I’ll take a 1981 Falcon 50 over any new piece of trash anyway. The 4 is a great value today. Bought ours in 2014 for 5.9. Probably only worth 4-4.5 today if that. Lot of performance for the dollar.
Biz Jet TV absolutely. Biggest upgrade investments are probably gonna be FANS/CPDLC and the Honeywell cockpit screen replacement which ran around 700k back a few years ago. I think they said they were gonna stop servicing those old CRT junk screens at some point. Also nice to add some WiFi if the plane doesn’t have it yet. A paltry 150k...
These are great points. A private owner does not need the extreme hours per year that new jets can provide. These jets are a good option for the (super rich) private owner. In fact the options have never been this good. You can buy a really solid G-IV and live like a king for somewhat real world money.
Its hard to go wrong with a G4 but I love the Falcons for their short field take/off landings! Their perfect for flying into smaller regional type airports, talking small one horse town airports. This gets us closer to our destination and helps avoid of lot of the hoopla landing in larger airports.
Biz Jet TV I was just saying that as an option, not that I really have the money to buy. I said so because the Honda jet is smaller, cheaper and more fuel efficient than those 3 on the list. So I should fall under the category of people you made the video for.
Can you upgrade the technology on the older Jets? For example, updating the electronics and engines. Want to buy one and update and customeize interior. I would like to know your thoughts.
I'm not a pre-owned fan but I suppose one can make a business case for buying older and bigger instead of newer and smaller. Have to figure out where they are in C and D checks which can run quite high but you have correctly advised to get professional assistance before buying a pre-owned jet. It would have to be someone who's business interests are aligned with yours and certainly not someone who has a financial stake on the seller's side.
You are spot on in your comments. Hiring a broker/aviation consultant and paying them a retainer fee guarantees they will be working for you & hence will have you best interest at heart. This is exactly how I do business. A pre-owned jet is not for everyone and as I mentioned needs to be evaluated on a case by case basis, again you need someone to look at your specific case.
I’ve seen cost of ownership calculators. How realistic are these? Example, phenom 300 or pilatus PC24 have similar acquisition costs and years costs. About 10 million new and about 1.5 million yearly for 400 hours use. Does that sound right to you?
It will depend on the maintenance status, avionic upgrades and what the interior looks like. If you have all that done I would say the Gulfstream, they also have better customer service and spare parts easier to find.
Fab, would it be worth it to buy one of these given the running costs and maintenance? And since it's not new would it offer any tax benefits? Thanks for the update and ideas.
That will depend on a number of factors and is very much a case by case basis. Maintenance & running costs on a 20 year old biz jet will be more expensive than a new one. When buying an older jet you must buy right and maintain and fly it properly. If we look at the Gulfstream GV or Bombardier Global Express market for $9.5M you can get yourself a good ship, compared to spending $45-50M for a new one. Taxation will depend on country and/or state of registration and local tax laws. I can guide you through this whole process and provide jet management too. There are many more that exist but the G-IVSP and the Falcon 900EX are both great as is the Global Express but by no means is it the same in range so you are looking at the different clientele. Keep the Ultra Long range to Ultra and the long-range as just that. It would show better comparing a group than just something you saw once or currently have in inventory.
Dustin, many different jets could have been displayed in this video. I made a decision to run with these three. The point is to prove that there are jets under $10M that do a good job and that you don't have to spend $30-40M to buy a jet.
