I always thought that interviewing musicians and other artists is kinda pointless. They speak through their art. And art is like a joke, it loses it's point once you have to explain it.
+1 2 I'm an artist and he's completely right. Art does lose it's meaning when you have to explain it. It's meaning is meant to be subjective. The artist has their own personal meaning to it and those who view it have their individual ideas.
+1 2 exactly. you do an interview to promote. if you can't explain your art, then there isn't a conscious thought behind it. art is more akin to science, and a joke is like a magic trick. when you explain the trick, then it loses something because its based on illusion. science and art are not illusion, so explaining them, only highlights it's depth
losgryfog I agree with you to a degree. But a lot of artists want people to have their own ideas from their piece and not be corrupted from their own inspirations.
Alex Wayne Art is subjective, and art isnt subjective. Art is subjective to the creator, and it is subjective to the observer. And the sum of this is objective. "Fucking getting it" means, at least to me, that some people see art for what it is, and others want to seem smarter and therefor make something to be something that it is not. In the case of Die Antwoord interview the intervjuer wanted the band to be some kind of tongue-in-cheek band that only snobs like him got. That people who enjoy Die Antwoord for what they are, instead of what they think they are, miss the point of the band. Of course the band has a lot of humor to them. But people who like Die Antwoord get that. To put it into another example: Camp or "guilty pleasures" (a term I fucking hate) is to enjoy something, not because it is great, but because it has flaws. But a person who "fucking get it" wouldnt call it a "guilty pleasure" cuz they knew why through the flaws it becomes great. They do not need to defend it, or rationalize it or whatever. It is what it is, and you like it. Its difficult to explain this. I tried to, but to "fucking get it" is not on a cerebral level. This is not science or politics. Its art. It goes beyond logic. But I tried.
For those who don't understand Norwegian. The reporters in this video are incredibly patronizing and judging of the group they are interviewing. They say that this is either "incredibly bad music" or just a satirical parody group pushed to the extreme. They describe their music as "so bad it's good" and say the only people that enjoy their music are hipsters that like them ironically. Then they try to frame themselves as pragmatic during the interview but the group clearly saw through their shit. I don't even like Die Antwoord, but for fuck's sake, have some integrity and do your reporting job properly: report, and leave your Jantelov bullshit bias at home.
Thanks. I stumbled upon this group after reading an article about the new movie Suicide Squad...anyway, there apparently is no word in the Norwegian language for White Trash, because I did hear that come out in plain English. When they were on Letterman, the crowd laughed when the song was over, clearly not their intent to be humorous, but maybe I'm wrong.
Just some information to hopefully help your perspective: this interview is over 2 years old and it was before they starred in Chappie or had any mainstream recognition. People didn't take their music seriously then. Now that they're a little more established, they don't get criticized as harshly (at least it doesn't seem like it).
I'm from a small fishing community on the east coast of Canada and i have been listening to die antwoord since 2012, if i heard of them back then they must have had some mainstream recognition already. cause we don't hear shit around here lol
How is any of this fresh? All they do is copying already existing trends like the trashy hiphop gangster, the freaky björk girl, their music is just a tepid rehash of already cheap charts pop/hiphop stuff. Still have a hard time taking his rap serious, this has to be a bad joke.
Luke Lenard if you don't get it by now, you never will. stick to your hippy music or whatever you listen to because this is a acquired taste kinda like Roquefort cheese or deep fried cockroaches !!!!!!!!!!!!!! taste like lobster !lol
Landshark! What are you talking? THIS is freaking hippy music, he cant rap, she cant rap or sing they look like trash, their style is a 1:1 copy of the new kids turbo stuff. I think I did understand the situation but you seem to be very confused sir.
Mainstream is never fresh. just look at Pitbull, and check how many things were copied from Kusturica and No Smoking Orchestra. Still if you look at the traditional folk music, it was copied way too many times and it is still being copied and modified.
That last part was pure gold. On the question 'Do you consider yourself a conceptual art group' Ninja: "Do you consider yourself an intelligent person?" Reporter: "Yes" Ninja: "What do you think?" Ha ha ha! Boom. love you guys.
First, I love the music, second, I love their honesty, third, I love that they represent themselves as they are, even though it clearly pisses a lot of people off, or means they get a lot of judgement thrown their way. Fourth, and probably most important, is that they are South African patriots and if you know even a little bit about the country, you should respect how hard core that country can be.. so yeah, I love those guys.
Ninja - "Do you consider yourself to be an intelligent person?" Interviewer - "Yes." Ninja - "What do YOU think?" Interviewer - no answer. I respect these guys so much and I love how calm they stayed even though the interviewer was obviously being really patronising. They come out as seeming really smart and switched on, and it makes me admire them even more!
"I don't understand what I am listening to and I don't like it, so therefore these are bad people and they are doing bad things." -This report in a nutshell
Thank you! Most people do not understand the language they mostly sing in yet everyone likes them so much. If only all these people really knew what they are actually singing about then maybe they will change their opinions
@@celestebosch4684/videos it was sarcasm to make a point. that it looks bad because we only understand the english, etc. they sing in english 99% of the time. they asked them questions in english and cut the questions out, highly edited... also, like people are not supposed to get upset ever about anything.
In Yolandi's defense she seemed genuinely irritated that she didn't understand what the word conceptual meant and no one was trying to explain it to her. For all she knew it was derogatory or a complete mis-categorization. I think Ninja felt the same way but decided to fight back rather than show perceived weakness by asking for a definition.
It's ironic that the interviewer suggests they are trashy, yet look how calm they remain even though he's blatantly provoking them. That guy should be reporting on Wallstreet, not avant-garde artists like these. So the answer is: No, the interviewer didn't get it. Completely unprofessional.
You are an idiot. They are not an avant garde artist, they are rappers. Thats it, thats what they said themselves. All you fan boys try to make them something they are not.
Their music is not just for kids. I'm happy he said: "we make music for kids and people who get it".....I'm 45 and discovered Die Antwoord only a few months ago.....I love them!!!!!
+Mud Hut Exactly what I was about to write. I never liked techno or house or anything like that, but I like Die Antwoord. Not because of their musicality but their lyrics and presentation is amazing. This is satire on a very high level, they're serious about the music but its also satire and humor. Their personas are defiantly a part of their performance.
