Agreed. The guy was a novice diver in a place he shouldn’t have been, surrounded by darkness and silt. He couldn’t find his way out and ran out of air. I highly doubt that a novice diver in a highly panicked and disoriented state of mind is going to have the same exact thought process as someone with years more worth of training and experience under their belt like Gus. And personally as someone who is not a diver, I’m not necessarily saying that I would take my own life in this situation, because I’ve never been a situation like this and have no idea what I’d do in the moment. But despite that “never give up” rule, if I’m in a position like this where I feel that death is inevitable, I’d imagine that a stab to the heart would kill me a lot quicker than running out of oxygen/breathing in water 🤷‍♀️

The CMJ (Croatian Medical Journal) has the full report and there is a picture of the guy's body and the wound that contributed to his death. Alot of things were omitted from the telling of this story. When the victim was reported missing, 2 police divers arrived and went into the cave to search. Only 1 officer exited the cave. He drowned and it's believed that in the darkness he got lost and disoriented just as the victim did. Also the knife used to puncture the victim's chest belonged to him. The wound itself on the surface was 3x1 cm and the depth was 11 cm. That was consistent with the size of the knife which was stated to had a sharp pointed tip, it was nowhere near as large as the one Gus kept showing. In order to removed the victim's body from the cave the knife was removed from his chest, and later retrieved. Another noteworthy fact is the victim had run out of air, there was none in his cylinder. Its believed he was lost approximately 40 minutes and realized he wasn't going to make it without air and stabbed himself. His death was ruled a suicide by drowning along with a puncture in his left pect area that also punctured a lung. Its stated he had basic diving skills and could barely be considered a novice. He was found to have alcohol in his blood or as well and with the carbon dioxide while running out of air would've of contributed to his mental clarity and possibly induced disorientation. Its a very interesting read which substantiates Mr. Ballen's narrative instead of Gus's doubts. I've seen as few reports of this case and though they aren't all identical, they parallel each other and seem believably accurate.

    Dear friends.
I watch your videos and I admire you for your work. I am a former trained technical and cave diver and I live in Croatia. At the same time, I work for the state and I know more details about this case. First of all, the case is absolutely true and nothing is untrue.
First of all, diving is forbidden in this cave and there is no line for divers in it, so @MrBallen said that it is necessary to get a feel. All the photos shown in his video are not from a cave location in Croatia.
"Special Diver" is a diver of special police.
At the bottom of the underwater cave, at a depth of 54.1 meters, diver Miroslav Kukliš was found dead. A knife stabbed in his chest pointed to murder, and an autopsy confirmed that the death was caused by drowning and stabbing. Two suspects were arrested. These are his friends and colleagues Daniel Frolec and Ivo Koznar, but the investigation against them was suspended because the details of the forensic analysis revealed the unexpected - the diver probably killed himself after being trapped in a cave and left without oxygen. So he wanted to prevent the agony of suffocation at the bottom of the sea.
It was the first known case of suicide of an underwater diver.
It happened on September 11, 2002. Split police received a call from a group of Czech divers who reported that their driver, 31-year-old Kukliš, had not returned three hours after diving below the surface, towards the Poganica underwater cave in the southern part of the island of Solta. Before calling the police, Frolec and Koznar searched for him underwater. When they found parts of his diving equipment, it was clear to them that he had run out of air and drowned, probably because he could not find a way out of the cave.
On the morning of September 11, two Split special police divers set off in search of the body. One of them never came back. He got lost in a cave and ran out of oxygen while the other barely pulled out a living head as he found a way out at the last minute. The next day both bodies were pulled out of the cave.
In the Croatian language, the meaning of the cave is "evil and dangerous".
At the end of August 2015, two more divers lost their lives in the same cave. These are the Supetar notary Ervin Kuzmanić and his German friend Oliver E. Gansen.
The question is why is the Poganica cave so dangerous for people? The reason is probably the sludge it is covered with, which reduces visibility even when a strong lamp is used. The water temperature varies from 24 degrees on the surface to 14 degrees Celsius at the bottom of the cave. Its greatest depth is 57 meters.
Everything is true in this video, strange or not, Miroslav really judged for himself and no one else was with him during the dive. I can’t reveal more details to you because of the nature of my work, but it’s all really true.
Keep up the good work :)

