Great, insightful review of the Byrds 12 studio albums. "I See You" is one of my favorites too. It has psychedelic & jazz elements with a lyric that is surreal in a beautiful way. I think the Byrds flew the highest artistically with Fifth Dimension, Younger Than Yesterday, & Notorious Byrd Brothers.

Back as a teenager the Byrds were my favorite recording artist during the time period of "Turn Turn Turn" through "The Notorious Byrd Brothers". My favorite would be "Younger Than Yesterday", 2nd "Fifth Dimension", 3rd "The Notorious Byrd Brothers". Funny story about that 2-4-2 Fox Trot song, the beginning part where they attempt to create the sound of a lear jet revving up for take off was done with a vacumn cleaner.
Chris Hillman (and Parsons) after leaving the Byrds and putting together the Flying Burrito Brothers released one of the best live recorded LP's I ever heard entitled "Last of the Red Hot Burritos".

I only consider the first 5 and the Reunion lp to be actual Byrds albums. The others are by a different band using that name.

Fifth dimension, heavily influenced by John Coltrane and Ravi Shankar. Roger McGuinn had just bought state of the art tape machine during British tour and band listen to both artiste constantly. 8 miles high my favorite Birds song.

@@MikeGodetteMusic I would recommend Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers, The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and Clark, and White Light for starters

Gene’s discography is pretty diverse just as is The Byrds.

Check out Silent Troubadour, an album of Gene Clark songs that I recorded recently with my musical compatriot Pete Mancini on Paradiddle Records. The Byrds influence is continuing and is deep. Ryan Adams in a Guitar Player magazine interview many years ago stated after enumerating a good helping of his musical influences, "of course it all began with the Byrds."

    1. The Notorious Byrd Brothers (1968)
    2. Sweetheart of the Rodeo (1968)
    3. Dr. Byrd and Mr. Hyde (1969)
    4. Younger Than Yesterday (1967)
    5. (Untitled) (1970)
    6. Turn! Turn! Turn! (1965)
    7. Ballad of Easy Rider (1969)
    8. Fifth Dimension (1966)
    9. Mr. Tamborine Man (1965)
    10. Byrdmaniax (1971)
    11. Farther Along (1971)
    12. Byrds (1973)
And yeah, I STRONGLY prefer the country rock side of The Byrds. Don’t like raga hippie nonsense very much at all.