+Mud Hut they are pretty comited to the act to get that many shitty tattos. even the most seirus actors would not get that many tattos to get into charicter
+Mud Hut The lyrics may be jokes, but the Zef culture in South Africa is very real. It's a niche group that no one, but people who grew up with it understand.
That was one of the most refreshing interviews I've ever seen. I like Die Antwoort more because of seeing it. They just dont take any shit, not even the insinuation of it.
Nah his eyes look the same like those of my Ex-husband who had the same Crowley-inflicted, satanist, narcissist, god-complex psychosis as him. He raped and abused me for 5 years. In the end, he committed suicide. I used to love Die Antwoord, but when I heard about that scandal with that girl Zheani (which I didn't believe at first) and read his messages to her, I got an actual panic attack because it all came back. My husband is gone for 6 years now, but this guy is just like him, his words are his, his stare is, too, and it scares the shit out of me.
@@stonedNcreepy I'm sorry for what you're husband did to you. I kinda relate tbh. I hope you are doing better now. But that scandal with that Australian rapper I'm not so sure. Yes he shouldn't have said that stuff but I don't think that other rapper was 100% innocent tbh. Theres 2 sides to every story.
Their music and their style is charismatic and uniquely hilarious. The two singers compliment each other perfectly. Man, they were made for each other.
There's no evidence they've abused children. Children's aid made a surprise visit to their home after those allegations and found no cause for concern whatsoever.
The interview didn't really 'go wrong' they were asked questions that undermined their music so the reactions were understandable that they were not in the best of mood... The stuff that was said in Norwegian went along with that, claiming that people only liked them because they were 'so bad they're good' or because they saw it as a parody on gangsta rap. Which is bullshit because they got a pretty unique sound and that's why people (like I) like them. if you don't respect the people you interview that's obviously gonna affect the outcome of the interview.
Does anyone even understand Afrikaans? The language that they mostly sing in?? It is very easy for people to say that they are not trash and that their music is good, yet most of their fans does not even understand the language.. Come on people... If you really fully understood what this group is actually singing about and doing then you will understand.
@@celestebosch4684 What an absurd premise. You absolutely do not need to understand the language to enjoy the music. This is true for any genre in any language.
@@celestebosch4684 Afrikaans is a conglomeration of Dutch spoken in South Africa. It developed when the Dutch West India Trading company invaded & was the language of the burghers (Boers). A type of pidgin the colonists used to communicate to their servants (slaves)
There’s really not much to get. They’re music is absolute garbage. They rely on their outrageous music videos to keep people’s interest. Honestly couldn’t imagine anyone riding the bus or on a road trip listening to their horrendous music.
Interview questions cannot undermine music ffs, not if it is strong and real enough, maybe they just aren't. anyone who listened to punk in the late 70's and early eighties, let alone all the hiphop since then, knows they are followers, not innovators.
I just found about these guys when chappie came out but I'm a huge fan and prefer these guys to any of the mush mouth copy cat trap rap shit going on on America right now. there music is different and has imagination and a sence of humor and realness, which is what the world needs .
Mostly because it's not the culture you're familiar with perhaps? So it's interesting. I'm not saying Die Antwoord isn't one the most eccentric music duo's they are certainly very original and I adore them too
Hear Hear! I'm a 50 yo white guy from California, and my 13 yo daughter turned me on to Die Antwoord I thought they were very fun and creative and their vids are quite visually arresting----good stuff! This intergenerational sharing me and my daughter have is great! I turn her on to classic rock-type stuff that I "traditionally" am into and she shares newer stuff with me.
Another 50-something California white guy here, with a teen daughter....and we both love Die Antwoord. Like you, we share music across the broad spectrum from classical to swing, to the 50s, 60s, 70's, and on. One minute it's Boston, the next it's Katie Perry, and then it be might Union Underground, Die Antwoord, Audioslave......you name it. If it's good, it's on the menu, and Die Antwoord is simply a lot of fun. The artistic side of their videos is un-freaking-real....LOVE IT!
Austinado Man I wish there were more parents like you, music is one of the major things that set us apart from other species, and to have such a wide spectrum to enjoy as well as an open mind to it all is downright awesome! PS: I see you mentioned Audioslave and wondered if you listen to Tool, and/or Deftones.
For anybody wondering, when this guy says "copy cat trap rap shit going on in America" he really wants to say "Black people stealin' our music". And the other assholes, "Me and my daughter listen to a wide array of music" (that's not made by anything other than white people). Nine times out of ten these guys would rather pick up an album with a white face on it over a "colored" face.
It honestly pissed me off how the reporter called their music "so bad it's good" like no, their music is genuinely good. They make music because they think it's fun, and they're actually pretty cool people. People usually think they're stupid or unintelligent but they're actually really clever.
Journalists are very arrogant people. I saw one website where a guy called Ninja an old loser and he completely trashed the group with disrespect. Ninja was very professional with the way he handled these people.
Most of the comments against them are due to their appearance or are commenting about the way they conduct themselves, frankly I don't give a fuck, their songs are catchy as fuck and I don't even like most rap or hip hop
Khutso XI It is rap. Just because you don't like it because it's different from what you think rap should be like doesn't mean it isn't. That's like saying Jay Z isn't a rapper because he doesn't have the same sound as 2Pac.
Kiddowesth The thing is, artists like this get questions like this all the time. You'd be annoyed if people kept asking you the same questions over and over again. In North America, they 'create' bands, groups and artists based on commercialism. It is easy for people to assume for this reason that they might be doing the same thing. However, they are just being themselves and this is a representation of their lifestyles & whatever they create.
Joaquin Flores yeah? that's why they have no PR to represent them and actually speak for themselves, dismissing false journalists? that's why they made their own label instead of accepting when big ones told them they couldn't make it or didn't make them enough money? ...hmm okay then, i've been sold. things to think about.
