  • An in-depth view of Tahitian pearl farming at Kamoka Pearls. Once a Tahitian oyster is 3 years old, it is ready to be grafted. A nucleus made of recycled oyster shell is inserted into the oyster. The oyster is then put back into the ocean where it will be protected from predators such as turtles, rays, and trigger fish. During this time the nucleus is slowly encased in nacre. After a year of being out at sea, the oyster is pulled back out and is ready to be harvested. Once harvested, another nucleus will be inserted to produce a second pearl a year later.
