Actually it's an LED driver. LED lamps come in different types, they can work off of the existing ballast, be direct wired with a hot and neutral side to the lamp, or they have an LED driver specific to the lamp. They typically look like an average ballast.

Preach . Not hating on the kid but wiring up lights is the days all electricians love to have because those are easy days . Go pull 500 or 750 mcm to a big 3phase motor . Go run conduit . You can teach anyone to do light fixtures and not everyone is an “electrician” .

Any advice for someone with no Expirience in The Job? Im about to gradúate higo school... Would it be best to just jump into a local trade school and start from scratch there?
You need both trade school and a contractor willing to take you on as an apprentice. Every state has there own license requirements so a quick google will tell all you need to know about starting the process. Only advice I’d give is if you’re looking to travel and want guarantee benefits, find a union shop! That opened the door for nationwide as well as international opportunities for myself. Good luck!
Wawwwww, love the rat nest. Take a little bit of pride in your work, cut the cores to lenght and loop them nicely and clip them instead of just shoving a hand full of 💩 in the fitting. An old spark told me years ago......if it looks like 💩 its probably a 💩 job.

Starting trade school next week nervous just how everything going to be at the end of the year and tips and what I should keep my head up on very nervous thinking about a job when I’m just gonna start the class but still
All the different colours confuse me lol, here in uk we use blue for neutral , brown for line and green+yellow for earth, brown black grey for 3phase and black + red for dc colours (never work with dc current so could be wrong)
even tho your a retro fitter you should still use some caution working on live fixtures almost every commercial building will have 277v for luminaries that being said you should loto and get insulated tools and a 10cal rated face shield.
Took me about a year before things began to click. From there new information was easily retained. But it’s a constant learning experience. That’s what’s so great about it!
Brett M He’s not really an Electrician he’s just retrofitting LEDs into old style lights. That’s probably all he does. While an actual electrician would also do this, it is only a small small fraction of what you would do. It would be pricey for an Electrician to do these easy swaps hence why they get guys like this to come in and do it for cheaper. After a year in your apprenticeship you’ll start to feel more comfortable. That being said when you’re in the electrical trade you are always learning new things. Even when you are a journeyman Electrician you will still be learning new things and how to perform tasks better
Get proper tools (cheap pair of side cutters and do most of the cutting with them, since you will blow them up), learn everything you can without cheating. You can be a dumb ass and you will get paid like a dumb ass/get fired or you can be smart and know your shit and get above average pay. I started at 20 an hour while most people in my area get 15.
Work on getting very good with your technique and quality of work before you worry about being fast... There is nothing worst than having to go back and fix your mistakes and/or waste material because you were rushing
are you working on those lights while they are under a load? I work on hot lights and other equipment / devices all the time and it isn't fun having 277volt, 480volt short out and blow up in your face.. I been shocked and hit the most while working on lights like what your doing... but I still love my career and wouldn't trade it for anything..
Bit risky mate working live. In Australia, we’re always taught to isolate the supply before working on it. All it takes is to cut or touch the wrong wire, and you’re dead or have severe electrical burns.
So i have a question, ( our light guy at my work does the electrical work too) was their something wrong with the wiring om the lights? Cause our dude just chances the LEDs
Frost H those are direct swap bulbs that cost twice as much. This guy goes in, removes the ballast and installs an led driver and swaps out for a cheaper bulb
Why would you not use a direct wire option with these lights. I get it the cost is more but aren’t you helping your customer out by bypassing the ballast?
I start trade school TODAY, actually On my way now, wish me luck on my electrical journey

I had to do lighting for places like fred's, family dollar, steinmart and forever 21. We dis retrofitting on forever 21 track lighting. We also did some Aaron's. I also did some other work that you'd have an electrician do. Like run a new circuit for new doors at a Fred's.
I’m a 20 year old 1st year electrical apprentice, working in commercial and im loving it, I’m still one of the youngest but wished high school would’ve taught us about ibew, and apprentice programs, sure college is good but why they gotta make it seem like thats the only way to make a good living, or to be successful
How much money do you make
22 been doing electrical since I was 17 and honestly it’s the only work I have ever liked,I did the random fast food job and a few others but I’m really only having fun doing electrical
Did you go to trade school and get your education or did you have a class/ shop in high school?
Thank u for this video, I am 13 years old and I rlly have strong interest in becoming Eletrician!
I started electrical when I was 18, now I'm 20🇨🇦⚡ university isn't for me
Sean Smythe doing the same, any advice?
@@papichuro620 show up on time, be eager to learn and be thankful these guys are investing their time and money into you and your career, anticipate your journeypersons next move, be efficient, work smarter not harder, don't shy away from a challenge, be safe test everything even if the journey says it's dead, don't trust anyone but yourself, if you haven't gone to school, educate yourself about some of the basic circuitry. @@seansmythe7543 are there any books for electrician work like a study book that teaches circuitry before getting into an apprenticeship?
Thinking about going to trade school. Tried college(quit multiple times). College isn’t for me either.