Toira TV If they take offense so easily why would they do interviews? They don’t have to since they started their own label. Many other musicians also answer the same questions over and over again but I rarely see others take offense like this. What makes this journalist false?
ninja is actually a pretty smart individual. he clearly understands that the interviewer is trying to discredit them but still answers with straight forward answers. cant really blame him for his style of speech, he just grew up that way
I love this group. I find it hilarious how so many people don't get it. They have never sold out or changed their style to be more mainstream and are totally unique. Also if you know rap then you understand that they are very skilled and are doing something that most rappers these days have forgotten to do: the all important "keeping it real".
theyve changed their style a few times. theyre just playing characters really. its pretty funny and i like them. theyre a good vibe and weird as shit (not a bad thing). but i wouldnt say they 'keep it real' in any way
There is no music group that 100% represents a country. Countries have thousands upon thousands of diverse qualities that cannot be boiled down and channeled through an album or a video made by a rap crew and their artist friends. What Die Antwoord presents is a smattering of flavors influenced by their experiences and lives in South Africa. They also make many social commentaries about their experiences and lives in South Africa. This is not done to be conceptual art, this is done to be humans making music, which happens to be political, artistic, emotional, jarring, and beautiful when done well. Their style style is expensive to them because they're not cooperating under the American social concept of what is expensive. In America we believe that expensive equates perfect hems and crisp white shirts. Middle class America thinks that American Eagle, Abercrombie, and Hollister are rich kid clothes. Upper classes think that Polo, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, and Tommy Hilfiger are expensive clothes. We think that what Die Antwoord presents is thrift store 80's horror but that's because our perception is skewed by our culture. Amen for people like Die Antwoord who are not going to follow fashion trends built to make consumers shop and rather deliver their own form of expensive. If only Americans could learn from this, maybe kids could love themselves and believe they're expensive through self expression not through carbon copy clothing. Whether you agree with the content of the music or their approach, they are people saying something worthwhile and emoting a beautiful frustration with the world in general. This makes them well worth a glance and for those of us who are inspired by it, an extended introspective listen. This is music. Music is an art form. This is not a category of museum art.
You are quite on the point, sir. I think part of the appeal of Antwoord in particular is that they manage to build such strong characters and staying in character, consistently. That just messes with people's heads. It's hard to know if it's "real" or a performance art. And that shifts peoples perspectives on what's real and what's not. Which is ultimately a healthy thing.
American youth have been through their own cultural trends which seems to be excluded in your commentary and breakdown of who's who and what's s in in America. In my day the more ripped- up and ragged the jeans the better.
4ur3n Regardless he could have taken 1 minute and explain to her whet conceptual meant. It was a dumb question on the interviewers part but Ninja shouldn't of progressed without explaining it to Yolandi.
sen yamagishi ye indeed...but you are talking about how normal people should react in a calm and polite manner......ninja is not like that, I am not saying he is an ape, but you see..all of us didn't grow up the same way...he had it a bit hard and he is now become a true person, though he gets upset when he hears smth that sounds stupid...pros and cons...there are times that he is sensitive and takes care of yolandi....there are also times that he becomes a bit upset, but he tries to control it and he soon gets to cool down...we are all different. Also, I never expected him to be a master-interviewee...he is a str8-forward guy, true person, but when being interviewed he gets all annoyed and maybe aggressive. He should have done better, but I don't think he even noticed when he reacted like that :/
Still would of preferred for him to handle it better. With as weird as she acts at times Yolandi's a real nice girl. So it annoyed me that he'd act like that towards her.
to be honest I was annoyed too a bit...I also like Yolandi :) but you know...people. Just think that if they take away our technology then we become animals again...we gonna kill for food, kill ppl that belong elsewhere and rape and who knows what else.....until we reform society. That's because we follow our primitive insticts...imagine that Ninja is a guy who follows his heart/insticts, You can love him for that or hate him. But, ye he needs to behave a bit better sometimes.
Man I love how he handles the interviewer with the"conceptual hip hop" queastion. "do consider yourself an intelligent person?" yes "What do you think?" I think the answer is pretty self evident. They used to make conceptual art rap and probably figured they were being elitist or pretentious. Why not just make good music to enjoy it and if some art or some concept gets in it that is just part of who they are. It's the difference between oil painting and drawing comics. A painting will hang in a museum or a rich persons home. A comic may end up in a trash can or kept on a nightstand, but it has broader appeal/accessibility and is no less artful than the oil painting.
They're still making conceptual art rap don't you think? Their whole act, down to accents, their apparent not understanding what "conceptual art" is, their interviews...everything. The whole thing is art. They are very intelligent people. Check out Max Normal...
I agree. They are making music, and people that don't get that are trying to make them out to be more then that. Like Ninja's crack against hipsters. Hipsters always try to make fucking everything mean something different,a nd blow it out of proportion. Die Antwoord MAKES RAP music. That is it. They aren't some great performance art band like all you hipsters try top make them out of be. It is laughable how some people try to contrive meaning out of basic fucking lyrics lol.
Rhetorical man ah, i see. You can give but you can't take. Way to stamp your feet like a petulant child. Here i thought i was talking to an intelligent person, my mistake. Please, don't let me stop you making a fool of yourself. I insist, please continue talking out your arse.
Love that Ninja says, "we make music for everyone," because I'm a 50-year-old, mom/teacher and I love them! Frankly, I think menopause makes me love them even more because my attitude has become more and more a fuck it all attitude. ;)
So here's the thing - I'm a 58yr old Maori woman from NZ who introduced my kids to rap music and who has listened to it since the era of the 'Sugar Hill Gang' and rappers like 'Grandmaster Flash' and 'D J Kool Herc'. That was back in the '70's before most of 'y'all were even born. Groups like Die Antwood are a breath of God damned fresh air particular since the utter commercialisation of rap music. Having laud witness to what the American music industry has done to this genre with acts like - say 'Drake' to name but a few ... is it any wonder you have die hards like myself turning to fresh upbeat talent like Die Antwood as the alternative to some of the American crap that's being vomited out. Die Antwood - I cant get enough of the bastards. Bring it on !!!