I call 100% bullshit on him stabbing him self in the chest. No way he could have done that if he was that close to running out of air that he decided to off himself that way. 1- he wouldn’t have had the strength to penetrate all the levels needed to even make it to the heart, it would take a ton of force to do that and no way you could while in water from an arm lengths amount of force. You couldn’t even do that on land while completely healthy and full of air, unless maybe you had one of the sharpest knives in the world. 2- I call BS on anything you just said bc all you did was copy and paste an article you read from the internet and it happened decades ago and it wasn’t considered a murder so there would be nothing keeping you from “releasing more details”. Look up if it’s possible to stab yourself in the heart. You have an actual diver from Croatia giving you all the details saying it’s 100% true. If you have a sharp knife and you go between the tips I think it’s totally possible to stab your self. And it’s not hard to know where your heart is. I would be more shocked if if he missed. The heart is big. It’s the Center of your chest with most of it off to the left. I think it’s totally possible. Not everyone thinks the same way.

From a 2003 Medical journal article, titled "Scuba diver with a knife in his chest: homicide or suicide?" The following is from the abstract, "A scuba diver was found dead at the bottom of an undersea cave at 54.1 m water depth, with a knife protruding from his chest. Autopsy confirmed death due to both drowning and a penetrating knife wound. The incident was first considered a homicide and two suspects were arrested. Careful forensic analysis of the profile of the diver's last dive stored in the dive computer, dimensions of the undersea cave, as well as other forensic findings, showed that the case was a suicide, which the diver most probably committed while running out of air, in an attempt to avoid the agony of drowning. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on a suicide during diving."
I have to side with Woody on this one...

From the report :" The victim’s blood alcohol level was 0.114% (legally intoxicated). The increased blood alcohol must have contributed to the mental impairment of the victim already affected by nitrogen narcosis, which, at 35 m, was at least of a minor degree (5,6)." So impaired judgement led to diver stabbing himself as attempted suicide, but drowned before he bled out as Autopsy confirmed death due to both drowning and a penetrating knife wound. The actual report shows a photo of the victim with a stab wound.

Oddly enough, the story is true. The story leaves out a few details, but the full report makes it more clear that the most likely explanation is that he really did stab himself. The body was found with the knife still in his chest, and they had to remove him to get him out of the cave. The knife wound in his chest also perfectly matched the edge, width, and depth of his knife. His friends also mention that they always found it ironic that he was a diver because it was well known that he had a phobia of drowning, and often said he'd take any other death over drowning. Also, his blood alcohol showed he was intoxicated at the time, which would definitely make that fatal decision easier.
Also, the detail of him popping up into the air pocket is unknown. His dive computer showed he was at the same depth as the air pocket, but there were multiple parts of the ceiling that were at that same depth, so it's just speculation.
Really the only other possibility is that one of his friends stabbed him. That's what the police originally suspected, and the friends were actually arrested. However, after reviewing the 3 dive computers, that was shown to be impossible.
Gus is making the mistake of thinking "I would never do this, therefore it would never happen". His friends all said he was deathly afraid of drowning.

    • @scottcol23

I dont think that it was murder either. There are way easier ways to kill a diver under water that would make it look like an accident. For example, pull their mask off and yank their regulator. It would come out looking like he panicked and shed gear. I remember either reading or watching a show that went into detail about this case. and you are correct. The police accused the other divers and did arrest them. But after reviewing the dive computers it showed that the other divers data did not match up to the victims at all.