This is a Canadian wiring methods book but American and Canadian code is similar so u should get a pretty good understanding from this
For better connections pre twist the wires bro💯 .. I’am also a 19 year old electrician
KashStreetJay the wires are so small they will twist themselves when you tighten the wirenut.
Are you an apprentice
Alex Downard it’s encouraged to pre twist them together, and then use the wire-nut. A lot of you guys just like to take shortcuts.
Mind me asking, but do you get paid good? And would you recommend it?
Especially Solid Awg
This just the finishing touches to a project. Try doing new construction, running 4 inch rigid conduit and digging ditches for 2 yrs. Wiring up fixtures is the easy part of being an electrician
Preach . Not hating on the kid but wiring up lights is the days all electricians love to have because those are easy days . Go pull 500 or 750 mcm to a big 3phase motor . Go run conduit . You can teach anyone to do light fixtures and not everyone is an “electrician” .
@@calebwofford6165 yeah bro I experienced it firsthand. It's a good trade though nonetheless
You guys realize he said he wasn't an electrician about 30 seconds in to the video? He does retro fits. And yeah digging sucks, get your license you won't be doing the digging anymore
@@nunyabidness2143 but still he has the electrician title. Electrician’s like me hate seeing posers act like they are electrician’s and yes we have our license but we did the grunt work way before we even considered the title “Electrician”
@@nopressure7385 I got my license. He does retro fits. What's the problem? Why you letting people you'll never meet bother you? Lol. Relax bro, it's not that serious...
Do you collect the old ballasts and scrap them in for money?
My experience with these retrofitting jobs
Day 1: hell yeah a retrofit job, gravy job, gonna be an easy couple weeks.
Day 2: this is cool and all but I’m kind of over it
Rest of the job: I hate my life, I’m so bored lol
But I’m glad you love it! Just gets a little robotic for my liking!
im so glad to be working in the service/Small TI side of my company for this very reason!
every day is a new adventure and full of different code questions or opportunities for growth.
I’m considering becoming a electrician after working on cars etc for 15yrs. Glad to see how simple the day was because I’ve been overwhelmed learning and figuring out these bmw Kafas camera systems etc year after year. At least this stuff stays the same over periods of time whereas mechanics have to learn everyday and there’s no one to figure out the problem for you. I’m doing it and thanks for the video it’s inspiring me to move forwards with this last career choice of my life. Waste of 15yrs is a harsh reality.
Just as a tip an electrician actually has to now way more then he does because he only works with lamps and actual electricians have to be able to install everything electric in a house.
Thought of being Mechanic Cause i enjoy working on my Car but Quickly realize most Don’t get Paid Like they should And am Going for Electrician’s license instead it’s Never to late to make a Change 👍
A boss dam good 38 yr old here. Hope your dad has let you know how proud he is.
What I would do if I were you, when cutting out old ballasts/drivers, keep the wires you want to work with longer. It helps you and everyone that comes after you. Nice gig you got. Keep it up eh :-)
Your an electritian my guy! Im a member of IBEW local 576. Im 18 and turn 19 on the 19th. I had to do the same thing as you at Louisiana College. Every light in every doorm room had to be changed from the lights you were putting up, to a new more simple l.e.d light
Tha Kid N8 I’m 18 also about graduate high school where do you go get into this career.
Good video bro! Not many electrical videos
I’m an electrician bro and I be doing the same thing as you change Florence lights to led but I don’t be installing a new balance idk if I’m doing it right or
Yo can I ask a couple questions, I really want to get into this career and I want to know more especially since you have experience
:D bruh... stop doubting yourself. By now you're probably good at it already.
In America, it's the same concept.
Black-Live
White-Neutral
Bare Copper/Green-Earth
even tho your a retro fitter you should still use some caution working on live fixtures almost every commercial building will have 277v for luminaries that being said you should loto and get insulated tools and a 10cal rated face shield.
Do you get many shocks working live like that?
Ayee that’s pretty cool, do you work for a company or are you self employeed?
How hard is the learning curve when becoming an electrician? I’m in high school and starting an apprenticeship to become and electrician soon.
Glad you love it. But just take the extra time and let your work speak for you. Best of luck life is a leaning process work safe!!
I graduate from high school this upcoming summer and I will be starting my electrical program on August 26th, any pointers for the year?
Get proper tools (cheap pair of side cutters and do most of the cutting with them, since you will blow them up), learn everything you can without cheating. You can be a dumb ass and you will get paid like a dumb ass/get fired or you can be smart and know your shit and get above average pay. I started at 20 an hour while most people in my area get 15.
Work on getting very good with your technique and quality of work before you worry about being fast...
There is nothing worst than having to go back and fix your mistakes and/or waste material because you were rushing
Thank you 🙏
Thank you 🙏
Jack McNabb damn first day, how is it
you working with live power or you cut it off
Why did you take out the emergency ballast? I’m pretty sure every bldg needs them
GeneralSweet217 i thought the same... replace with emergency light at least... wait till the fire marshall does their annual inspection...
I'm an eletrician an u getting paid good bro , keep up the work
Cut wires to size maybe? And twist wires together before putting wire nuts
Now that deli no longer has emergency lights. The battery backup is there for a reason.
are you working on those lights while they are under a load? I work on hot lights and other equipment / devices all the time and it isn't fun having 277volt, 480volt short out and blow up in your face.. I been shocked and hit the most while working on lights like what your doing... but I still love my career and wouldn't trade it for anything..
Bit risky mate working live. In Australia, we’re always taught to isolate the supply before working on it. All it takes is to cut or touch the wrong wire, and you’re dead or have severe electrical burns.
actually not if anything he'll get shock and 120V ain't a lot, been shocked countless times 230V here in Slovenia and have no damage.
You’re doing a great job ! With you’re ambition you should follow thru into the electrical field
Like electrical engineering?
So i have a question, ( our light guy at my work does the electrical work too) was their something wrong with the wiring om the lights? Cause our dude just chances the LEDs
Frost H those are direct swap bulbs that cost twice as much. This guy goes in, removes the ballast and installs an led driver and swaps out for a cheaper bulb
@@FuZioNxYT oh okay ty
You still an electrician? how you liking it
Bro I do hvac & even I can tell you can make that wire look clean lmao
Why would you not use a direct wire option with these lights. I get it the cost is more but aren’t you helping your customer out by bypassing the ballast?
Damn, I would love to have your job! beats the hell out of climbing through attics and crawl spaces, or digging trenches everyday!