Ninja: *do you consider yourself to be an intelligent person* Ninja: *Just say Yes or No, its not a trick question* Interviewer: *uumm.... Yes* Ninja: *What do u think?* Interviewer: Best part
For anyone who doesn't speak Norwegian just know this is the most sarcastic, assholeish pompous interview I've ever seen anyone sit through in my entire life - No exaggeration. It's obvious from how Ninja responds to it he's an intelligent person. I'd imagine other rappers from America responding far less maturely.
"Deres så dårlig at det bra-musikk".. er det mulig. De tror det er ironi, liksom. Først og fremst er musikken drit bra. Dette er så jævlig flaut. Hvem er denne idioten som intervjuer.
I clicked on this video because I though I'd seen the face of the guy on the thumbnail before, but couldn't quite place him. Then it turns out they're literally the people from Chappie, and by that I mean; apart from the CG robots, these guys weren't even acting. They even used their own stage names and music in the movie. I had no idea, shows how much attention I pay to movie trivia 0o
Yeah the whole plot was based off of "what if these two had a robot" that being said don't think that ninja and yolandi are actually like that, it's all an incredibly intricate performance
+Dr. Time sir you are correct. i had an interview on my favorites list that was these two smart individuals giving a Q&A about anything you asked them. Even i could swear there was NO accent at times. Ninja and Yo-Landi are both great performers, with the ability to bring a imagination into life. They even can speak the part. i only wish the video wasn't deleted off that channel.
I am from Romania, love their muzique and style, because they are non comercial etc like all bands music. They are unique!, DIE ANTWOORD KEEP DOING THE GREAT WORK!
I agree with you. The way Ninja closes with "What do you fink?" was the best way to end it. Because at the end of the interview it should have been clear that they're a rap group, and nothing more. That's what they want to be and that's what they are. Just listen to the music. Whatever creative direction is taken in their music videos is entirely on the producer. The producer is the artist, Die Antwoord is the awesome rap group. Too many people listen to music with their eyes..get me?
Not really because he just asked a simple question to them that wasn’t offensive yet they seemed to take offense to it. Maybe they aren’t interview material. Considering they’re in that line of work, you’d think they’d be more receptive to interviews. Always being “edgy” isn’t attractive. Just answer the damn questions and move along. They act bothered by the interview and they’re public figures.
@@walshy2116 they are too dumb to know what it is that they do? I think they know fine well that they do conceptual art - they just saying the interviewer is dumb for asking
Not satire - drug fueled pseudo-art. You want to believe it's satire because they create "art" that you enjoy. No one wants to believe their favorite artists are borderline idiots. Let's see some solid proof that they're satirical.
ahiddenoddity It always amazes me when people who are passionate enough about something to argue on the internet don't first do a quick search to check whether or not they're right. They have indicated in several interviews that their getup is a persistent performance; people like to quote the interview in which Ninja equates himself to a Clark Kent who doesn't take off his Superman costume. Both Yolandi and Ninja went to art school and have had several other satirical music projects-- most notably Max Normal, a corporate hip hop group which features them rapping in suits and ties. Die Antwoord was just the project that stuck. Again, not sure why you're so intent on speaking out against them, but do yourself a favour and try to fully understand the things you hate before publicly denouncing them. I'll leave you with this thought: why would a musical savant such as Aphex Twin suppourt, perform with, and give distribution rites to a band that clearly does not display substantial musical talent?
Luka Dragutinovic I think one other thing that people don't get is that they are South African. That's their culture, their thing. You can't use stereotypical American/Western values to judge what they are because that's like trying to determine if an apple ticks all the coconut criteria. Partially I guess it's because trash in some places does have a style that is visually similar to theirs. For them - in my limited Western understanding - their style is Zef and it's respectable. I don't know much about Yolandi, but I've seen quite a few interviews with Ninja. He likes random things, he appreciates random and original as a form of art, entertainment, something that pokes at people's minds. He is very good at that, too. In fact I think he is pretty much all the time a little bit in his own world doing his creations, which would by supported by the recurring difficulties actually formulating a crystallised summary of his thoughts. Everything's kind of work in progress in his head.
Luka Dragutinovic Now I don't know if your comment was a good or a bad thing: 1) "You sound like you are hallucinating and none of the things you said made any sense whatsoever." 2) "You sound like a guy I could do mushrooms with, I bet we'd have interesting conversation."
The ending threw me off. He asked the interviewer if he thought he was an intelligent person. But the interviewer couldn't even answer it. And ninjas like "eetz nawt a trick question". Interviewer still couldn't answer. That's gold.
No one wants to be referred as "trash". A professional interviewer should consider that. They were asking for that kind of reply. Also, look at Die Antwoord's content. I think the interviewer knew what they were doing and wanted to show them in the darker of lights.
i think "trash" is a style in norway.....like polka trash? i think he meant style wise they are similar to that whole trash movement in that country.....but i could be wrong
I love them!! What a down-to-earth couple they are and they just tell it exactly as it is with no filters. As for their music, it is unique art. Die Antwoord...please don’t ever change ❤️
That interviewer was idiot. He should learn how to ask better question than being a total dick. Ninja handle it very well though. I respect ninja and yolandi so much.
+Deathbringer99699 came her watching a shit video and actually learned there are decent people alive, well done guys biggest guys I have seen on RUclips
I understand why a load of people would think that they are retarded, hell if you listen to any boertjie talking English, they sound a bit dof. I don't like their music - but I respect the fact that they are taking the piss out of people, and that most people are too daft to understand that THAT IS the point. If you look at most of the lyrics, they are dissing the common white folk (whilst portraying them, apparently blinded by delusions of grandeur.) It is an art - making people mad, making them think. In the interview, Ninja talks about Satanism spawning from Christianity -(which is a bit more of a complex subject, thus sort of proving that he's not as retarded as he's letting on.) technically this isn't wrong. Lucifer was a fallen angel - and without that - we wouldn't have had evil. Also - "No one refers to themselves as trashy." Very true - every person believes they are stylish, every person believes they are classy - we all get it very wrong most of the time - we just don't get scrutinized under the spotlight as much as these guys. In Afrikaans we have a saying: "Die hoogste bome vang die meeste wind." (The highest trees gets the most wind.) Meaning the higher up you are (or more in the public eye you are) the more trouble you will get. Granted, they are looking for it, but still. I think they succeeded at one thing though - making the wheels turn - you know more of what you like, more of what you don't like, more of what you don't want to be (or what you aspire to, your choice) after watching the videos. MPO is that they just want you to think outside the box, and NOT be like everyone else - just be happy as you are. "Fuck that poes in the skinny jean - fok maar jy's trendy." (You in the skinny jeans, dayum you're trendy.) Meaning, that they'd rather wear zef cropped tops than be slaves to fashion... To close off "Do you consider yourself to be an intelligent person? Not a trick question - just yes or no. "Yes." So what do you think?" That's exactly it - it's a matter of opinion - and if they had to concern themselves with all the naysayers - they wouldn't be where they are. Not everyone likes Katy Perry, Eminem, Marilyn Manson or Die Antwoord - it's still your decision - but you can always turn the dial off, or watch a puppy video. They are pushing boundaries just because they can.
