- Today we are touring a pre fabricated/prefab home in Los Angeles. This is a one bedroom one bathroom backyard home build by Cover. This is what about $200,000 will get you in Los Angeles (excluding land cost) for a luxury pre fabricated home. Note - this is footage from February, I initially wanted to tour another larger pre fab to show the differences, but due to current circumstances I am going to wait until it is safer to do so!

Shelby thanks for actually doing your research and talking about the Sears part instead of reporting it as a brand new thing. Gives you way more credibility and was really interesting to see!
Khudso wouldn’t be surprised if she has a research assistant/writer to do that part of the work
@@jennyk.8349 I bet you're fun at parties
Jenny C. Ok and?
Karyn Taylor, if it’s a Craftsman style home purchased from Sears, try around 50-75 years ago. LOL...Knowing that a Sears once sold homes through their catalog is pretty much general knowledge. If she were really on her game instead of saying...baaannnkkrupppt, she could’ve added that Sears of yesterday was very similar to Amazon of today, if Sears would’ve taken their catalog business and transition pad it and their customer database online, there probably wouldn’t be an Amazon as we know it today, just a Sears.com!

This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.
"traditional homes take 3-6 months to construct" however "prefab home take roughly 8-10 weeks in the factory and 4-6 weeks on land" ...so nearly the same amount of time for the average home
Bobby Vidal I noticed that also. 16 weeks equals 4 months.
Stupid marketing technique by using weeks to make it seem shorter than months but nearly the same amount of time
But like, that's the whole idea of prefab. They're meant to be ready for a customer, otherwise why don't build a house traditionally. So you can say it takes 4-6 weeks only.
It’s not really the same 4 weeks is about a month 6 weeks is a month and a half 8 weeks is two months 10 weeks is 2 months and a half not really the same
yeah but most of that is in factory time so, not onsite - pissing off the neighbours making a hell of a mess and could get damaged by weather - time
I live in a 1948 Sears House - very solidly built! All the 2 bedroom houses in my neighborhood Glenmont, MD were Sears kits. These were post-WWII houses built in DC suburbs to house Federal employees in 2 bedroom starter homes. I love my house, it has been improved by various past owners including me.
My mom still lives in a sears home. She loves her house and it has a lot of character.
@smile cute It's the OG pre fab house
@smile cute Um, it's discussed 1:00 into the video.
smile cute, it’s called a Craftsman Home. Not that she mentioned it by this name in the video, but did you even watch it?
@Grim Reefer that sounds great, congrats on the hard work. Do you have any register of what you've done so far? You could like totally have a channel about the restoration process of your home. I'd so watch that!
Yep. Real Craftmans and Craftman Style homes are nice. They look good and real ones are highly prized even though the design is 100 years old.
Nice, but it defeats the whole "affordable" aspect of home buying. They should really try to strive for an affordable price point, $50K to $100K
Agreed. You can build a great tiny home for $50k-$100k
@Yuriy Pasternak That 800K is very misleading, by the time you find land in a decent are to put down your prefab you are not paying that much less.
@@joellouisfire You can buy real homes for that price. People just think they're entitled to more.
That's right, for that money you can spend 100k on renovations on your actual home to increase its value and get a second mortgage and the other 100k put on stocks portfolio.
EXACTLY!!! I hate I just wasted my time watching this!
200k is an outrageously high price. spend another 100k (375 a mont) and get the land, and a house that's 6x the size.
This is not affordable living? I’m struggling to understand the purpose of this video other then advertising for the company. She forgot about pre fab double wide houses that are all over the country. They cost under 15k for over 800 sq feet. Also wolf subzero are elite brands this is more of a house for rich kids who can’t handle living further then the backyard from their parents.
A Leifer you can build tiny homes and shipping container homes for under 60k!
bronwynalexandria lol 60k for a shipping container. That’s like $300 per square foot. Again not affordable nor sustainable. Shipping containers were not designed to house people.
I feel scammed after watching this video lol.... looks like she just wanted to produce some content to make some money and "fuck it i kno this one guy livin on daddy backyard lets film", this surely aint for any1 "normal"... I mean this is nearly the price my beachfront 1 bedroom apartment cost, not quiet but still....
this is a pretty normal price for a kinda old 1 bedroom appartment in my city, for example a 650sq feet one bedroom appartment from 1970 costs $300.000
That toaster oven is $700 alone...
$500 per square foot construction cost not even including land is stupid expensive.
I know companies who do this same quality or better for $80-100 a sqft.
yeah exactly; you can get like really good stuff for $250 / sqft and this stuff looks actually really shit too
