. Some of those banded agates -- wowza! Just gorgeous. Also, you taught me something. I'd never heard of porphyry, so I googled and learned all about it. I love learning new things! Thanks for taking us along, even if it was an illicit excursion!
I appreciate that very much, accountability is something I learned back in the military, and it goes a long way 👍
@@AgateDad I wondered if you'd been in the service. My family was, too, and integrity and accountability were instilled in us at an early age. Thank you for your service!
Thank you :) it was an amazing part of my life and was happy to wear the uniform 😀
Great agates there! My neighbour has a lot of beach pebbles in the garden, I often see some very pretty stones in there
I bet!!
You did find some nice though, sorry about the facebook dude ! LOL
Water under the bridge
My new hobbie collecting rocks etc and who would think it’s really fun I take the kid sometimes the wife . The wife and I are heading up to New Hampshire and check out some of the rivers up there I live in ma. So we have beaches close by . The beaches suck in season cause you have to pay for parking and that’s bs for a few hours of rock hunting . I like in the winter
I like winter beachcombing too, less people to compete with
😊👍🏻👌🏼
You seem nice... we should get coffee sometime 😉
@@AgateDad 😂😂 dork
😘
👍
😁
You must be a good guy in "real life" to be so honest. That's a wonderful quality, never lose that! I used to go in a gravel pit that is state land. There is a no trespassing sign up now. Since its state land and connected to a lake. Do you think the state would give permits to go in? 😊
Yea, that is A BIG DEAL! TRESPASSING IS ILLEGAL! At least they were cool about it, and you are using your position here to help keep us in line. I go to a public pit not too terribly far from where I live, but it's a seasonal pit, so there's not any equipment kept there or anything, and I feel more comfortable with that situation. That's why I stick to creeks and large size gravel roads. I'm too afraid of being arrested, and what a shame I would feel if that happened doing my favorite hobby. Ethics!!! More than just a word people. I bet you almost wanted to even take the finds back.
Yeah it is a big deal, we dont need to ruin the image of rockhounds by being crummy and doing stuff like that. I did want to take them back and if the guy was really mad about it, I would have returned them to the pit. But he was cool and suprised I even called to take accountability.
What other public places ? Just curious as I hunt around Minnesota but have yet to really find a decent spot that looks good like your videos and the rock pits look quite enticing 😌
5min Monster stikes again!!!😂😂😂
What do you mean?!
You usually find something GREAT in the 1st 5min!!! Found some beautys this time!
Yeah i guess that happens, all depends on how the hunt goes!
Are you thinking of facing some of those with the saw? Would really show the bands.
As is, some of those already shoe amazing bands, some would definitely benefit from that though.
outro song solemn like that coldplay tune...
ain't grace awesome?
Give us an orientation, charge us a fee.. please let us rock hound your gravel pits that are loaded with treasure! Thankfully, I live in a province that has only one location in the entire province that allows you to buy a permit to rockhound there. It's the only location that has Agates. 🍻
Hi there. I love watching your videos. Just want to know what you do with those agates?
Hey Cherry! I store them, cut them, I will eventually polish them, and I part with some of them too 👍
Awesome video. Hey are the gravel pits pretty close to the lake. I’m on the iron range do you have any tips for that area. Thanks.
I haven’t had any luck up there but most pits I see are private property, I haven’t inquired about getting permission there, I’d call around and ask
Will agates make a different sound then just 'rocks' when struck with a rock hammer, like a piece of glass perhaps?
No idea, you can usually tell the difference just by appearance.
How do you go about finding who owns a gravel pit if it is not posted?
What a smeagol
Are you ever going to cut any of the fire agate you found?
Maybe this winter 👍
Maybe it’s a hurricane agate
Hmmmm ill Google that
I have a question are any of these worth any money ? I’m still in the beginning faze so I’m sure find good ones that I think are trash and keepers that are trash lol I still save them anyways
Yes they are 👍
Can you cut porphyry into necklace jewelry cut slabs shape round square diamond triangle animal shapes and sell in your shop
Look up stromatolites. I think your jaspagate might be stromatolite.
I believe so, or Mary ellen Jasper
Mary Ellen Jasper is stromatolite.
@@rockhardrockhounds9970 yeah I know, thats why i said or
Wow! Awesome bands on those.... nice. :)
Definitely some beauties 👍
Fantastic video; especially the roundup and music at the end. Thanks for a great start to my morning!
Happy to share :)
Good information. Thanks for sharing. I really like your videos, although I'm a Petoskey stone guy from Northern MI... :)
Love petoskey stones!
I had wondered about permission to be on non-public property (gravel pits and gravel piles are usually part of a business or perhaps government property), glad you followed through and did the right thing. Around here (VA) you can’t remove anything from any parks (local, federal or state). I think it tends to be a bit more open further north and west, but generally easy enough to find out on web sites posted by the park authority
Yeah state parks and a no go here too
Wow, those are some great finds! It’s a shame you inadvertently trespassed, but I am glad you were honest and did the right thing. If more people were like that, the world would be a much better place imo. 🙂
I think so too, not being conceted but it just made sense to own it.
Have you ever hunted for bubble gum agate, in the bad lands of South Dakota, hunted there few years ago, brought alot of nice agates back with me ?
I have not, sounds tasty lol
Good stuff! Knowledge is king! Thanks!
Youre right!
Thanks for being honest and owning your mistake. Rare these days! Beautiful agates.
Of course, my main priority was maintaining a good image for rockhounds!
@@AgateDad I wish Christians were that serious about their testimony!
I'm sure a lot are, most good ones are hiding in plain sight.
@@AgateDad I agree.
🤘
Thanks for the pointers about right way to go and enjoy the show.
Of course, glad to help+
Nice finds and rain! No rain here like 113 days. And what's that trippy bug? TFS
Luckily the rain subsided, but that little bug was a grass hopper 👍
@@AgateDad I know how you feel about the trespassing business. On some federal lands here you have to jump thru rings to get a daily permit. And a lot of fed rockhounding areas have been closed. Some you can only surface pick, no digging. It's hard to know everything!
It really is...thats why I'm going to be sticking to the known public spots and just go deeper and look harder 👍
