There's a hole-in-the-wall hot dog joint in Connecticut like this, where the locals order just by giving a number. "Two today", or "Three for me". I didn't know any better and ordered a cheeseburger. I was probably the only burger order they had that day.
this man had the world. been everywhere and he still had depression. its sad because when he said something on tv about food you could tell he meant it with all his heart.
I finally went!!! I was in sales meetings in Philly and had to go. Three Canadian boys , Me from Toronto a guy from Winnipeg and a dude from Edmonton. We loved the place and the staff was awesome. Great fucking sandwich I will go back again and again when in Philly Camden is a dangerous place but I enjoyed my visit :)

I was in Camden for work and this was 3 mins away. I remembered this episode. It’s a rough town (I was born and raised Newark but that’s like Beverly Hills compared to this) but this was worth the stop as it was the best cheesesteak I ever had. Must have hot pepper!

I work in downtown Camden and live in Camden County. The hate in these comments for this city is unwarranted. The city is filled with beautiful caring people trying to live life at it's best just like the rest of us. If you're scared to go to Donkey's stay home, we don't want you.
If you also like soul food, just a short walk southeast on Haddon Avenue, you'll find Corinne's Place... like she said, "eat your vegetables!" and two massive servings come with every meal!
Actually you can go to a lot of S.Jersey restaurants and get a Quality Cheesesteak product. Just as good as Philly. But I suggest hitting them all up because each is unique and all are Excellent!
I'm 76 years old and I used to go to the old Donkeys when I just started out as a young man, fresh out of high school in 1961. Donkeys in those days was an old hole in the wall bar on Haddon Avenue in Camden. You would walk in and the place was pitch black dark inside and had wooden floors. A steak and a cold beer and I was in heaven. Throughout the years I would tell people the best cheese steaks in the US came from Donkeys and no one would believe me. I've tried the "new" Donkeys in Medford New Jersey and it didn't even come close to the old Donkeys. Haven't tried the one in Camden yet. We will see.
R.I.P Anthony Bourdain The first time I heard that he died was when I was at the park on the last day of school before summer. My mom picked me up at the park and then she sighed and said his name, and I said what, he died? And mom said yes and I was very disappointed. The first time I heard of him was when I was at a book store with my dad and we saw a cookbook from Anthony. This was either a few weeks or a few months before he died.
Rick Carroll, La Spada's! Phil & Jim's was also pretty good but with La Spada's right across the street, whatcha gonna do? I hear La Spada's isn't there anymore though. Phil & Jim's made (makes?) the best hoagies though. They'd also prepare them for travel with all the wet stuff wrapped separately. The out-of-towners that I've gotten to try both places still talk about them. I miss them and now I'm hungry.
Bourdain would, of course, go to an out of the way place. I'll take his, and the posters', word for it. Two weeks ago, I picked up my cousins at the airport and we went to Pat's and Geno's as the head of said Miami family was taking them for the Philly experience. I was giving Pat's a second chance after having a bad experience with tough meat 10 years ago. High marks this time for the meat, bread(which the head of the family underlined) and everything else. Geno's was OK, but didn't break the tape that night. Now, if the poppyseed roll at Donkey's is fresh, I won't call it heresy; I'm curious about the spices. I can guarantee crowds from the X-Ponential Music Festival if they're not there already. If they have portable equipment, they should come. R.I.P., Anthony.
Brian Griffin As I said, it was a WHOLE DECADE since I was at either place, so I measure Pat's and Geno's v what I know in my neck of the woods(Bucks) and Pat's, at least that night, got it right for my taste. If Jim's, Delassandro's etc. are revelations, so be it.
if you want a good steak in philly..... don't go to genos. They were good but are way past there time. John's pork, Tony lukes, delassandros, woodrows, and jims would be my choice. that sandwich looks good in jersey but it isn't a Philly and is no where near as good as the places I named.
lol never understood the whole marinara sauce and onions on cheesesteak, it's everywhere in Pa. despite growing up there, always had them with onions American cheese and ketchup
I literally just had a sandwich from donkey's about 20 minutes ago. It's good but it's not out of this world. There are better cheese steaks in south jersey than donkey's and certainly better cheese steaks in Philly as well. im from south jersey but i dont like getting into the arguement of sj and philly and who has the better cheese steak. honestly you can find great cheese steaks in both areas but you can also find some bad knock off ones in both areas who claim what they make are philly style but aren't. it all depends on the person and what they consider to be a quality cheese steak. i like tony lukes personally, its very greasy but i enjoy it.
I love Donkey's but they are not representative of NJ cheesesteaks. Every other cheesesteak joint in the 856 and 609 comes on the long roll, chopped steak, no seeds, less onions, etc.
These guys are really proud to have been on Bourdain's show. They run the episode on repeat at the bar. RIP.
They should be.
"I need 1 Pauley" you know shits about to be good. Pauley has been training for this, his entire life.
