For the language learners out there: the 4% rule also applies to us when it comes to choosing something to read. When we don't know over 4% of the words in a text, guessing what they mean becomes harder and the reading may become too tiring, leading to loss of motivation and interest. I've just started another semester at university and I haven't let myself think "omg, I'm never going to be good enough to translate those texts"; I tell myself everyday that the skills and vocabulary I need to master in order to perform this task are like a mountain in my way and I can see myself reaching the top in a few months, provided that I commit myself to walking a few miles everyday, no matter what.
+Ana Paula Costa Same university as you(languages) first year,i'm grateful that i learned all of this informanition early so that i can apply it even more now.I just study in class and an hour inbetween classes and already am doing good progress and 10pages in advance in all subjects that's enough for me to finish with great score.Just keep making daily steps foward, preoccupied yourself with daily progress and before you know it you will wake up at the top of the mountin.I'm suprised myself how much better my life is since i started making everyday changes for the better even if they were very, very small i appreacite the mini habits today .
+GladX Hi, nice to know I'm not alone! I totally agree with you. Small changes can have a huge impact, and if the normal approach -- studying as little as possible throughout the semester and cramming before the tests -- were effective, most students would do really great at all tests, which is definitely not the case. A step a day makes the journey seem less intimidating and stressing. I'm actually experiencing no stress at all and enjoying the whole learning process. May I ask you which languages your're studying?
Brian , I loved this one!!! I watch your videos every morning while I get ready for work as I have made it part of my morning ritual to get into the right mindset as I begin my day. This one spoke loudly to me as I think of my place as in the world as a kindergarten teacher, a single mom of eight year old twins and a person with a passion in strength training six days a week. Superhuman powers are something I tap into daily..... thx for sharing
In life, Fear is always our direction finder. As a professional fine artist, I confront fear everyday......it never seems to get easier. I choose to invite Fear in and embrace all that it offers on my personal path to growth. My greatest successes always lie just beyond what i foolishly fear.. As an artist, I'm committed to dancing on my edges and entering my creative flow daily. Time is of little consequence as spirit guides me towards my greatest manifestation of myself.. It's the not knowing that pique our antenna; telling us we're approaching the next precipice....making the leap doesn't seem to become easier but there is great reassurance in knowing that the creative river flows and is Always there awaiting our entry into the zone of bliss and fulfillment of our highest dreams and aspirations. Thank You Brian for All your Wonderful work and shining the light of truth for all us seekers of wisdom. :-)
Why on earth does this video only have several thousand views? I loved it and deeply appreciate the way you convey these ideas, Brian. I have studied Psychology, etc, for sometime and I thoroughly enjoyed this. I subscribed half way through, your teaching qualities are second to none. Much love, Ross.

So doing something 4% more than what you would do every, would that not still follow the 10,000 hour rule. Granted like you said it's not "structured" but that's because people are doing something they love. But what if its something like learning a language? That's not something most people love to do but is necessary for certain jobs. So they would need to have some kind if "structure" to learn sed language right?
Flow being defined as 4% past your current level of skill is inconsistent with Csikszentmihalyi's research and the neuroscience of the phenomenon. Flow is the opposite of willful exersion since it is below conscious awareness. If you are not aware of something, then you are not willing something.
How do you find the patience to read books and grasp the fruit content in each of the books. So as to clearly feed the viewers in a short time the fruit content. Just curious to know.
Hmmm... Well, I LOVE reading books and feel like I'm sitting down having a chat with a brilliant mind. And, it's my job (lol) so I take it seriously. And, all the work I do on the fundamentals (eating, moving, sleeping, meditation, etc.) plus very little technology (no smartphone, no internet surfing, etc.) helps keep my brain sharp! I don't mean to criticize you and at the same time I take the tone of my comment as a challenge for myself- A guy who reads so many book and can give such clear insights and still on RUclips or running some site is not okay. You should be doing something really great if you actually have digested these books. I am recovering addict so no judgement involved but you need to become like what more awesome?
haha! Love it, Nitish. And, I agree. this only works for a very limited number of professions. what if your profession has been outsourced to a 3rd world country and even if you get into flow you can't pay the bills.
james morrison A change in direction is required or you need to refocus your niche or approach. If you’re a carpenter, it’s hard to compete with China and Sweden, but you can make niche, focused products they no one else can. Just spitballing
wtf how are you supposed to challenge up 4%? how about some examples...this is all theory and hypothetical...makes no sense in the real world...totally pointless.