You miss, are a hipster. I honestly don't think that you understood the analogy to Satanism that he made cause the point of Satanism was NOT to pull off that retarded good-evil dualism of Christianity but to totally trash it in the first place because Christianity is just some retarded nonsensical shit. If you couldn't even understand that, then it's unlikely you understood anything else he said. They are high level trolls and trolls never push boundaries, they just troll for the sake of it to generate butthurt. They are good for putting the finger into something, but they NEVER ever have changed a fucking thing in the world because deep inside they don't want things to change, they are perfectly fine with their roles as trolls. Killing their own supply would negate their own purpose of existence. That's the difference to real progressive people who DO change the world, who DO push boundaries. To be a progressive person you first need to know in which direction you want change to happen. That's something "Die Antwoord" has, ironically, no answer for, which is also perfectly in tune with postmodern ironical hipsterism and that's also the reason they are even that famous in the first place because they are not opposing anything, they fall in the line and function as a valve (letting off steam to prevent everything to blow up, you know) because they are just, you guessed it, trolls who cash in money with their trolling.
Nadia Nolan Acknowledging that they are trolls undermines your statement that they are progressive (= push boundaries). Progressive people may troll occasionally to get their point across, but they don't reside in trolling alone. Big difference.
***** He is a real person who is in character. I can't explain this but there is a comment thread further down that does. Or just look it up, it is not hard to find.
I like Die Antwoord more because I like Ninja and Yolandi than because I like the music. They have like 5-10 songs I REALLY like and the rest are either meh or lame, but Yolandi and Ninja as people, all the way, love em both. Real as they come.
The ending was so spot on! "Do you consider yourself to be a piece of conceptual art?" That's a stupid question because art is in the eye of the beholder.
man im an artist my self. this is the most dumbest yet most outstandingly brilliant form I have yet to understand right now just heard you guys not even 10 minutes ago. my first was I fink you freeky...... that shit was ..... I seriously have no words right now but im trying to explain how it made me feel bare with me. I don't think the songs would make nearly any sense without the music videos. both the audio and the video breaks down and shatter every bit of conventional ways of music that anyone has grown up with. The chaotic waves you guys put out is soothed by some miraculous symmetry , the visions it brings forth in ones mind with the videos is quite disturbing and im sorry I don't know the girls name yet but she and I do mean this with the best compliments she freaks me out I adore creepy scary things but her voice and the way she does her character I would never and I mean never come up with in my most craziest nightmares. im sorry if that offended but it truly is a compliment you are out of this world scary with your costumes it is just literally breath taking. Marilyn manson has nothing on you girl. so I guess what im saying is the world is just not ready yet for this groups brilliance. btw the last bit of the comment the guy said about the art " what do you think" was a paradox people expect answers for their questions when they are not ready for what you bring in other words people are scared of what they do not know or understand. keep at it you just got another fan. sorry for the long comment
commenter78 OMg I agree I'm from Perth and the video was titled in English and then I tapped on it and was like wtf r they saying I could only understand yolandi and ninja
+Pseudo Nym Yeah and the dumb ass doesn't know how to answer such a simple question. People are idiots these days. It's like ... Do you drink water? This must be a trick question.
I didn't like Bjork at first listen. I didn't like Death Grips at first listen. I didn't like Die Antwoord at first listen. They all pushed me into unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory audibly and visually, which strangely had me coming back to them until I realized they were making the very music/art that my soul was made for.
you cant judge anybody, but Die Antwoord makes me think a lot about subjectivity and all the people they connect with. They seem to hustle hard and have integrity.
+584 542 hahahaha. NOT. fucken bullshit just bc i didn't like this interview doesn't mean I don't like Die Antwoord. I can't take offense in ur reply when I've never seen even one episode and never would watch that bullshit. Fucken mainstream media shows. But something tells me you have, being that u tried to use that show "against me" ha the joke is on you. This reply is also a waste my time but the ends justify the means haha rofl!
+Roger “Sandstorm” Lennes No thoughts on die antwood being too immature to answer a question without getting personal. Giving shitty answers to shitty questions makes you as dumb as the person asking in my honest opinion!!
+okidot it wasn't die antwoord it was just ninja. he got all pissed off (and reasonably so) but instead of approaching the question properly he just was a bitch to yolandi because she didnt understand, and then she was upset. Doesn't make them dumb, just emotional.
+Maxim Chepelev You're right, but it alsu sux when no one gets it.
+1 2
exactly. you do an interview to promote.
if you can't explain your art, then there isn't a conscious thought behind it.
art is more akin to science, and a joke is like a magic trick.
when you explain the trick, then it loses something because its based on illusion.
science and art are not illusion, so explaining them, only highlights it's depth
1 2 Wow. I think that cactus is a bit too far up your ass.
losgryfog I agree with you to a degree. But a lot of artists want people to have their own ideas from their piece and not be corrupted from their own inspirations.
"Some people think too much, other peoplet fucking get it."
its the thing
coffin rehersal True that ;-)
Dude... I scrolling the comments and write while I was reading it he was saying it... MINDFUCKED
Andy Ace He said "other people like fucking get it."
+01hondascott your on youtube contradicting your self guy
die antwoord is a breath of fresh air in a world of stagnant mainstream music .
hahha someone actually gets it ..
"Some people think too much, and some people just get it."
exactly.
