Rock 'n' roll was still relatively new at that particular time. There was still an alienation between the older generation, who didn't like/understand rock 'n' roll, and the kids, as there had been in the 1950's. The person at the control panel monitoring the screens wasn't familiar with the Beach Boys music (likely being older), so he didn't know which camera to switch to at what time. Either that, or they didn't establish much going forward in rehearsals. If you want to see a good example of a crew that is apparently unfamiliar with the music they are filming, you can check out the Beatles' first recorded concert in the U.S., at Washington D.C., in 1964. The crew filming it really didn't know how to highlight who was performing, and as a result, the filmed performance looks unprofessional, by our slick standards of today. On the other hand the way it turned out really makes it something of a timepiece.
Everybody is blaming the cameraman, who is only following the Directors instructions. Directors never wasted time listening to songs and was probably totally unfamiliar with the song. To them, it was just 3 minutes of filler before the juggling bears came up.

@@Fool3SufferingFools Carl and Al learned how to balance their voices in a living room, around a piano, without mics/amps. John, Paul & George learned how to balance their voices in front of one maybe two microphones & nightclub amp systems in smoky Hamburg, German dives. Carl and Al didn't need to "lean into" the mic to be heard. They could balance and harmonize by ear.
Afterward, Carl probably caught one upside the head by Murray for having gone "rogue"
@@firstlastname3865 Well, their voices may have been balanced, but they certainly weren't audible!
Kinda seems like a mistake, given the slight hesitation there. Yikes.
Wonderful song and performance!
Mike already looks like he’s 40
One of the best bands of all time, those cats were really cool!
Amazing simply because it's authentic- so rare.
This is way better than the studio version!
This guitar solo sounds better than the organ on the studio version!
So the guitarist plays a solo and the dopey camera person focuses on the drummer !
Fan-service for the ladies. They loved Dennis
@@mattdeluccia153 LOL - Dennis was th Idol!
They focused on the best looking guy in the group. The camera guy knew what he was doing.
It's not the camera man, it's the director in the booth. There probably WAS a camera on Al or Carl (whichever was playing teh solo), but the director cut away to the camera on Dennis. This is a common tendency with TV directors. They'll show anyone BUT the guy who's soloing during a solo. They might even show the guy playing rhythm guitar during the solo, patting themselves on the back "Well, I showed teh guitarist during the solo, what do you want?"...yeah, you showed the WRONG guitarist (or sometimes, it might even actually be the bassist).
It's 1964. Clueless times.
Dennis, the most loved drummer in history.
His wife he punched probably didn't love that too much. Some people even frown upon marrying your cousin, shocker
@@joemorton8009 "I like this person. Oh, well here's a reason why you shouldn't."
Thank you, kind sir. You didn't have to be here, but you were.
Excellent. The Wilson Boys!
Remembered when first aired, think I was 9th grade. Music was great then!
What a tight unit they were..Dennis was so cool..
