What does it mean to be handmade? Does the traditional definition still apply? is it time to change the definition? Let’s talk.
The wallet I am making in this video is the Gofer wallet designed by lauvafinland on instagram. I built this as my entry for the gofer wallet challenge.

Another potentially more accurate approach is not to try and redefine what handmade is based on how much machinery and technology has taken over so many steps, but to redefine what one’s particular products actually are, based on the whole “here we are in 2023” landscape.
A - is handmade (made with your hands with a few tools and no machines with external power - yes literally from pattern to burnishing)
B - is machine made.
C-Z is every other variation based on how and what type of machines are used in the various steps…. And can be named and defined however you like.
Very good points 👍🏻
A very good subject to talk about. And I think you made some really good points in this video 👍🏼💯
Thanks for watching!
Love your revised definition! Great vid pal.
Thanks for watching!
Love this video! Excellent insights.
Thanks Tony 🙏🏻
Yes it is hand made.
Without doubt.
I’d say it’s a process with many levels but even if you didn’t use a single machine in your workshop the leather has corrected grain like dollaro or a buffed finish like pueblo these are made by machine. So therefore In my mind if you etch a design in to leather yourself it’s no different.
Agreed!
I was up late night a few days ago thinking about this
Did you come up with an answer? I haven’t…lol
@@NorfolkHandmade I think I concluded that if you utilize your hands for a good portion of the process, it's hand made, then I went on to remember all the embarrassing things that have happened to me over the last 49 years.
🤣🤣
good video my brother
Thanks 🙏🏻
Great conversation and insight!
I am a hobbiest so I don't mind doing everything by hand but I would need to use machines to make a profit.
What sanding blocks are you using? I don't see them on your list.
Once money is on the line these lines can get very blurry. Those are from JunLin Leather.
I think some crafters should use hand stitch instead of handmade.
For sure, highlights the process that’s arguably the most important.
Personally, I draw the line at sewing. Dremel or electric creaser are ok to use, but a sewing machine no longer allows that piece to be called “handmade”. Again, this is how I see it…
That’s interesting, I personally look at the entire process but I can agree with the sewing machine. There’s something about the look of a machine sewn wallet that doesn’t look handmade. Thanks for watching!
Why need to name it "handmade"?
So in leatherworks mather what is "not handmade".
I can't accept handmade some item born from a lot of technologic and automatized process, (laser cutters or engravers, electric pattern press, , computerized design, etc). I'm not saying are not good products. Are, in the matter a fact are more precise. But repeat, why are forcing to name it handmade if they are not?
Is handcrafted in my opinion.
Handmade must to remain a really handmade thing, even is expensive. Yes, is expensive , time consuming ect.
But nowadays this trend is pushed to name "handmade" all kind of stuff made with any possible modern technology tools, why? Is simple, "handmade" presume other price category from "not handmade".
And now i return again and ask then what is "not handmade" in leatherwork?
So , seems to be like the "politically correctness" principles😂😅😊
Very good video, make us to think, so now it mean all leatherworks that are not industrialized , are handmade. Or not? Where is the line between handmade vs not handmade?
Somebody says on one leatherfofum :if is sewn on electric sewing machine is not handmade anymore, and with not electrical is handmade. 😅 Is almost ridiculous 😊😊 😊😊 , but if you stay and think on it more time....😮 it maybe not.
All good points….handmade vs handcrafted. Where is that line with all this modern technology? And does it really matter if the leather-crafter is transparent about the process they use? Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻
I think a handmade label is only a headline, the important part is the transparency of the process. If using a clicker press, sewing machine or laser engraver, these should be mentioned on your product information and ideally why. One reason I would use a laser to cut templates would be reducing waste.
Handmade means tiny variability between each product and so a uniqueness, any process that reduces this should be declared (same as wise put ingredients on food items).
Good points. What’s ironic about the laser is there is actually more waste, at least there is for the machine I have. I use magnets to hold down the leather, because of how the laser module is constructed I need to leave at minimum 1” from the edge of the cut line to the edge of the leather. If I used a clicker I would be able to place the die right beside the edge. In the end I use these offcut pieces for keychains and bookmarks but there is still more waste material. I’m still figuring out a better method for work holding.
The human body, by definition, is a machine. Therefore, handmade is technically impossible to achieve under any circumstances.
Lol, good point.
