I remember talking to a co worker and we were discussing music. She asked who I listened to and I said BTS. She asked who they were, so I pulled up something on you tube. Her response? Ewww, they're Asian!. Really pissed me off. Another said "why, when you can't understand them?" Ever heard of subtitles? This same person listened to Desposito on repeat. I said "you don't speak spanish, why do you listen to it?" Cause it's a good song. SO IS MUSIC FROM KOREA! So is music from any other country. What makes english so superior? Open your mind and yoy'll discover a whole world of beautiful music.
Late reply here ... it is not much of a surprise & stretch that that type of xenophobia, racism & prejudice goes back decades & centuries, especially in the United States, where the country was founded on all 3 of those aspects. Manifest Destiny. That superiority complex & mentality is still here today, although a tiny bit more relaxed, especially in western countries. When someone says "Ewww, they're Asian!", that is the evidence of the thinking that went on centuries ago that still lives on today. "StopAsianHate" was also huge evidence that that hate is still here, it just happened to come out of the woodwork during the recent pandemic. KPop is an industry that is rooted in western music. The origin of KPop is the United States, not South Korea. In fact, most of Korea's modern music is westernized. If any music from Korea uses 12TET & also uses guitars, piano, sax, drumsets AND electronics, then that is the concrete evidence of westernization. There is a reason why BTS & KPop resonate with fans worldwide & that is because most of the world has also become westernized, through physical, cultural AND musical conquest. Had BTS & KPop been making music in traditional Korean music theory & styles, they would have never left Korea & still become a niche industry, much like Korean Pansori & Trot music these days (of which Trot music itself is also from the US). So there is some dichotomy & juxtaposition when it comes to BTS & other KPop groups, as they are all originally a western concept, yet they are sometimes discriminated against by the west. It is something that haters & lovers of KPop/BTS are not much aware of, until now after I've explained it for those reading this, heh. 06/17/24
An info that is missing is that bts was not originally invited to bbmas, then bang pd did an interview when he stated that bts had cleared the day of the bbmas in case they would be invited. After the intervew army went hard on social asking for them to be invited and only then bts actually got an invitation. Basically, usa's industry didn't really want them there but army kinda forced them 😂
ON was my rabbit hole 2 years ago..I am 63 years old and never noticed the make up. In my past musical appreciation there were hippy bands, hair bands, hard rock bands and pop bands... I went through so many musical changes that its just a musical expression - much like a great guitar or dancing or make up ( think KISS ) 😂. People now a days just need to learn to let it be. If its not your thing - move on, no reason to attack what you don't like or understand.
This is one (of many) of my favorite moments in ARMY history. I was still a "closet army" at the time (so sad!) but they were so pure and GENUINELY thankful for the opportunity to be there. It wasn't "how much of an impact can we make - let's take advantage" - it was "ARMY gave us this opportunity - let's not waste it" and there is a HUGE difference.
can I just say, I appreciate you three for being genuine in your reactions? I started watching your BTS reactions yesterday and now I'm binge-watching your RISE OF BANGTAN series. I also agree that not all who feel uncomfortable when they first see the make-up & other stuff unique to kpop doesn't automatically mean they're racist, there are people who are used to it. It's not always about the initial feelings/thoughts, it's human nature, what matters is what you do about them. Will you be an "a" or explore and try to understand? I'm enjoying your reactions guys! Thanks for appreciating BTS!
On the subject of the makeup thing and the whole K-pop soft esthetic, it challenges the western male beauty standard of the tall strong muscle man with the sharp masculine face. BTS are God's sent to a lot of girls and women who prefer guys who are closer to them and it's an eye opener for guys too. Shaking mentality is a good things 🦋
Sorry - I am obviously commenting as this goes lol - but it's INSANE to hear JK say something like "this is a once in a lifetime opportunity." they really had NO IDEA.
You guys hit a lot of points that’s real and we can just hope that someday everybody will just RESPECT each other. It’s free to dream and I have FAITH that we as ARMY will continue to support BTS and will forever be INSPIRED and be PROUD of them! BTS FIGHTING!!! 🫶💜🫰🏼
Elvis was critised for make up coloured outfits and called a girl. Michael Jackson, David Bowie Elton John and many others. BTS had to start with that look and conform to that image and gradually move away from heavy make-up. In other words they grew. Just look at them now in 2022. I'm a senior Army and definitely understand where they were coming from. AMP theory have really smart honest intelligent reactions. Thankyou💜
I forget who discussed it and where - but this day caused a bit of an issue for RM. He got very overwhelmed as the day went on and felt like there was so much pressure on him. I think Hobi (?) and a few others said this is part of the reason they started to focus on learning English - so RM would never have to go through this again. I can't imagine how hard it was on him - there is so much we didn't see too.
I appreciate you guys being honest about the makeup thing. It can be a little jarring if you're not used to men wearing makeup, but I hope people can understand that it's an aesthetic just like anything else. The whole "men shouldn't wear makeup" idea is rooted in homophobia (whether we want to admit it or not). But as long as we approach these things with an open mind and allow ourselves to grow as people, I feel like it's okay. After all, we're all a product of our surroundings and not all of us are lucky enough to grow up in a perfect environment. The only thing we can do is try to keep an open mind.
I was in my teens in the 70s and my 20s in the 80s, I listened to lots and lots of rock n roll, most of the groups/artists I listened to wore loads more makeup then most of the K-pop groups do. So, I just don't understand why people have hangups about the makeup. If anything, it enhances their looks, not that they need any enhancement, LOL, they are gorgeous men and women to begin with. I am relatively new to K-pop (3 years now) and I have to say that I am exclusively ARMY as I only listen to BTS as of right now. I have heard other songs by other K-pop groups and some I like and some I would probably need to listen to again to make a rational decision. For me, right now BTS is the most I can handle. And as Peter said, racism is unexcusable!! What is sad is that they are STILL receiving racist hate!!
I'm from Europe we're used to listen to songs not in our language. When i didn't know any English i still listen to English songs and i didn't care about language. I don't care what language song i listen to is. Good music is good music. And most of us are like that but when it comes to any Asian language people are... weird. I don't know if it's rasizm or language preference but it's like that unfortunately.
I loved your discussion at the end. Thank you for being so open and honest about how your opinions and thoughts may have changed through your journey. I was happy that you broke down your thoughts about the Twitter and racism part of this video. They were pushing the more racist tweets quite a lot in the video, but I do think that the majority of it was that people genuinely had never heard of BTS before this point. And they seemed to come out of nowhere in the eyes of many in Americans, so they were frustrated that these people who they’ve never heard of had “taken” an award that they felt should have gone to their favs (like Justin Bieber or Ariana Grande, more recognized names in the US at the time). The fan wars within Korea and the rest of the world can get just as nasty (remember the trending of JHope is ugly, etc, in earlier episodes). So while some of it was definitely racism (Twitter is kind of a breeding ground for echo-chambers of all sorts), a lot of it was people not knowing who the hell BTS was and feeling like they “took” the award from their fav artist. I appreciate your more thoughtful take on it, as a lot of reactors just get furious and don’t even take the time to think it through. You can be mad that the boys had to go through that and see those kinds of comments while still acknowledging that the majority of Americans had no clue who BTS was at that time. Thanks for your reaction💜
Extraño mucho a BTS este episodio y su reacción me hizo sentir muy emocional y nostálgica al tiempo. Thank you for your honesty! That's why we love you. Fun reaction as always. I'm proud of of seeing this family grow 💜 By the way, J-Hope featured on a new song from Crush called "Rush Hour". Very groovy and funky, please check it out :)
How hasn’t anyone from the US seen, heard or read about male singers, actors and the like wearing damn makeup??? That’s so ridiculous. Anyway good reaction guys, see you on the next episode.
I believe that everyone that goes on stage, TV, or acts in movies or music videos wears make-up, so picking BTS out for it is just ridiculously stupid, it all comes down to the fact that they are afraid of their success.
This was when they still thought BB was the pinnacle of the music industry along with the grammy's... That's why they were so emotional. Now, they've seen all. And we've seen all. But we mfing won against JB, Ariana, Selena and Shawn. YES! And just as a note, I've been watching award shows all my life, and not even 5% of the artists refer to their fans (even if it's not a fan voted award). Keep an eye on that, that's why Bangtan rises. Because they stay on the ground even if they are all that. And much more. The racism never stops. Not only people on twitter or trolls, which would be... meh. Personalities. People with a platform are such a$$holes. The makeup jokes... like all artists present wear fuc*ing makeup. ALL-OF-THEM.
Magandang umaga guys. I haven't seen any episode of The Rise of Bangtan . This is my first, i cried buckets when they won their first BBMA. Thank you guys. Love your reaction as always. Borahae.
There are all kind of racist people and yes can't be defeated.. It's about defending sistematic racism.. And that is about the people we give power to, in politics and administration, from presidents and other elected leaders to schools directors and teachers
Make up on male performers isn't strange to me here in the UK, as in the past we had glamrock and new romantics, amongst others, who wore far more at times than those in kpop. Twitter is particularly toxic at times and the right to free speech that most of us have is no excuse for some of what I see on there. We should never use people being different as an excuse to being unkind, racist or otherwise. Great reaction, thank you guys!
This makeup 'thing' is wierd in US... Elvis got critisim coz makeup and moves, Michael Jackson use makeup, visuals, Prince... never heard glam-rock?... maybe in Europe we are more use to it or do I just feel that way? Mozart was makeup (and wig😂), meny UK /european bands even back at 80-90s, Duranduran, David Bowie... punk/rockbands... Everybody on tv use makeup, theater/movies... but people maybe really dont THINK about it, so they are😳? 😂 Sorry my english and greetings from the edge of Europe