If I'm not mistaken, the investigation included checking the dive computers of all of the divers involved. They came up with an approximate time of death and concluded that he was alone in that part of the cave at that particular depth. The police, like Gus, felt sure he didn't stab himself and so approached it all with the idea that he'd been murdered, but only found evidence to contradict that theory. Tbh I don't think the notion that he chose the sword over drowning is that crazy 🤷

So I know this sounds as absolutely fantastical story but I'd highly recommend reading the actual report, since it's not from some nobodies but Department of Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine, Naval Medical Institute and Department of Forensic Medicine in Croatia. The reason, why this report has been done is that the Croatian police didn't believe this story either and investigated this as a murder. But it has been conclusively proven this is attempted suicide as insane as it may be.
There are couple of things Mr. Ballen got wrong.
Firstly, Kuklis went into the cave alone, the two other divers and any other diver present never entered the cave before police arrived. This has been proven by forensic analysis of the dive computers of all the involved divers. Second, whether he was trying to breath from the airpockets is something the report speculates about but doesn't say either way. It's one of the explanations of some depth data from the dive computer. Thirdly, police actually arrived several hours after the incident and based on combination of dive comp data and zero remaining air, he was dead long before they arrived. And fourthly, most importantly, the cause of death was drowning, not the stab wound.
I know it sounds crazy, but there's pretty compelling evidence he indeed attempted to kill himself like that. In the end if there's a dead body with a knife in his heart and no other explanation, one has to accept the evidence no matter how crazy it sounds.

You don't panic stab yourself in the heart in a way that's going to immediately kill you. Your sternum is a very hard obstacle to get through. Have you ever tried to apply a stabbing force on something through the water? Your power is weakened. The more likely scenario is as he was drowning he was failing around and accidentally was stabbed. There is no way he made the intentional decision to stab himself. The people that read the final report said he drowned and the wound was a contributing factor to his death. So he didn't die of a self-inflicted wound. He died of drowning and the wound. As both a scuba diver and med student I had to read the rapport, and there are a few key things I'd like to point out:
    1. Before the assumed time of death at 35m he had dived to 50m, and right before death to 40m 30min later. Adding to that the fact he had emptied his air cylinder, and had a blood alcohol content of 0.11%, he would likely be suffering from at least mild nitrogen narcosis (I've seen it happen at 25m) and hypercarbia, which could impair his decision making process.
    2. He wasn't actually stabbed in the heart, but rather in his left lung and the top of his aorta (the biggest artery leaving the top of the heart). And did also show signs of drowning.
    3. The forensics matched the knife wound of the diver to his own diving knife.
    4. Based on the tissue damage, and dive computers collected; the time between the stabbing, drowning, and subsequent death were so short, and at such a depth that the accompanying divers could not have been near the diver, let alone stab him, at time of death.
In my opinion this is the tragic case of an inexperienced and impaired diver who panicked and did not see any other way out, and chose to end his own life rather than suffer the painful death of drowning. Given the fact this man's last moments were those of extreme pain and fear I feel it is in very bad taste to make light of it, no matter how you belive you may have handled the situation.

Face hugger jump scare to introduce the alien. Then a bit later a chest burster. Wherever they are, they are on a multi-day expedition to explore, so the chest burster has opportunity to grow, and then stalk them during further dives.
Or heck, a company wants to step-up a water refueling base on Europa so they land there and start building and checking out the moon. Expert miners are brought along to explore.

I've heard of plenty of stories of people killing themselves upon ISIS takeovers of their land out of fear of being brutally tortured, and I've also seen mothers endanger the lives of their children in panic-enduced fenzies while they're in a car chase with police with their baby in the backseat. Panic works a lot like psychosis in some people, and it affects some more than others.

