I thought it would be difficult to replace mark Lamar but Simon Amstel was fantastic on this show

If I was the head of the BBC I'd have paid Simon Amstell his weight in gold (better make it double as I doubt he weighs that much) to host NMTB - the show was never better than with him as host.
Agreed. He was likeable and absolutely savage at the same time. I loved his stint.
Frankie Boyle was great, but I guess they couldn't have him permanently
Lamarr is the king of Buzzcocks. He was savage towards guests, suffered no fools and still managed to stay on good terms with them.
Amstell was savage but he burned a lot of bridges and scared guests away which only killed the show faster.
@@nicosmind3 He was especially acerbic and brilliant because of his rare appearances. I do wish there was more of him though!
I don't see what's so funny about Mark Lamar.
When Simon left the show, it was over.
@tipped jungle both good in their own way. Too different to compare. The show was a different beast under both of them.
It would have been alright if they could have got Frankie as a permanent host
Frankie Boyle hosting made it great. Along with Martin Freeman.
Ray Von some of the guest hosts were really good. Rhod Gilbert killed it for me

He had a lightning wit, a very particular sense of humour. Not jokes, per se, but damn what a funny man. His talent and this format was an absolutely perfect match.

As for why it's not on anymore, the ratings were terrible. The people who watched it loved it, but barely anyone watched it.

I think Anthea Turner might have the best sense of humour that’s ever been on this show with Amstell.

She really should have replaced Bill Bailey as team captain instead of Noel Fielding. Her energy was perfectly matched with Simon, and they clearly liked each other a lot.

To be honest I thought he was a bit of a prick!!!
I worked on Buzzcocks for 2 years, not a glamorous job, mostly running around grabbing stuff and moving it somewhere else or getting drinks. But Simon Amstel was annoying as hell to work with. He wasn't funny, he got frustrated when other people didn't find him funny or were naturally funnier than he was and the only tool he had in return was sarcasm, but not in the Mark Lamarr way, more childish. ALL of what you saw on screen was scripted and came off the autocue which he was terrible at reading. He usually had to read every joke 2-3 times and by the time they got a recording right the audience had heard the joke so many times there was no laughter. That was especially bad when after 3 hours of filming an episode (that's how long it takes to get a 29 minute show) they then reviewed the material and realised they had to go back and rececord bits, it took so long and everyone had to pretend it was the first time they'd heard the joke for reaction shots etc