The sun is very bright and then sometimes it's not.
That last part was pure gold.
On the question 'Do you consider yourself a conceptual art group'
Ninja: "Do you consider yourself an intelligent person?"
Reporter: "Yes"
Ninja: "What do you think?"
Ha ha ha!
Boom.
love you guys.
+AJ Pickett (The Mighty Gluestick)
What is there to LOVE? Just asking (not trying to start an argument).
@treid10018912356789
Read "Born a Crime" by Trevor Noah.
Ninja - "Do you consider yourself to be an intelligent person?"
Interviewer - "Yes."
Ninja - "What do YOU think?"
Interviewer - no answer.
I respect these guys so much and I love how calm they stayed even though the interviewer was obviously being really patronising. They come out as seeming really smart and switched on, and it makes me admire them even more!
I love them
❤️
"I don't understand what I am listening to and I don't like it, so therefore these are bad people and they are doing bad things."
-This report in a nutshell
I think people are trying to piss them off just because they seem unintelligent, but they clearly aren't stupid.
I don't know if they're stupid or not but at least they are honest.
Ninja obviously understood which is why he responded "what do u think". Yolandi evidently understood but continued to stay in character.
I dont think its a weakness to ask this type of question i think its just to inform ourself
They are trash shit
yea the interviewer was unfair but they committed a hate crime on film sooooo
Brittany Boyer I’m curious when and are there sources?
They stay calm because they're too fekkin dumb to know when they're being provoked..
Their music is not just for kids. I'm happy he said: "we make music for kids and people who get it".....I'm 45 and discovered Die Antwoord only a few months ago.....I love them!!!!!
People don't realise it's all an act
+Mud Hut Exactly what I was about to write. I never liked techno or house or anything like that, but I like Die Antwoord. Not because of their musicality but their lyrics and presentation is amazing. This is satire on a very high level, they're serious about the music but its also satire and humor. Their personas are defiantly a part of their performance.
+Alexander Styrlander Yeah, its just that the satire is on such a high level.... -_-
+Mud Hut they are pretty comited to the act to get that many shitty tattos.
even the most seirus actors would not get that many tattos to get into charicter
A quick google search will reveal all
+Mud Hut The lyrics may be jokes, but the Zef culture in South Africa is very real. It's a niche group that no one, but people who grew up with it understand.
That was one of the most refreshing interviews I've ever seen. I like Die Antwoort more because of seeing it. They just dont take any shit, not even the insinuation of it.
+Liam W they are an act . but hey, entertainment is entertainment i guess
Yeah they actually live like that with a daughter also. She's in several videos.
Ninja's eyes look like he's seen some crazy shit.
Yohan P lmao
more like he took some really crazy shit
He is crazy shit!
WHY THE HECK DO YOU PUT THE TITLE IN ENGLISH
to get more views maybe ? fuck the duplicity !
Ninja's response is in English. What do you prefer ?
Kathleen Marie Hmmm... maybe you to kiss my ass ? Let me think, and I give you a call when I make a decision.
womp womp
The interview is conducted in English.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
They were great in Chappie to be honest.
Levi Johnson I loved it. Everyone has their opinion. I enjoyed the humour and their characters.
Great movie. Same with District 9 made by same crew in South Africa.
I like Chappie but I don't like Die Antwoord
In my top 5 for sure
No they didn't 😂☠️
Die is truly a group of artists. Their minds are not like others. So awesome.
Yeah, also nice child abusers tho
Degenerates like you.
There's no evidence they've abused children. Children's aid made a surprise visit to their home after those allegations and found no cause for concern whatsoever.
These two are ahead of their time. If you can't see that it is because you are stuck in the past
***** 2090's maybe homeslice
haha... that could be yes!..
Poor Yolandi.
Austinado
Man I wish there were more parents like you, music is one of the major things that set us apart from other species, and to have such a wide spectrum to enjoy as well as an open mind to it all is downright awesome!
I think they are pure and honest. I'm an old lady and I get their message.
It honestly pissed me off how the reporter called their music "so bad it's good" like no, their music is genuinely good. They make music because they think it's fun, and they're actually pretty cool people. People usually think they're stupid or unintelligent but they're actually really clever.
You Sam, are a legend. And you are clearly very intelligent too. I thumbs this up incredibly :)
no, their music is so bad that its terrible.
I'm not drunk
But everyone that enjoys this crap "music" must be
Journalists are very arrogant people.
Matteas this isn't rap. Don't disrespect the genre of rap/hip-hop by putting these crack heads in the same league as Ana's and Jay Z
Khutso XI lmao didn't mean to trigger any people. Whether you like them or not they clearly fit in the rave/rap genre, sorry.
Khutso XI It is rap. Just because you don't like it because it's different from what you think rap should be like doesn't mean it isn't. That's like saying Jay Z isn't a rapper because he doesn't have the same sound as 2Pac.
Khutso XI Forreal his comment made me cringe so bad!!
I became a fan after I saw a music video of her rapping while taking a 💩 on a golden toilet. It don’t get much more gangsta than that
Michelangelo was absolutely famous in his lifetime, people literally called him “the divine one”. 😂
I was actually a bit disappointed to see this interview. I thought they were more down to earth and not so high on themselves.
Toira TV you've been sold
Joaquin Flores yeah? that's why they have no PR to represent them and actually speak for themselves, dismissing false journalists? that's why they made their own label instead of accepting when big ones told them they couldn't make it or didn't make them enough money? ...hmm okay then, i've been sold. things to think about.
Toira TV If they take offense so easily why would they do interviews? They don’t have to since they started their own label. Many other musicians also answer the same questions over and over again but I rarely see others take offense like this. What makes this journalist false?
Kiddowesth yeah, other musicians however have to answer different questions, such as "what's it like to be so popular and successful"
I always like these guys, but now i honestly respect them for being them
You Norwegians seem to get in a lot of trouble with musical artists...
their south african
Read the description of the video to get the meaning of the comment.
Tom fair enough
weird but true. why though?
+Divorceja Scandinavians in general are kind of awkward.
Call me hipster if you want, but this Die Antwoord is dope af.
