    I was getting 22 broadcast channels on my store-bought antenna, some of which were of such poor quality they were unwatchable. Rather than buy a more expensive antenna, I decided to try this DIY version. It is amazing. I went from 22 channels to 36, all of which are crystal-clear. That's with the antenna in my basement. No telling what I'd get if I moved it outside. Thank you. You're a genius.

    This was a quick and easy project. I have made several indoor antennas and they work well, but this variation is outstanding. All my prior fringe stations are solid now with massively improved signal strength. I found that orienting the copper end horizontally is consistently better, which supports the fact that almost 95% of U.S. TV transmitters utilize antennas that are horizontally polarized. Thanks very much!

    I was sceptical at first but I ate my words when I made this aerial and did a channel scan. It pulled in 36 channels without any trouble and in crystal clear quality.

    I made 2 of these, in 10 minutes or less, from pieces of cable I saved (and that my girlfriend has threatened to throw out a million times.) I'm blown away! One of the installs was in my basement workshop, beneath a copper waste line and next to a poured wall (rebar.) I get 30 channels with no pixelation or problems at all. The second one went on our main TV (ground floor) and I get an additional 5. We do have cable, but it goes out occasionally. Now we have a choice. I have tried several, admittedly cheap, store-bought, and supposedly "amplified" antennas, and this simple hack blew them away. Added benefit - she will probably never question my hoarded wire box again.

    1 quick question? After you connect the cable (homemade antenna) to the back of the TV where do you position the cable/copper end? Can it just lay behind the TV, does it need to be near a window? I did not catch that part on your video. Thanks so much for sharing your time and talents with me. c. mason

      I put copper end in between the window and the blinds and I used a clothes pin to hook it to the blinds. After I made the antenna this way I scanned my TV channels to see how many channels I could get. I was actually really surprised how well it worked and picked up about 40 channels some that I didn't even know could get. It worked better than ur typical antenna and a lot better than the one I bought at Walmart for $30

      You can skip buying any antenna that claims to have a "100 mile" or "200 mile" range. That's impossible thanks to physics. There are good (and ethical) manufacturers of TV antennas, but unfortunately, there is zero regulation on what some companies claim about their products.

    HI, I have a question, I apologize ahead of time if I missed something. My understanding is, as long as you have 6 inches of copper wire exposed, it doesn't really matter how long your cable is that you attach to the tv? Is this correct?

  • @brantisonfire
    @brantisonfire 4 года назад +5

    I have been trying this out by using two smaller lengths of exposed copper coax attached to a splitter so it makes a twin antenna that I attach to a longer length of coax. I tried both a single exposed piece, and with the twin wire splitter attached and it seemed to pick up more channels and clearer reception.

      This is called a 1/2 wave dipole antenna. Each part, the 1) inside conductor and 2) the foil make up what are referred to as the "elements" of the antenna. You shouldn't cut off the foil. In fact, the antenna will be directional if the elements are shaped in a V with the widest end facing the stations that you want to pick up.

    Old(ish) video by now (Oct. 2022) but this still works great and in my major metro area it pulled in 110 digital channels. Every major broadcaster, and many alternate channels like 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, etc. The majors came in crystal clear including the local ABC that NEVER came in on the powered antenna or the supposed "60 mile" antenna. I don't know why this works so well but it's great...even on the skinny coax cable I used that came with the powered antenna. This method works significantly better than the powered one. Just follow exactly as instructed and you will be amazed.

    Thanks dude for posting something so simple to do! A few years ago I got suckered into buying a very expensive and useless antenna from crutchfield. My dad helped me put it up and I thought I had a winner on the first day (which was a clear and non-windy day) but then reality set in a few days after. Wish I had seen this before because I sure as hell am not going up and down the damn roof to adjust that big ass thing just to get a good picture. For sure this summer it's coming down as it's a damn eye sore. This is awesome!! Thank you!!!

    Out of curiosity, I tried this for a neighbor who needs an antenna and it works almost as well as my amplified antenna that I paid more than 50 CAD$.
    I got the same 8 channels with both antennas.
    The coaxial cable I used is a very cheap one bought in a dollar store.
    With it, the reception is excellent for most channels, but with a couple channels, it is somewhat more stable with the amplified antenna.

    Can the exposed copper section be longer than 6 inches? Any benefit if longer?

    • @youdontknowme5969
      @youdontknowme5969 4 года назад

      6 inches is within the average 'quarter wavelength' of UHF TV frequencies
      (The range of UHF TV quarter wavelengths is from around 6.25" to 4.25". 6" is between those and just a convenient number to work with)
      You could try 15" for VHF-hi, but usually fewer stations on that band, and the longer length might affect receiving UHF stations (which there are usually more of)
      it's not an exact science LOL
