  • On this episode of Street You Grew Up On, Kerry Washington and Daniel Dae Kim travel to the picture-perfect town of Easton, Pennsylvania. Daniel’s parents immigrated from South Korea and worked hard to provide their family with “The American Dream,” while still preserving their culture and traditions. Even though his family moved around, he traces back his fondest memories to the peaceful street of Blenheim Drive. The diversity and sense of community opened Daniel’s eyes to the world, and what it meant to treat everyone with love and respect. It wasn’t until he moved to a neighboring town that wasn’t quite as idyllic as Easton. Through years of self-examination, and questioning his value, Daniel was looking to find his place in his new home. Carrying this passion into adulthood, he created an outlet of self-expression that represents all creeds and walks of life in harmony through his production company, 3AD.
About Street You Grew Up On: Simpson Street is where our journey begins. It’s the street that Kerry Washington’s mom grew up on in The Bronx, NY. Through this social series, Kerry Washington interviews artists, influencers, and industry experts to uncover their origin stories, amplify our common humanity and affirm the value of every individuals' journey, beginning with the “street they grew up on...”

Mr Video. Block busters. Save the last dance! A Friday ritual. Get Debonairs pizza and whilst we wait for food, go to Mr Video. And then the normal arguments after movies and dinner - who is going to wake up early on Saturday to return the video. Brings back memories!!! Brother wants to watch an action or western. I want to watch a sci-fi. Sister wants to watch a romcom. And folks want to watch an Indian movie. And we could only get 2 movies. So an entire debate occurs in the movie store between a family of 5 of which 2 movies to get. Fond memories.

Wow…. Really loved this w/DDK. LOST is my all time Favorite series and my first introduction to his work. Then I loved watching him opposite Tony Goldwyn on The Anthrax series. Such an amazing, eloquent speaker. His outlook & energy is infectious. I LOL when he described the yelling from mom’s on the street for dinner. My mom was the loudest on our street and my old friends still mimic her echoes. Love that you are doing all these interviews Kerry. Such an intimate way of getting to know these actors. Can’t wait to see who’s next.

I think Daniel really Nailed it at 12:30 when he mentions media and entertainment as one way to effectively change one's view of the world through different plots that can shape one's opinion regarding, politics, ideologies, ethnic related opinions etc.
We have seen this recently through movies such as "Touriste", a Russian produced movie, displayed in Central Africa countries with the goal to change the publics perspective on Western culture in order to fit their Agenda, we see this often in kid shows as well, subliminal messages that influence and shape the views of younger generations regarding the current world.
    Very interesting topic.

@@joannebaker4925 it's called.. I will just ignore the fact that my family started out in the Bronx New York City.. and the disassociation from the Bronx and New York city.. it's called Reinventing yourself .. like a lot of immigrants and people who are not from the New York City area do.. reinvent yourself and create a new history for yourself.. instead of owning where you really started from.. it's still racism .. enough said.

@@jamesbrown9553 Please 🙏 it appears as if you're being a bit defensive. I'm just attempting to get you to view this interview from another perspective. Remember our life story evolves from the many different life experiences and circumstances we have encountered, through the course of life journey. All I'm saying is that for him the most impactful and memorable time in his life was growing up in the suburbs, that when he was old enough to have experiences where those experiences left a lifelong impact on his life. Remember, Daniel said he immigrated here @ the age of 1 yr old and he then spoke about his experiences beginning in 2 & 3rd grade which is when he was old enough to internalized his surroundings and life experiences. To me it's not that he's being dismissive of being from the Bronx ,it more of him sharing where, when and how his experiences help to shaped his world view and it wasn't in NY but in PA. I can certainly understand that can't you. Listen, I too immigrated here As a young child and lived on 164th street in Mahattan for 1yr but then relocated to Chi-town. I often tell people when asked where is home..I'm from "Chi " because that is where I spent the years growing up that were the most impactful in my life. I never leave out NY but I always say Southside of Chicago,#Morgan Park area#Cook County Illinois is home. I didn't get the racism part from Daniel but perhaps I missed something in what Daniel conveyed in his interview. Anyway, just attempting to provide another perspective. BE blessed 🙌.