Chris cool fok yu
Omg I agree they r dope and I'm 12 and I love them
Chris cool hipster
@Jan Pierewiet Their daughter is twelve and she listens to their music.
How wh- NIGGA! THE FUCK ARE YOU SAYING
ninja is actually a pretty smart individual. he clearly understands that the interviewer is trying to discredit them but still answers with straight forward answers. cant really blame him for his style of speech, he just grew up that way
Ninja only knows one word...
I love this group. I find it hilarious how so many people don't get it. They have never sold out or changed their style to be more mainstream and are totally unique. Also if you know rap then you understand that they are very skilled and are doing something that most rappers these days have forgotten to do: the all important "keeping it real".
no
Suit yourself
theyve changed their style a few times.
theyre just playing characters really. its pretty funny and i like them. theyre a good vibe and weird as shit (not a bad thing). but i wouldnt say they 'keep it real' in any way
Yeah, Fatty Boom Boom teared the industry a new asshole
So many people don't get it? Everyone and their mother are into these two. Except for me, of course. I "get it" but it's just not my thing.
So glad they told the interviewer. He made himself look silly. Love this group. Just discovered them and I’m a 47 year old fan. From northern England.
Just found them a few months ago myself, 46 from the south coast
53 and on
There is no music group that 100% represents a country.
Operating*
-not cooperating.
I don't think i like the way Ninja was speaking to Yolandi.
he was a bit upset that's all
4ur3n Regardless he could have taken 1 minute and explain to her whet conceptual meant.
Die Antwoord interview gone wrong, gone sexual, hood interviews, social experiment gone zef, most shocking interview 2010
I don't know his carer/sister seems like a really nice person and he doesn't seem to appreciate her
+fraaazzz1 What? Do you mean Yolandi?
Yolandi's his gf/wife, they have 2 kids I think
Looks like everyone dosen´t watch h3h3
what reference is that?
Ninja: *sigh* "we're not scum"
Man I love how he handles the interviewer with the"conceptual hip hop" queastion.
"do consider yourself an intelligent person?"
yes
"What do you think?"
I think the answer is pretty self evident.
Check out Max Normal...
try not to categorize stuff
Sonja Joy I agree, and I think their answers are also part of their concept, but it is a thin line here between stupidity and intelligent people.
eminabbe I hear ya. Agreed
They................are real?
+Alejandro Medina you also watched that movie? haha
+Lukas Holtum Chappie :D
+Alejandro Medina I see you too saw Chappie? They must be amazing to see live in concert LOL.
Lol yeah. Something about that girl strongly weirds me out.
I thought the same thing.
I dont get all the hate... theyre really wonderful people this is just an odd interview
yeah, i don't understand it either. if they were African american, people be like, ''oh a rap group ahh i get it.'' its not that hard to understand.
Rhetorical man u just described almost every band ever. well done
Rhetorical man Exactly. It was a very retarded thing for you to say. I'm glad you can understand that now.
Rhetorical man ah, i see. You can give but you can't take.
Way to stamp your feet like a petulant child.
Here i thought i was talking to an intelligent person, my mistake.
Please, don't let me stop you making a fool of yourself. I insist, please continue talking out your arse.
Rhetorical man You should change your name to 'Rhetorical Boy' because you clearly don't behave like a man.
Love that Ninja says, "we make music for everyone," because I'm a 50-year-old, mom/teacher and I love them! Frankly, I think menopause makes me love them even more because my attitude has become more and more a fuck it all attitude. ;)
people really bashing them? they're getting asked meaningless questions and respond appropriately, they're tired of it
I agree
Proof that there is no direct correlation between weird and cool.
I would be honored to meet these two. honestly there minds together must be amazing to listen to.
Ninja: *do you consider yourself to be an intelligent person*
Ninja: *Just say Yes or No, its not a trick question*
Interviewer: *uumm.... Yes*
Ninja: *What do u think?*
Interviewer:
Best part
I love that part!!!!
r o A sT e. D
what a fucking great response to that line of questioning!
I LOVE them! I wasn't sure about them at first but now I show everyone their videos.
Zeno Kazuya enig lol for noe kødd
Norwegians and their weird ass robot accent wtf
"Deres så dårlig at det bra-musikk".. er det mulig. De tror det er ironi, liksom. Først og fremst er musikken drit bra. Dette er så jævlig flaut. Hvem er denne idioten som intervjuer.
Ninja is een dom poes
I don't get why people expect anything else from journalists, lol
its been decades since it was a proper honorable profession
there's no such thing as bad publicity, they are genius
I clicked on this video because I though I'd seen the face of the guy on the thumbnail before, but couldn't quite place him. Then it turns out they're literally the people from Chappie, and by that I mean; apart from the CG robots, these guys weren't even acting. They even used their own stage names and music in the movie. I had no idea, shows how much attention I pay to movie trivia 0o
Yeah the whole plot was based off of "what if these two had a robot" that being said don't think that ninja and yolandi are actually like that, it's all an incredibly intricate performance
+Dr. Time
sir you are correct. i had an interview on my favorites list that was these two smart individuals giving a Q&A about anything you asked them. Even i could swear there was NO accent at times. Ninja and Yo-Landi are both great performers, with the ability to bring a imagination into life. They even can speak the part. i only wish the video wasn't deleted off that channel.
+DahBjorn because you a fuckin idiot
+ChaosTVAfrica you saying DahBjorn is an idiot for having an opinion. You my china, are the fuckin idiot, doos.
+WillBurgify there is no opinion in the okes comment, so you are the doos
I totally get them, I think they are brilliant and know exactly how to draw a crowd in total legends
I am from Romania, love their muzique and style, because they are non comercial etc like all bands music. They are unique!, DIE ANTWOORD KEEP DOING THE GREAT WORK!
Nah Ninja's right. They're a rap group. People need to stop over-analysing shit and just fucking enjoy it.
I hope people realize that their whole genre is pure satire and parody... That's why I love it
I'm from Finland and I like their music and style! Its unique, It's crazy and beautiful same time. got to love It 💓
That ending, "what do you think?" was really intelligent, actually.
I think it is conceptual art - why not ?
