  • My revenue recap for the year of 2022 as an amateur sports and senior portrait photographer. I was really content with how much I made in my first year of photography and am very optimistic for the year of 2023. I hope this gives encourages new photographers not to be so hard on themselves for not earning 6 figure incomes in their first years of starting a business.

Hi Fatal Onion, I'm a sports dance photographer and I'd like to give you a tip that you might find useful. Since you make contracts for each event per athlete, you can also make proposals for contracts by sports season and propose to the client a photobook based on the work of the sports season with only the best photos of that season. The period contract would include the photos chosen by you and edited and delivered to the client for a certain price and the photobook (offered separately) and in which the client could even choose the photos of the period work to be included in the photobook. I do that and rarely the customer refuses the photobook. It's a much better proposition than selling single photos.... don't limit the number of photos you deliver.... deliver everything necessary for the customer to be satisfied with the work. Try to take pictures of the athlete with his family, the podiums, reactions and photos that show the athlete's relationship with his family and friends. Introduce yourself personally to the athlete's parents to further promote the relationship between the client and the photographer as this relationship is even more important than the job itself.

The photo book sounds like a great idea. If you wouldn't mind sharing some more info how you go about doing so, I'd be interested!
As for photo delivers, I tend to give more than 15 but avoid sending multiple of the same shots. Trying to add a good variety from what you mentioned, happy or sad emotions, family time at the end of a game, game warmups, etc. With me going into my second year of sports coverage, it's become a lot easier to socialize with parents and athletes. A lot of them have actually reached out for me to cover their senior pictures. Which really is a great feeling. Certainly agree relations go further than just the job.

Hey there! Great Video! I have a question for you:
When you started to take clients, what type of business did you create? LLC, Sole Proprietor or something else?
    Thank you!

      Hello Luis!
When I first started out, I never really "created" a type of business. I didn't want to overwhelm myself with the business side of things at the start with forming a legitimate business if photography never went anywhere. Now that I am closing in on my first full year of photography work, I am highly considering forming an LLC over me technically being a sole proprietor as my business is earning much more than when I first started out.
      Hope that helps!

Hi Fatal Onion, can you help with tips on getting new business for a photographer I know ?
She specialises with women in sports and is looking for commissions in UK motorsports.
How could we reach out to this people in this space ?
Your response would be much appreciated. Thanks!

      Hey Richee!
A bit of a late response as I didn't notice this comment. Did your friend happen to reach out to them? If she did, how did it go?
As I don't know the rules to motorsports, I'd attempt to either contact the company themselves or maybe some racers who may know who to contact in regards to photo services. Say there is already established photographers with the motorsports events, you could always reach out to them too asking to join along.

Is that debt from your equipment or overall? I built up a lot of debt myself for buying my gear but it certainly is paying itself off this year. So, it's great to see the return on investment!