Personally i think the "racist" term is way over used. I just think there are people who are mean and rude without necessarily being racist and many post things to incite response. The whole make-up on men thing is not unique to Americans being put off by it. Even in Korea where it is more common and accepted, there are still a whole lot of people also put off by it. Remember the interview with SUGA and RM when they were criticized as not true hip-hop because of makeup? In some Run BTS and other behind the scene videos of the guys-- you see them remove their makeup as soon as the filming is finished before going home. So my point is, we need to stop accusing people of being racist just because they make a negative comment about KPop make up. I
You are right to some extent but you should not speak if it’s racism or not for a Korean or Asian person. It’s for them to determine and what it’s is from their perspective.
@@somyasingh8193 no one can speak for an entire group of people. We all can only speak for ourselves and our opinion, although sometimes we do express things in group terms. I put mine out as you did yours. As RM would say… “Speak yourself.” Frankly ethnicity should not limit someone ability to think and express thoughts. But since you require a race card- yes I am Asian, unless you’re one of those people who don’t consider Philippines to be part of Asia. So, by your standard i qualify to express my remarks. This is an example of how you judged me to not be Asian and you’ve never even met me. The same goes for so many ARMYs who accuse people they’ve never met of being racist. It’s a sad representation of what BTS stands for.
@@sjm5750 to be fair, i think the reason they said what they did, is because only the people who are from that race will specifically get first hand experience with racism, and others won't necessarily know what they go through truly. and also they didnt judge you at all, they didnt want to assume whether you're asian or not.
@@sjm5750 I did not assume your race in anyway. You are literally putting words in my mouth and assuming whole lot by yourself. What is sad is you speaking over BTS experience with racism itself and other ppl who identified with it. What’s this “same goes for ARMYs” this is not a fandom thing, I think you understand it very well. It’s literally ingrained in the system effecting whole lot of ppl than just the Korean Music group. It got more highlighted through them. Which made more ppl speak about it. I don’t know how you are invalidating experience of so many ppl just cuz they belong to a “fandom”. You get to have your opinion but not to invalidate others experience. But goodbye. Have a nice day
@@somyasingh8193 I got a bit heated with my response to you and I'm certainly not looking for a fight so I apologize for coming across that way. It's just the racism card is thrown out so much and it's a hot button for me. When you responded with "you should not speak if it’s racism or not for a ... Asian person" that certainly came across to me that I should not express my opinion on the matter unless I'm Asian. I found this remark to be divisive and insulting. I had made my post specifically regarding what Peter was mentioning at the end of the chapter because of clips shown in the chapter. Clips of ARMYs of all nationalities and colors accusing people they don't know (of unknown nationalities) as racist ... not because of remarks said directly about as them, but internet remarks said of BTS and more specifically remarks about BTS' use of makeup. My point is, we need to accept that not everyone will like BTS. Just because someone express a negative remark about BTS like the use of make up or looking like girls--- we shouldn't accuse them of being racist. Accusing someone as racist who most likely isn't is worse than those who are making fun of BTS' make up. Anyways I hope you have a good weekend. I do want to live up to the positive message of BTS. Borahae!
That's lots of bull. American exposed to artists with makeup way before KPOP. Like KISSS, THE ROLLING STONE, ALICE COOPER, OZZY, MICHAEL JACKSON and many many more. That was acceptable by the American. Along came some Asian boys than is not ok.

