I've done a few opnsense videos, if there's something you would like covered I'm always open for video suggestions. Glad it helped, and thanks for feedback 👍
Thank you for a solid guide. I have installed OPNsense on an old PC - intel gen 4 i5. I popped in a 4x LAN PCIe card. Although I managed to install and get OPNsense running on the machine, I am struggling to find a walk through on using the spare LAN ports for expanding my network. I am currently using an 8 port managed switch for everything. However, I wanted to utilise one of the ports for running a Flux node, to keep it separate from my main network and another for a cloud server that I can access whilst away from home.
Thanks for the feedback, glad it helped 👍 I'm not sure I understand, you wish to use the lan ports on the firewall as a switch as such? You can create a bridge and the the port members to the bridge. If that's what you mean
All sorted. I have managed to utilize one of the LAN for a node which has to be ran in a DMZ. It has allowed me to configure that so the other devices (PC's etc) are on their own LAN ports on the PCIe card. They are protected with their own firewalls, ad blockers, etc. Thanks again for getting me started on OPNsense. I am relatively new to networks and have had a steep learning curve with me wanting to run nodes.@@sheridans
Saw this originally advertised in the OPNSense FB Group so was keen to see a new tutorial. I have had OPNSense running previously quite happily but never had it configured to support multiple WAN connections so if you are building on this line of videos then seeing that as a topic and also using metrics to choose which WAN connection to use would be excellent
Thank you for the detailed explanation on how to install and get the basic setup going. It would be great if you could show firewall rules for a basic set up.
At the step where you select which drive to install to, what key do you press to select the drive you want (put the * next to the drive you want)? Have tried EVERY key and can't get it.
Hi Sam. Great video. Will you be doing a OpnSense connection to BT business hub in the future? I followed your pfSense one but it did not work in OpnSense.
Staying on pfsense+ for now with a TAC-Lite sub that's not expiring until next year. I'll look at opnsense again, but find the UI a bit meh. Sophos XG Home might be a contender again. Running pfsense on ex Sophos XG Caswell hardware. Might be moving to toob in due course for internet connection, but their base package is CGNAT connected, but I think they support IPV6.
Indeed, I've got QAT capable hardware etc. So I may spend the $99 to extended. Netgate said it'd extend from the end of my current TAC-Lite expiring, so that'd be about 18 months+ of license.
It always worth having a look through the BIOS anyway, I disabled things like audio as it wasn't needed. Secure boot may need disabling if using uefi. Also disable fast startup to get rid of the silly logo 😜
It gets an internet connection which was dhcp, there's other videos on OPNsense on this playlist ruclips.net/p/PLSJyoFloAkDo52MujFRHx1J1nZonLZtZE&feature=shared including PPPoe setups etc. I am meaning to do a brief walk through of available options, if there's something in particular you'd like to see that's not covered, I'm all ears...
At around minute 5:35 you say...."I'll just get this setup"....and then the install screen shows up. What did you do to "just get this setup"? Would help beginners. Otherwise we have not idea what you did on this video. Thanks much.
@@sheridans Ah, you plugged in a monitor, keyboard and the USB stick into the computer and then switched it on. May sound trivial, or "but of course", however watching "how to" videos about something you have never done before can be helped by including even minor steps.....just my opinion. Thanks.
Good to see you back in the saddle Sam! - you have a way of explaining things that even I can understand, much appreciated 🙂
I like this video got my box running now its time to learn how to configure it

Glad I watched this. I'm new to PFSense but have decided to switch to Opnsense, which installs a little differently from PFSense. Thank you

Absolutely working on these!

Have a few videos planned on this, also taking notes of what people are requesting, this one is my list anyhow 😄
The installer is lacking quite an important feature:
Encryption for ZFS

I can certainly try it

You can also take a backup, install CE and restore, have one at home I plan to do the video on

CE will be deployed to a family member I expect with a spare Pondesk unit I have.

@@japanham5973 i plugged in a keyboard and USB stick, I plugged the monitor output into an HDMI capture to record it.
The Algorithm has brought me here :)
That works then :)
It does!
Brought me as well!
How do I do this on a Mac?
What do you need? Installing pfsense on a mac or from a mac? Depends on what you're trying to achieve
