Constant Creation

- Filming projects take a lot of time to setup, and unless you are doing consistent client work they are often decently spread out. For me recently, I have found shooting tiny 'Micro projects' has really helped keep my creativity alive, and given me a chance to stretch my creative legs. The great thing about shooting tiny personal filming projects is that you can make mistakes, experiment wildly and completely fail without it being a huge issue. Something I plan to do a lot more often in the future!

I should clarify - I have shot small personal projects in the past. But I always had a ‘reason’ to shoot them. For some reason it never quite dawned on me to just go and film for the sake of filming. Decide on the plan as I go out the door!
Hi mumbo
Mumbo who would you say is your favorite movie director and why as well as your favorite short film or any other freelance director.
Yes saameee
Mumbo grain is always taking that door of yours 😂
Ok I’ll just not-

Hey Mumbo! I feel you on the 'actually getting out there and filming" part, a lot. When I went to study at SVA New York, I did a double major in advertising and film (I'm normally only a ad major but I want to get more into film) and my professor told me something really important and I feel like it's something all filmmakers should hear. Guy's a genius. He said: "once you have the idea that you have no idea what to film, get out immediately because it means your brain is hungry for new things to film, coming up empty is an opportunity." And even though that's simple as hell. It was so important to have him say that. Love your stuff, wish I had your gear, keep shooting!
Love this! 🤟

My favourite part of this video is that little “cya” wave you did, made me smile and chuckle abit. Love how you push people to do what they love, telling us that we can do it, no matter what. Unless you’re in quarantine. But brilliant video Mumbo!
I'm a visual artist and I've heard it stressed time and time again the importance of daily drawing. For some reason it never occurred to me that the same thing would be applicable to filmmaking. Why did this video blow my mind?

Mumbo, you’re right, sometimes it’s great to get out and film for the fun of it, because you don’t just learn, but you also love what you do. It’s like that for a lot of things, really. Thanks for reminding me of that. :)
And don’t worry about the hair, you’re still the same cheery, silly, handsome person with a professional flair!

I enjoy the inclusion of your early morning shots. I love stuff like that personally. Just early morning shots of quiet locales. Just something oddly peaceful about it I guess (not exactly sure).
I guess it's just a preference for some, that find seeing the still quiet before the day starts as something serene. Personally it.. almost annoys me, and I find early morning shots to be mostly unenjoyable. Which is probably because of my love of the night, and the cold/isolation related to it, instead of the day and the brightness and the people etc.
It's just largely subjective
Mumbo!
Here's a little thought. I know that you think too much. I know that can make it seem hard sometimes to create, to be happy with projects, and then subsequently get the motivation to go out and create more, but I just want to say the following:
Your Ideas Inspire. You constantly inspire myself, and others, to go create. To go make new things. To go make old things new. To just get out there and do it.
There's a couple of videos I have in my favorites playlist that I turn to when I'm lacking (in any area). This video will become part of that small, meaningful collection. This is because this video will remind me of the thoughts I had when watching it, and the feeling of motivation that came along with those thoughts.
Thanks Oli, hope you read this mate.
Mumbo:
I’m sorry that I have long hair
Me: you look just the same
That's such good advice, people always get hung up on having the "right gear" to do a project when it's usually right in front of them. I find myself making the same excuses sometimes with my videos, then I realize I just have to start doing and it all comes together!

That's what I love about filming. You can plan it for months and have a brilliant outcome, but you can also just have a spontaneous morning of filming and the end result is just as strong.

This video kind of feels like a call out as an artist. I sometimes spend weeks or months not drawing anything because I can't make something perfect. Also, buying new art supplies. Constantly.
I love seeing your films. They're so beautiful
Can u do lessons on lighting and stuff like a series I really want to get into photography but I'm not very good with things like angles and lighting love ur channel and would love to see a series. Thx
I think the coolest thing about filming is that everyone can look at a beautiful film and say it looks amazing, but it takes a true genius to shape a scene to look incredible.

