"It’s always been a statement in the back of my head that’s my mom waking us up at 5 in the morning. I seem very confused. Of what was going on. We gather our small belongings and we walked to a church to pray to Guadalupe. Everything just didn’t seem it was going to be a normal day. Not knowing what kind of journey it was going to be and that journey was to come to LA, to the United States. I couldn’t figure it out because I was too young to truly know exactly what was happening. When I first started attending school, everything was different. So I felt like I was Frankenstein. I didn’t belong here. I would sit in the back of the class instead of trying to figure out what they were saying, I began drawing. The drawing in class got me into trouble. I drew Randall, the teacher approached me and Said how come you're not paying attention, how come you're not doing the work? But the problem was that she didn't know I didn't know how to speak English. They would call el mojado. I think I was more angry that I didn't understand. Not just the teacher, but why they would leave everything behind. What made me get out of the shadows was to show who I was, and I remember I did my first self-portrait and I painted myself angry. It was the first time I sold an artwork. Especially $120, it was a lot of money and so I’m like wait, “I can do something that I enjoy doing and make money? Maybe I should be an artist!” I wasn’t that Frankenstein that I thought I was. I wanted to design my own loteria cards because it was part of my Mexican culture. The number 1 card was in mojado that was the painting of my father. That was from my first two man show with Dan McCleary. My own loteria. I want to tell the truth of what’s happening. Because that could have been my mother and one of my sisters. My whole family is what keeps me going every day. I don’t see myself not being an artist. It was through Dan and Art Division that I was able to open this door and they changed my life.” - Javier Carrillo