However, neither of the other divers could have based on the data from the dive computers. Investigators even tried running simulations where he was murdered on the boat and the dive computer taken down to simulate the dive. Those possibilities were eliminated, too, based on timing. They also noted that it was the divers knife used, it was a clean cut, bo defense wounds, and that the wound matched a self inflicted wound. It also noted that he had consumed alcohol. The investigators mentioned in the report that if his friends had the intention to kill him, they doubt they would of went with the knife method anyways:
"If there was an intention to kill the victim, the supposed killer would have probably chosen
a different way. It might be relatively easy to drown a
diver under the water. If another diver would approach the supposed victim from the back, tear the
regulator from his mouth, and hold him, being cautious of possible defense using a knife, any diver
would drown very soon. No knives or complicated
plans would be necessary. A killer could empty the
victim’s cylinder manually using the purge button of
the regulator and an investigation, finding no external
injuries, would conclude that the victim must have
      drowned."
I thought they made a fair point here, a knife in the chest, during an underwater cave dive is an odd, unnecessarily complicated and very suspicious way murder someone, and since drowning is what causes the most deaths in underwater cave diving, surely any would be killers is going to go with a method thats going to make it look like that since that is going to draw the least attention and suspicion....a knife in chest is definitely not a method of least suspicion/attention....

Based just on the report...it really does seem like the unfortunate victim did in fact just not want to drown, and stabbed himself hoping for a quicker death than what he knew was coming. Didn't quite get the heart, but the knife did cause enough damage to make the wound fatal in a few minutes. I dunno, we can't know exactly what went through his brain at that time, being slightly inebriated and probably a bit narced on top of knowing his end was near. In any case, poor guy. That's not what he was looking for when he decided "Ahh you know what, i wanna go see the cave too"...maybe if he was better trained he could have made it. Also might have helped if there was a permanent line in the cave, i didn't see any mention of one in the report.

As to wetsuit durability, they never struck me as being that tough...a quick search around revealed that neoprene suits such as he was wearing are damaged by things like sharp rocks, and fingernails. I'm not quite sure how he managed to get the blade all the way in (11cm), but that's the only part that seems odd to me after looking at the other data. Knife might have been really sharp. They looked at the possibility that he was done in by one of the other guys, but the dive computer data didn't allow for that...who knows, maybe his plan if he ever ran out of air under the water was to take this measure. No. Frankly that’s the most pussy, weak, pathetic, non-admirable and unmanly move that a man can make in such situation.
Do you know what would actually be the macho thing to do in this situation.
It would be to take air from the pocket, go back down to search for the exit and go back to that pocket every time your air runs out. Repeat that as many times as you must until you either find the exit and survive or run out of air and either pass out from CO2 or drown while on your last diving holding the last oxygen of that pocket.
NOW THAT IS MACHO! NOW THAT IS ADMIRABLE!

I hadn't realised also he was diving alone, going in some minutes after the others, and a bit drunk. So it starts to look all a bit Dunning Kruger: Guy has a couple of drinks with dinner and decides to go diving, at night, alone. So his judgement is already a little impaired, he's overconfident, under-experienced and not trained for the scenario. The good news for potential cave divers is that all these things have solutions!
I see the police did briefly arrest the 2 others who were in the water but found they couldn't have been involved. The expert divers consulted also found suicide hard to believe but it looks like he did indeed stab himself. You made the point that it's hard to stab your own heart, and it seems he missed but got the left lung and the arch of the aorta, which would certainly kill you in a couple of minutes. I can only imagine he was narked, maybe the air in the top of the chamber was a bit high on CO2, he still had enough alcohol to potentially lose a UK driving licence, he had no training to fall back on and he was panicked. Rational behaviour is unlikely. Very sad, and also sad they sent in someone apparently also unqualified to get the body.

My friend with bipolar took a kitchen knife and plunged it into his chest trying to hit his heart. He missed it by a fraction of an inch and survived thankfully. But he did it and was found bleeding in bed by his sister.
Admittedly he was having a bipolar episode, but one would imagine the stress of being about to drown would be rather intense too.
All that is just to say, a person most certainly can stab themselves in the heart if they are motivated to do so. Just because that isn't how you would do it, doesn't mean that's not how someone else could do it.
The way I see it, he did it so he dies fast as he's just in an air pocket. If he cuts his wrist and dies slowly from blood loss, odds are he's going to lose strength and slip under water and drown anyway, which is exactly what he's seemingly trying so hard to avoid he was willing to stab himself in the heart to avoid it.
If you are that terrified of drowning though, one would wonder why he was a diver...