BRUHH WTF IV SEEN U COMMENT EVERYWHERE
That little comment at the end about just shooting with an iPhone, you just pumped me up even more. I have been using the excuse I don't have a real camera to not go out and do photography, but I can. And I have some beautiful photos using an iPhone. So now I want to take photo right now. Even though it's dark outside. And I'm injured.
Whatever I have a photo in my mind I'm gonna go make it
how to be a filmmaker:
- think about stuff that would be epic
- look at cool tech and buy some good stuff
- plan the film
- just film something random and try to make something from it
:D
Thank you for this Mumbo, I’ve been struggling with my confidence in filmmaking and it’s because I feel like my equipment is inadequate. Seeing that someone I look up to struggles with the same things eases my anxiety and moves me to get back out there. Keep creating, it means so much.
I’d love to see you film some landscapes
I feel like Mumbo is that one big friendly person that doesn't like to fight, with a lot of patience, but will literally delete you out of your existence and will utterly beat you up if you actually try to hurt him or his friends.
This was SO inspiring. I would like to become something of a filmmaker myself but I never found the right time / courage to actually do it. You were so insipring right until the last second when you made me remember that I'm in quaratine. xD Nevertheless I really appreciated the video and your message! Wish you all the best.
It SEEMS obvious but seriously there is not a lot of great filmmakers out there and there are so many more people sitting around having all of the equipment and doing almost nothing with it. Myself included. Every other commenter here included. This widely successful RUclipsr included, up until recently. This was a good video to make, and I found it inspiring.
As a professional actor, I hope to one day work with you by chance. That’s all I have to say.
Hello fellow cat
@@nyltiac169 Likewise, Feline friend
Mate. This is so relatable. Ya know, ACTUALLY doing something... takes a lot of energy to get going, but really most of it is in your mind, mental blockers, called being a "procrastinator" in truth, we all are a bit. until. we get going, get a routine. (it counts for evrey kind of activity)
Thank you for making a video on it, really an important topic which needs more attention
Thank you for sharing this experience with us. It's so inspiring to see a person I really respect learn something new, and manages to change something it himself. I have a hobby, photography. I have my mom's old camera, and take it on trips and stuff. You really made me want to just go out and find something interesting to film or take photos of. Keep going!
Duuude, I love these 4fps slightly off clips side by side!! What a nice discovery :)) And also: you talk from my heart. I am just starting out and what worked best for me is just going out every weekend and just film. Also also :) the Last film I did, I got up at 4 am, biked out into the woods and found this unbelievably beautiful lake with fog on it and the sunrise .. It's so dope to just go out and film!! :)
Hey Mumbo, love your vids.
For once I’m actually early!
I had to go out yesterday and take pictures of an ecosystem for my online class, and at first, I wasn't really interested in doing it. Then, after getting my dad's good camera, an on-the-go lunch, and hopping on my bike, I found myself outside the local cemetery. Once I got in the rhythm of taking pictures, I really started to enjoy myself, and stayed to eat lunch there! I still can't wait until the quarantine is done so I can do a photoshoot with my friend for their cosplay, but finding little things to do behind the camera now will definitely help in the long run.
Wow I’ve never been this early to a vid before
I loved this video, and it spoke to me a lot - I’m not a film maker, but I am a writer and musician. I often fall into that trap - “well if I have this better style of pen or a nicer keyboard I’ll write better” or “if I have [insert music accessory], I’ll be able to practice more efficiently and better… when in reality it is often so much more about just writing more or playing more music with the plethora of tools I already have.

You're first
That is such as great statement. People would ask other people who are really good at what they do, or stay in shape, or be healthy, or whatever, for their secret recipes. And most often then not, they just get disappointed when they hear there's no "secret" at all. If you really want to be good at something, you just... go do it, with great consistency and persistence, for a very, very long time. It's incredibly boring. But one day, you'll wake up and realize yourself that you're better at what you do than most people around you.
why would anyone want to dislike any of Mumbo's vids?
They missed the button I Guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Same! I procrastinate so much, thanks for the reminder just to go out and start filming whatever!! It doesn't even matter, I might as well practice

I've been struggling with the will to do anything this quarantine at all. I've been in quarantine for about two months, and have been only focused on finishing my college semester. I love to paint and draw but have been putting them off because I didn't feel like making any major painting or drawing. I forgot the first rule of being creative, which is do what you love everyday. So thanks for the reminder Mumbo,

"Plant punch"
I'm personally not a filmmaker, but a 2D artist and I did the exact same thing with my art projects. I always needed a reason to make them. Either university, inktobober, mermay and all those challenges and "prompt months" that are out there. But... I kinda lost the feeling of just drawing for the sake of it. So this year, I set myself the goal, that I will just keep drawing, no matter if there's a reason to or not. So by now, whenever I watch videos or movies, I have my sketchbook or iPad next to me so I can start on some random doodles. Some of them will be inspired by what I watch, some of them are absolutely random and I love it! It's been a lot of fun and I have learned so much as well by, sometimes semi-accidentally, trying out new things.
So yeah, what I'm trying to get at is just that, no matter who you are and what art it is you make, you don't always need a "real" reason for it. The art itself should be reason enough and hearing that once more in your video really just further encouraged me. Thanks, Mumbo!
when your so early you cant think of anything funny to say

I'm not a filmmaker in anyway, but this video inspired me. Because the same principle applies in every type of creative craftsmanship.
I consider myself a musician and partly a song writer. But I rarely work on new songs. Just continue playing the same stuff over and over again.
And now, after seing this. I came to the same conclusion, just do it. And things will often work themselves out.
Thanks!
I think your filming talents are summed up just by this video. Even just the setting of you talking looked amazing; 10/10 lighting.

Thank you for making this, Mumbo! Ik that feeling. When I took a film class(which then got me loving film making and made me change my major to film) we were given about a month pre production, 3 days to film and almost a month to edit.