Not really because he just asked a simple question to them that wasn’t offensive yet they seemed to take offense to it. Maybe they aren’t interview material. Considering they’re in that line of work, you’d think they’d be more receptive to interviews. Always being “edgy” isn’t attractive. Just answer the damn questions and move along. They act bothered by the interview and they’re public figures.
@@pixiegem I think they’re too dumb to know what it is hence the attitudes.
@@walshy2116 they are too dumb to know what it is that they do? I think they know fine well that they do conceptual art - they just saying the interviewer is dumb for asking
Guys, they're a satirical project. Keep calm and use Google.
Klikkitse Hit me up the next time you do mushrooms.
Luka Dragutinovic Now I don't know if your comment was a good or a bad thing:
1) "You sound like you are hallucinating and none of the things you said made any sense whatsoever."
2) "You sound like a guy I could do mushrooms with, I bet we'd have interesting conversation."
The ending threw me off. He asked the interviewer if he thought he was an intelligent person. But the interviewer couldn't even answer it.
And ninjas like "eetz nawt a trick question".
Interviewer still couldn't answer. That's gold.
have only been aware of these two for four months or so... I love them .
41. American. and LOVING these 2 and their awesome music! I would have them over for a cookout and hangout
They're not conceptual, they're next level. This is the stuff your grandchildren will be listening to. No joke.
What? I don't have grandchildren.
@@AviViljoen that certainly makes it tougher.
I love them!! What a down-to-earth couple they are and they just tell it exactly as it is with no filters. As for their music, it is unique art. Die Antwoord...please don’t ever change ❤️
Yo what the fuck? I just thought these 2 were mommy and daddy from chappie
malti bon joy joy yes
Gabbergui Yes? They are Die Antwoord first and then they are in that movie. They aren't just mommy & daddy from Chappie.
malti bon joy joy it brought me in schock
+malti bon joy joy They ar VERY VERY famous, long long before Chappie, Their Music is so different and Awesome!
i had no idea. i loved them in chappie
"All up in the interweb."
So where is the "gone wrong" part?
Where Ninja says the interview is over because of the condescending questions.
That interviewer was idiot. He should learn how to ask better question than being a total dick.
Ninja handle it very well though.
I respect ninja and yolandi so much.
I find myself looking them up lately.
They are so captivating.
"we made music for kids" .... *facepalm*
+Deathbringer99699 shut the fuck up hes obviously not talking about 5 year olds

+David D here*
I understand why a load of people would think that they are retarded, hell if you listen to any boertjie talking English, they sound a bit dof. "Yes." So what do you think?"
That's exactly it - it's a matter of opinion - and if they had to concern themselves with all the naysayers - they wouldn't be where they are.
I never said they weren't trolls. And call me what you want, you clearly know what I'm about... :)
Nadia Nolan
Acknowledging that they are trolls undermines your statement that they are progressive (= push boundaries). Progressive people may troll occasionally to get their point across, but they don't reside in trolling alone. Big difference.
*facepalm*
Nadia Nolan
As I said, hipster, incapable of profound analysis hiding behind a wall of irony and smugness. Come back when you are ready.
"People who have aged and are still like ON."
Dude I love their music!!!!
i like this guys. its not trush it good to be different :]
***** maybe you're right nothing in this world is true so its better to believe what we see
***** You do know this guy is not actually a real person he is a character.....................................Gullable much?
Marianna Angel well said
***** He is a real person who is in character. I can't explain this but there is a comment thread further down that does. Or just look it up, it is not hard to find.
***** I know what you are saying and it's true. I was just explaining in reference to the other guys comment.
I like Die Antwoord more because I like Ninja and Yolandi than because I like the music. They have like 5-10 songs I REALLY like and the rest are either meh or lame, but Yolandi and Ninja as people, all the way, love em both. Real as they come.
4:09 yolandi is tweaking hard. Know this feeling all too well. Giving me flashbacks haha
As a South African living in London, you guys are brilliant, exceptional and a perfect acid trip...more...more...fcukn more...
Mad respect to them both, I'm still ON!
Ninja: "We make music for kids"
Me: "someone call the investigator"
trees are green
violets are purple
your title is english
your video should be too
commenter78 OMg I agree I'm from Perth and the video was titled in English and then I tapped on it and was like wtf r they saying I could only understand yolandi and ninja
agree!!
and u should make that poem rhyme
commenter78 That poem sucks! Doesn't even rhyme!
Lol I totally agree with everything said in your poem
"Do you consider yourself an intelligent person? It's a straightforward question."
LOL
+Pseudo Nym Yeah and the dumb ass doesn't know how to answer such a simple question. People are idiots these days.
It's like ... Do you drink water? This must be a trick question.
" We are very sophisticated people ". LOL 😂 listening to their way of using language
When the reporter talked, i thought my headset was broken
How can you not like how weird and down to earth these guys are?
They are horrible people
This will not age well
^ I lol'd.
I was waiting for this 😂
I didn't like Bjork at first listen. I didn't like Death Grips at first listen. I didn't like Die Antwoord at first listen. They all pushed me into unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory audibly and visually, which strangely had me coming back to them until I realized they were making the very music/art that my soul was made for.
What a wank
Rory Griffin hahahahaha, i got a good chuckle out of that
Rory Griffin HAHAHAHA
Hey, look, it's the cool kids.
you cant judge anybody, but Die Antwoord makes me think a lot about subjectivity and all the people they connect with. They seem to hustle hard and have integrity.
The whole video comes down to the last 20 seconds. Ninja seems quite intelligent
This is 6 minutes and 4 seconds of my life I want back!....
+lisa karson me too
Me too.
"Some people think too much, some people just get it"
True that
They are a real talent. Great work!
I LOVE DIE ANTWOORD every one of their "GANGSTA RAPS" are amazing 🤣🤣
Last one was a Good answer, I have to say...
As a norwegian, and a big fan of Die Antwoord, i weep for this reporters skills as a journalist..
Kitty Killjoy I do believe dumb is subjective. I think they are both morons.
for dude like ninja, he is really chill in this interview
Love their brutal honesty
I don't see where interview gone wrong.
ahhhh you dont understand much
arseniy It didn't went wrong, it was excellent :)