I migh aswell build a tiny home myself lol just follow guides on youtube and buy materials, and buy solar panels.
It "works" for the masses, as mostly are stupid and get duped into everything even if it makes no sense whatsoever lol
Right,
"cost of living is too high, so people are looking at tiny homes"
"oh btw this home costs $200,000 and only fits one person"
yeah its crazy. but still cheap for LA. Anywhere else other than LA or NYC, this would be a fucking joke
I made mine for 30k so It can be done and it has 2k square feet prefab
After I bought furniture and evrything else including land it was about 50k
so cheap!
@@HelamanGile how much would it cost you to build the same one he did?
We are having one! Starting hopefully next month. It was a bit delayed but we can’t wait to move in. Ours is a little bigger though :). Big thumbs up so far for this start up!
any updates on it or maybe a tour?
How much does it cost? How big
Do you regret it yet?
@@Zhenkaaa of course they do, its a garden shed for 50k that they pay in installments to make it seem cheaper
Love this house and the concept - I can imagine living in it. Yes, please do more of these videos on alternative home building concepts.
this actually looks super cozy and also yep never heard of a pre fab! so interesting
If Ikea made a home this is what it would look like
Ikea is already building houses, but they are crap.
Building description is not precisely defined. Contract clauses disadvantage buyers, especially in the event of construction defects. You can only have it built in defined locations. You should pay for everything even though construction is still underway. Known technical defects, sound insulation, subsequent installation of sockets, for example, not possible. Buyers are bound to a specific energy provider for at least 15 years.
www.boklok.com/
But cheaper
And I'd purchase it too
And you’d have to put it together yourself 😂
indeed
"Sears, yes Sears, ... like bankrupt Sears" 🤣🤣0:46
Sears was a great company, you communist.
I love how he "lives" there but everything i can see there tells me nobody lives there.
you can see some of his belongings around the house, i think he just wants to upkeep the minimal look
well he probably really cleaned it up for this video to make it look good since he’s a big part of the company
Well he has a pot in a fridge. That doesn't seem like something they'd put in there if it was just for staging. It's normally just food that makes it aesthetically pleasing.
I'm a minimalist, my place has even fewer things. That's probably his case.
“The size of normal houses” NO! That is a mansion wtff.
Tiny houses are actually the size of a normal house in the Netherlands.. US houses are like castles to us
DutchClawz really so what a family with five kids
Same here in the UK!
Gamer Lily Yeah what? You think most people can afford houses with 5 bedrooms? Those kids are sleeping together 😂 If I search for houses with 5 bedrooms the first 2 I see are $1,6 million and $2.7 million
@gamer Lily ask the asians
@@DutchClawz In Texas, a house with 5 bedrooms 4 bath which is around 4k sqft is about 400k+
Less than 400 square feet for over $100,000? That defeats the purpose of it.
In LA, that’s a pretty normal price even with the high end features.
Remember that the target buyer is a low IQ individual, likely an unmarried woman, white, "spiritual" but an atheist, supporter of socialism, and has a gullible idiot ready to cosign the loan.
@@LexBexify It could be the nicest box, but putting it in LA automatically gives it a negative value. Just like you can make the most delicious lasagna, but your dog takes a shit on it - will you still eat it?
KC Roeder I’m in DC and a 600 sqft 1 bedroom condo from the 60’s with old appliances and bathroom fixtures, that needs some renovations, goes for 250,000 dollars. To get a sense of the value you’d have to compare this to the price of a 400 sqft luxury condo unit in LA.
It might seem expensive in absolute terms, but like she said, for what you’re getting, and compared to equivalent options in LA, it’s probably a good value.
@@richardparadox163 terrible value, 200k WITHOUT land. Do you know how much land costs in LA
The real problem is that people's wages can't keep up with costs....
houses are overpriced. you don't need more than 6000 usd in materials to build a decent house
@DeadlyButSilent2 the problem is that the government won't let people build cheap housing. Taxes and licences and not allowing anyone to build whatever they want on their land will make housing expensive
@DeadlyButSilent2it's their land. You have no right to tell the what they can and cannot do on their land. Either you believe in total freedom or no freedom. It's called property rights.
@@mattbanks3517 globalism and open borders are the problem. Oh and also democrats lol. Sounds like Fox News copy pasta. Seriously deranged stuff. Yoooo...they’re tripping!!! I built a simply tiny house in my moms backyard for 2.5k, not 250k...sure I don’t have floor to ceiling windows but jeez dude

His pause, as if he was delivering some mindblowing information was hillarious.
Are built-in fridges not common in the US or something?
Hahaha, riiighhttttt????!!!! She seems to be puzzled by everything, lol. "Induction stove.." "ooooooohhhhhh!!!!" Her eyes go huge, lol