It was wonderful and I appreciated his attempts at having Gus see it from a different perspective. I am utterly flabbergasted with Gus' willful ignorance and inability to accept the information that is a Google search away. That is all it takes to verify if something is official, valid information. Just because it seems untrue & completely bizarre to Gus, that doesn't change the truth of the situation. Miroslav was an inexperienced diver with the most basic training. He went cave diving under the influence, and became heavily disoriented trying to find his way out. He had a choice for a 'quick' death or slowly drowning & he made it.. Gus may find it a ridiculous choice, and untrue, but it doesn't change the fact that it happened. The official report stated that he had a wound in his pec. The cause of death was a punctured lung and ultimately drowning. Those are facts. You cannot argue, nor disagree with facts as though they are simply opinions. I really do enjoy your guy's videos, and I will, of course, continue to watch them. But, I just felt like Gus did a huge disservice to Miroslav and his family by disregarding the truth of his death.

You are actually missing the point as you claim Gus does. You say it's absurd he doesn't believe the report because the report is the truth but really you are mistakenly assuming that the report is factual. Gus is actually making less "errors" than you are in your assessment of him.
The only people who truly know what happened were in view of him when the knife entered his body.
Personally I think bringing someone into an underwater cave to kill them is the most unnecessary and ridiculous place you could possibly do it. To me it's absurd to think someone planned that out, however I certainly concede that it could have just ended up playing out that way.

I was in a pool and in an innertube floating in the deep end when someone knocked my out. I didn't know how to swim and I remember sinking down. I remember the terror and panic of holding my breath until I could not hold it any longer. I remember breathing in water, coughing it out then breathing in more water. There was no pain at this point and at this point there is a discontinuity. Suddenly I was on the pool deck everyone is around me and a guy is trying to get me to breath.
Now there is pain. Lots and lots of pain. So much pain I can't even describe it. I'm coughing so much I can't breath but eventually I recover. I got to ride in an ambulance but the paramedics were really mean and kept poking me with sharp needles. That hurt and I was crying but mom was there.
I spent the night in the hospital but I was okay.
There was no pain at all when I drowned. There was plenty of terror, but no pain at all. All the pain was when I was revived, and if I had died, I would not have experienced that pain.
At the time I was 5 and my sister was 3. She saw the entire thing and to this day she has a deep, *DEEP* fear of water.
Later that summer mom signed us both up for swim lessons. This was something I very much wanted to learn. I jumped in with no fear and was ready to learn to swim. I knew that if I could swim I wouldn't drown again But my sister is just utterly terrified of the water. She still does, even though she's 50 now.

If there's already a hole, you don't need to make another.... When chest tubes are added for collapsed lungs, they don't go into the lung, they go into the thoracic cavity to fix the pressure issue. You can also deep suction the lungs from another hole called the guess what... The trachea and main airway. You don't need to stab more holes into the lung.... Children have much smaller veins, and are less likely to be patients in ambulances, so them struggling to get IV access leading to multiple attempts would explain OP's need poking situation. They're not going to stab into the chest and hope to hit the lung, which guess what, if you did that, the water in the lung would spill into the pleural cavity, leading to a possible collapsed lung even after you get the water out... let alone the infection risk. I don't see what you're trying to argue, its NOT going to happen as there's always better routes to go. The lungs can stretch, if you force air into it, itll displace the water with coughing alone most of the time. Also, you can drown with very little water in the lungs, theres a thing called dry drowning. So when a person drowns, they dont just suck so hard their lungs completely fill with water. Water is painful for the lungs, youll be stuck in a state of your chest contracting and keeping water out for this reason once you get some inside. Youll cough and suck very shallow breaths leading to only a little water in the lungs, then youll pass out and die.

