We tape disposable pocket warmers to the feeders when we get a cold snap in the SF Bay area, keeps them from freezing over night. Amazon has pocket warmers & even the larger size which get hotter.
Plus we put a bright light on the feeders in case the little guys need to feed in the wee hours.

I know I'm late here but we sit our feeders in the shallow water of our heated bird baths to keep them from freezing. The brand name we use is Erva. But this also means the feeder/bath needs to be close to an electriical outlet.

Thanks for the tip! I have used a utility light before by drilling a couple of small holes at the top where the aluminum flairs out and putting in a couple of paper clips to hang it under the feeder directing the light up under the feeder with a 40 watt bulb in it. Does the trick! Plus it keeps light on the feeder when it’s dark so the hummingbirds can drink after sunset and before sunrise!

This is so sweet. Please do keep filming these little guys and see if you can capture some more footage. This story looks so Canadian.

Thank you! My favorite birds! I have been feeding hummingbirds for years but always brought the feeders in about 2 weeks after the last hummer I see for the winter. I want to try leaving one or two up this year just to see if they happen to stay in the area. I bought a couple of heaters online and definitely going to try them out this year!🤞

I just swap out the feeders as needed. The 1st ones go out at about 6 am. Sometimes the birds are waiting. Then I pull them after it's dark and the last visitors are gone for the night. I like it when they are flying near me when I change them.

Yeah! We have some smaller ones that migrate away for the Winter, but these Anna's Hummingbirds are year round and quite large!

It’s nice that you get hummingbirds in the winter, Bradley! I don’t think I’ve ever seen one here in Missouri after November, and the majority are all gone by end of September! Well done taking care of these little guys, that’s nice to see! :)

Anna's Hummingbirds are here year round, but that's only been the case for the last couple of decades!

Nicely done! I have a couple of those little heaters in storage somewhere, bought at a Habitat for Humanity Restore. Might have to try this out.

I'm also curious if you've since tried heated feeders and if so, gave recommendations? We're in the same region right now - currently 17 degrees. Thanks!

Thank you so much I am having a terrible time keeping the feeders from freezing this year . It must be the wind. They are freezing at the openings. I have heat packs pipe insulator and wool sock. They are still frozen in about half an hour. I am going to try this tomorrow.

The humming birds will remember this kindness. Maybe one day, they can help you too. Though I don't know how, but keep an eye out for it and let us know when it happens.

We stop feeding the Hummingbirds here in the Carolinas after the last week in September. This helps to nudge them to migrate before the cool nights come.

These guys (Anna's Hummingbirds) don't migrate. They're year-round residents here.

Sweet video. I came to your channel to see what the bullseye flake tobacco was like, and it turns out my partner and I have the exact same hummingbird feeder problem. We live in Canada about an hour north of Bellingham. We have found that warming the syrup up in the feeder's glass and using a thick wool sock and an outer wrap of aluminum foil as insulation worked better than expected. Even when it was -14C/6.8F that couple of days, the feeder stayed liquid for a good 6 hours. As long as they can get some munchies around dusk they're fine.
I also considered using some kind of heater wire, but the feeder doesn't need to be out over night anyways. as long as you can warm it up in the morning and insulate it and someone can rewarm it around 3 or 4pm, yay.
here's a cool slow mo of the same feeder a few months ago. ruclips.net/video/L-337DZdmtY/видео.html

I would do the same thing. Hopefully he will share because at my house I only get 1 hummingbird per feeder because they are so territorial.

We put out extra feeders so they wouldn’t fight & we got extra hummers!! Even tho it’s freezing here we have about 40 birds. We taped hand warmers from amazon to the feeders because of the unusual sudden freeze. And we put a bright light on the feeders in case they need to feed at night.

Most species migrate away from here too, but these Anna's hummingbirds stay year round. They rely a lot on people feeding them.

Bradly what kind tape were you using on feeder (the black tape) ?

    • @stuffandthingsyoutube
      @stuffandthingsyoutube  2 года назад

It was called "pipe insulation tape." has a sticky side and a foam side.