Not everyone knows how to spell knew, though.
@@Leo-gl8fl thank for the correction, English is not my native language.
My great-grandmother’s house was a sears house, and it is still standing today!
The old historic houses look way better than those new boxes.
I'm really excited for the future of prefab houses. I love to travel 3-4 months a year, so having a small home is ideal for me. However, I will need a small garage as my other hobby is cars lol. I definitely think I could see myself living in something like this in the near future. :)
Her surprised face about the induction cook top
Just wondering: Is the concept of using induction for cooking not that common or known in the US?
Is it also not common to have a build in fridge? I see a lot of free standing ones but I thought that's just the expansive version
I think it's somewhat known but I had never actually seen it- maybe I'm just living under a rock though haha
I was puzzled by this too. Same with the built in fridge and wall mounted toilet.
Here in the UK I remember seeing an induction cooker at school, teacher telling us it would be the future, but I don't know anyone who has one so they're kinda rare here. As far as I know you also need special pans for them.
As for the built in fridge, seen those before, but I'm not keen on them. For some reason I prefer having the fridge in the open so a lot of people probably feel the same.
It's very common know but many people don't know that they aren't the same as old convection cooktops
They are in the US but only in very high-end kitchens and then not in most of those.
The reaction in the kitchen is priceless... dear Americans, this ist last century technology...😉
My thoughts
Thats what i thought as well. Kinda weird having this guy explaining induction cooktops, its like having someone exlaining how a toilet or a lightswitch works.
@@max_tio_ He probably did off camera.
The reaction to the in built fridge was also priceless😂
It has nothing to do with geography. This isn't new to americans. It's new to idiots just like LEDs.

Shelby's videos are definitely so slept on!! you can tell she takes the time to edit them and puts so much work into them
I would love a home like this especially if its cheaper than a usual cost of a house
what woulda been economical would have been to convert the existing garage structure into a 1 bdrm house for 1/4 of the cost of this sterile eyesore
Tthom2, no, American houses old fashioned like from several generations ago.
This is almost 5 times the cost of a regular home per sq.ft so...
@@venom5809 . . . . . not to mention . . . . 5 times uglier too

I adore tiny homes! We have been working on some artist-themed designs, hope to build them in the next year or two here. So fun to have a tiny out back for vacation rentals or work / craft space. Glad you're getting the word out about them. I see the comments that it's not affordable...but if you live in LA.....that's the best you'll get, unfortunately.
OMGGG I WANT I could use this as a studio space in my backyard for business.. Thanks for sharing.!

Good video!!
Great job explaining the cost! Very succinct, well explained video.
HOUSING IS INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE IT COSTS TOO MUCH SO WE HAVE THIS OTHER OPTION A SMALL HOUSE THAT IS ALSO EXPENSIVE
Seriously buying these kind of pre-made tiny houses isnt worth it. The only way this concept really works/ is financially functioning is if you build it yourself. These companies building these houses dont do it because its cheaper for you to live in, they do it because the market is expensive and so they can also be expensive and rip people off. A normal handy person could build a house this size for less than 10 to 30 k depending on what materials youre using. Youre not moving into a tiny house to have it exclusive. Youre doing it to save money and to live simplistic
schnooleheletteletto man that’s business if you can make it yourself then do it.
Lol
10-30k hahaha lol
schnooleheletteletto this will only really work once companies like these get big enough and can be if it from economies of scale to lower their prices

Kylee Nixon they’re insanely expensive
@@nombre1248 that depends largely on your budget and how much you choose to spend. This is a very very high end example.

Shelby is stunning!
it’s the most normal thing in europe to have your fridge built in and with the same top as the rest of the kitchen
Here in the US it is much more expensive to build a built-in fridge. It’s more economical to buy a fridge that fits your space.

It's sad thinking I might have to move away from my family because Southern California is so expensive. Most people say "just move!" if you are trying to find a home in California, but some of us were born/raised here and want to stay near our families.
Same! I can't imagine living anywhere else
LilySkye i love SoCal, so i’m sorry to hear that 🥺
Experiencing the same think living in one of the most expensive cities in Canada. All my family and friends are here, why would I want to move other than the part where I'll have to rent for the rest of my life :(
Same. I moved to Oregon this year for more affordable living and I gravely miss my familia in LA.
I gave up my shared room in a 3 bedroom apartment filled with 6 girls in SF for my own room in my childhood home. It can be tough moving back in with your parents if you can, but you’re saving so much money in the long run. Plus, I still get to be with my family and get to live comfortably in California for a discounted price. The thing about moving out of CA is it’s hard to move back in.
you should definitely do a series
Im discovering this wonderful content. I love the minimalist and modern look
I built a similar Tiny Home a couple years ago, but I was still impressed with the design and build. Several things similar to the one I built, but several things they did better, as they had a larger budget and more space. Good job!
@Bill Cosby It cost me about $53k, and I built it myself, with some building assistance from my father (who has over 50 years of construction & carpentry experience) and some design assistance from my mother. )

AnnaDaA I’m from Belgium and we have both.
I prefer newer model of gaz stove over other gaz stoves or induction versions, for me they are the safest.
Mine for example you have to twist and push the “button” for it to work and release some gaz. You also have to approche a flame to “light” not sure about the word) the stove. So kids can’t use it by accident.
Of course like any other appliance you need to use it as it was designed and maintain/upkeep it.
Most accidents happens with older, not well maintained models.
In some rare case someone forget to turn it of and wakes up with a mild gaz intoxication. Death by gaz leak is pretty rare nowadays.
Hope this helped.