Interesting to read the report. As best I understand it, it seems that the stab at best simply caused him to lose consciousness and then he drowned as he sank. They ruled out homicide but when they questioned military divers they rejected suicide as an answer. That said, seems the fellow may have been doing some drinking and when coupled with any form of nitrogen narcosis (which they seem to suspect to at least a "minor degree") may well have led to what we would consider to be very irrational or uncharacterisic behaviour. Finally have time to watch y’all’s videos again. I’m with Woody on this one. When you brought it up all those times, Gus, I thought you had some evidence that it wasn’t true but at this point, I do think this happened based on the evidence out there.
My theory is that the guy was already suicidal and/or mentally disturbed and that this was the thing to drive him to do what he did.
As someone who has personally struggled with anxiety and depression in the past, I can say that the way we think is illogical. His suicide doesn’t make sense because his internal thoughts didn’t make sense (assuming the report is accurate). I do think it’s an absolutely bizarre way to kill oneself as he could have slit his wrists with far less pain involved and a much higher chance of accuracy. I think that is probably the primary reason why his suicide borders on unbelievable. Many people are petrified of drowning and so if he believed his doom was absolute, I do think it is understandable why he’d want to end his life earlier than drowning would have killed him.
I really don’t have any theories as to why he would have stabbed himself in the heart and not slit his throat or wrists which would have been a much less painful way to go. However, he wouldn’t be the first to end his life that way, and he won’t be the last, even though it is uncommon.
If he was murdered, which isn’t unbelievable, it hasn’t been proven, so I don’t think that assumption can be made.
Anyway, I know it’s hard to believe but sometimes these things are just unable to be explained logically.

    • @miashinbrot8388
      @miashinbrot8388 2 года назад

Yes -- I was wondering if perhaps he had (likely without telling anyone) been considering suicide for a long time, and when he was trapped in the cave he might have taken it as a sign. If he had already been semi-suicidal, dying by stabbing himself could have seemed much less scary than for someone who is mentally in a better space.
Also, assuming the official report is true, Gus was quite right about it being hard to actually stab oneself in the heart. Miroslav didn't stab himself in the heart -- if he tried, then he missed and hit his lung instead and did drown in the end.

He could've also just had a disorder with impulsivity as a characteristic such as adhd or BPD, which may have contributed to his decision

This was great but I think im with Woody here, without motivation to assume he was killed is strange. But you're applying your training and experience to someone else, it's hard to tell what was going through his head.

That’s hilarious, I was totally with Gus. Makes no sense to me to be breathing an air pocket and then stab yourself. But apparently according to the report we were wrong!

17:06 as said in the case study published in the Croatian Medical Journal, homicide was the first thing police thought and the other divers were looked at as suspects, every scenario was looked at, but the autopsy and his dive profile as shown by his computer excluded all those scenarios and finally led the authorities to conclude it was a suicide,
The autopsy showed the cause of death was suicide by both drowning and stabbing.
    The paper is very interesting.

Chances are he did stab himself, that is because inexperienced divers don't know what to do in certain situations and panic. Remember that panic causes desperate irrational actions, which may explain why he stabbed himself

I can't stop laughing, it's hilarious watching you two. I can see Gus' point of view. But I have heard people who would rather not drown, then die anyother way.

people die from suicide all the time its really baffling to me why gus is SO CERTAIN that it would never happen when someone is facing down dying in the way they fear most

I thought I explained it on the video…the guy had found air so he wasn’t at risk of “running out” plus dive knives are terrible plus how do you stab yourself in the heart accurately through all your gear plus on and on
And I didn’t say it would never happen, all I said is that I can think of other ways this guy ended up dead and don’t automatically buy the “official explanation”. But yet somehow people who automatically buy the official explanation without question claim that I’m “close minded” 😂

I do not know what happened with the poor man in the story but I enjoyed the debate. It's obvious you guys have a strong friendship and have a lot of respect for each other even if you differ in some ways.