This episode always makes me cry

Great reaction as always ...👏👏👏👍👍👍💜💜💜
Yessss 💞 great reaction as usual
How hasn’t anyone from the US seen, heard or read about male singers, actors and the like wearing damn makeup??? That’s so ridiculous. Anyway good reaction guys, see you on the next episode.
NO MMS GOT ME CRYING AT CLASSSSS
Wow, you guys! You move fast!!! Thanks for this and rest between reactions! ^^
You cured your ignorance (like MANY OF US) - and that is the difference
Magandang umaga guys. I haven't seen any episode of The Rise of Bangtan . This is my first, i cried buckets when they won their first BBMA. Thank you guys. Love your reaction as always. Borahae.

Love your reaction
Iam an Asian and i really appreciate your opinion thank you
There are all kind of racist people and yes can't be defeated.. It's about defending sistematic racism.. And that is about the people we give power to, in politics and administration, from presidents and other elected leaders to schools directors and teachers
There’s something wrong with that boy 😂😂😂😂😂💜
Gracias por reaccionar a los chicos y sj historia ,por favor siganlo haciendo 💜
Make up on male performers isn't strange to me here in the UK, as in the past we had glamrock and new romantics, amongst others, who wore far more at times than those in kpop. Twitter is particularly toxic at times and the right to free speech that most of us have is no excuse for some of what I see on there. We should never use people being different as an excuse to being unkind, racist or otherwise. Great reaction, thank you guys!
GUYS please react to crush and j hopeeeee
Y ACUERDENSE,NO SON MONEDITA DE ORO,PARA CAERLE BIEN A TODOS!!! ADEMAS USTEDES SON UNOS HERMOSOS PRESIOSOS SEXY BOTE!!JAJAJA

Next time plz react to it's summer rock Jin go by all about BTS Jin channel. It will show another aspect of his voice. Rock genre is his favourite genre.
I’m not & never have been on Twitter for this reason as their will always been hateful, stupid people allowed to speak their toxicity and prejudices freely without judgement or consequences unfortunately

As RM would say… “Speak yourself.”
Frankly ethnicity should not limit someone ability to think and express thoughts.
