How to make your riffs and chord progressions more complex using embellishments

I've heard people say that bass notes give the other notes something to sit on which is an interesting way to think about it, that helped me understand a bit better (I'm very new to music in comparison to a lot of people so sorry if this seems obvious, I've been teaching myself guitar the past few years)
