I love that there is a good gap between the bands and a stationary camera. There is nothing like the sound of a pipe band getting closer and closer, put the willies up ye!

So beautiful and it made me cry buckets - but good buckets!! Back in the early 1980's I was trying to woo a delicious man who enjoyed bagpipe music ... the man for me ... anyway, long story short, living in South Africa and looking for bagpipe music (a labour of love , BTW ... Uh, bagpipes??) I finally managed to get the key to his heart (word-of-mouth, and "TDK does amazing things....") and I hooked my man!!. We had a wonderful, crazy, as-close-to-perfect as it could get with two "almost adult children - us) and after 10 years we decided to "make it a real thing" (one of the three happiest days of my life ... and I was also 8 and a half months pregnant but our split prior to the wedding was all my fault) ... I know I said short but here's what happened next ... We married but didn't make our 3rd anniversary - Mike passed away from kidney cancer when our youngest daughter was 5 months and our oldest just two!! I cry because I wish he could have lived to experience his beautiful daughters and this breathtaking music!! I never cry for my loss ... I cry for his and his daughters loss ... Bagpipes are weirdly in tune with Mike's energy and I never fail to feel that energy ... and this was a smorgasbord of Mike!!

That young boy , probably 11 YEARS OLD in the second group broke my heart , exquisite control of baton , he marshalled the band as would a veteran and superb control and no narcissism, he was relaxed and in control , a rare attribute

@11 - No doubt about it, you'd have to go a long way to find another that skilled @ Flourishing his Mace! A lot of adults wouldn't even try as dropping a mace on tarmac can easily lead to expensive repairs.

Yes in a competition he would probably score a few points but he would be in great demand for a show as he develops his skills. When he can throw it in the air and catch it behind his back. He will be a great crowd pleaser.

OK! Worldwide pipe bands take note. This is how it’s done! These bands have street presence. Nobody is looking for snakes, eyes are straight ahead. Lines are straight. Bands look serious…..no clown suits, dragon heads or Disney characters. And the adorable wee lassies following with their signs and the braw wee laddies too all set the tone that things in this corner of the world are still sane and that heritage is a worthy touchstone.
This is the sort of thing that the civilized world thrives on!
BTW….obviously there is a law in NZ that all citizens must join a pipeband. Another great idea from down under.

Just want to give a suggestion for next: If possible, focus momentarily on the boards with the band names so that we can identify them. For people like me, in a country (Brazil) that has no tradition with this wonderful culture, it is very important! Hugs!!! And please, continue with this wonderful work!

Interesting comments about the band signs. Maybe next time like the Brass Band Australian Nationals held in Gawler Sth Australia 2016. Put the sign carriers out the front. That way the Public get an excellent view of who the band is. Something for the RNZPBA to consider for future Nationals.

  • @MandyJMaddison

At 1:36.40 and 1:40:34 These bands demonstrate how much better the band's marching appears when the Drum Major sets a course straight down the centre line of the road, clearly marked, and then uses the corner marker on the road as the turning point.
Some of the bands lined up without regard for the centre line of the road, and in every case, their marching looked less tidy.
