Beware of yellow jacket nest in the behind tge dead husk of the fronds lining the side trunks of cabbage or sabal palms. They are common and if you pull the husk unaware you, others near you, including dogs/animals could be severely injured they will attack and chase you in large numbers. This has happened to me and my dogs.
And beware of large dirt mounds and just small holes in the sand in general I remember as a kid steping on a lot of them as a game and having a huge swarm of bees or wasps attacking me
Here is another good thing about melaluca. We used them for building chicken huts with the thatched roofs. The melaluca grows very straight, the bark comes off easily, and it is fairly impervious to rot and insects. It is also medicinal. To thatch the roofs we used cabbage palm. Just FYI. Oh and vf thanks for your videos.
for fire ant bites vinegar as much as possible as soon as possible. I once got fire ant bites at someone's house I went to Whataburger burger and used my pickles to calm the fire ant bites. Great video! I noticed a lot of dried pine needles on the ground, those would also work great for tender, also pine bark, the sap(fresh or dried) & the cones.
You can feed fire ants. Give them some thing out side camp to invite them to work...or put piece of meat on their mound keeps them from hunting meat in your bag..if your ca.ping few days I usually bait the ants outside camp
Thanks so much for your great content. I just moved to FL and am trying to build up my area-specific knowledge; so this is incredibly helpful. You probably saved my life a few times in the future already :-)
Miss Primrose I usually am in long pants and boots. However, I do go barefoot and wear sandals a lot as well. You won't catch me hiking in deep swamp barefoot, but where I am here I tend to go barefoot a lot. It's good for the feet in strengthening and keeping them healthy. It is a risk I take and can't recommend it though. As far as the ticks go it doesn't matter if you're naked or clothed your getting ticks on you in Florida haha. Almost every time I had one somewhere. Thanks for looking out though and watching.

John Lindsay Hey John that is great to hear. It is an enjoyable skill set to have. I've always wanted to visit Scotland. It is where my last name Rambo originated.
the flip flops pushing down those palmetto bushes like that makes me just worry for a rattled snake like a little ground rattler or something usually like to be around those palmettos
You typically hear them long before you shove your leg into biting distance, on top of that they're more likely to run away if you take it slow and make your presence known.
Paper trees don't grow in Tn. and if you can't find water in Fl. your not looking, its everywhere. As far as the Palmetto, cut the top with a machete, about a foot from the tip, and you'll get more heart of Palm.
Todney W Nope the Australian Paperbark is definitely not in Tn. The birch tree is though. I'm not sure what water you talk of. I've spent a lot of time in the swamps. The water and streams are mostly brackish. Unless you're in Ocala. You should check out my video on multiple ways to find water in South Florida. As far as cutting the palm with a machete, you spend more energy doing that than putting in. They are not that easy to get into. We would use a chainsaw to get all the cabbage out.
Rambooutfitters I live in Lehigh and grew up down here. As long as your more than about a mile from the shore the water is fresh, otherwise no one would have a well down here. And I've worked in land surveying for many years, have cut more palmetto than I care to remember and never used anything but a machette. Maybe you should sharpen yours.

Virginia Creeper! I was going to ask about that because I became more and more allergic to it but I never new its name. That crap grows all around my Mom's house and I used to wrap it around my arms to pull it out of the trees until one time I broke out so bad I had to be put on Prednisone for 10 days. I could actually see the little climbing claws from the vine on my skin! Now if I even touch anything that it has touched I break out badly and it lasts for more than 2 weeks. North East Florida.

Hey I know I'm super late but I'd stay away from snails. They're the #1 carrier of parasites and some of the common ones are pretty gnarly. But a bamboo spear can be a great tool for spearfishing in shallow water. Snare traps as well.
