Their first album, "Ring, Ring" was not originally released in the USA. Atlantic Records picked them up for their second album, "Waterloo" in the USA, and the singles that came off of it, and continued to release their albums and singles in the USA. Playboy Records actually released several songs from their first album in the USA, but did not release the album. For the Playboy releases, they were not listed as ABBA, but were instead listed as Bjorn & Benny, with Agnetha & Anni-Frid.
From around 2013 to about 2016 I was a regular on what is called The Rush Forum with many Rush fans. It was fun for a while and there was one guy on there that was a huge ABBA fan and we just didn't get it. He was a big fan of Hold Your Fire also lol...
What a weird request!!! I love early ABBA, but the best is waiting for you... The Visitors (1981) is a MASTERPIECE, incredible album, also The Album from 1976 is incredible too, hope you check those in the future!
Both 'The Album"/"The Visitors" are close to a more intense sophisticated air , yet 'the 2nd one was also darker and more mature. Both (imo) are also the greatest samples of their best lyric potentials.'Btw 'The Album"'s songwriting proccess started in '76(i.e. "Thank U for the Music" melody was exposed in a Xmas '76 TV Greeting with the guys while playing it untitled), recorded in '77 and released late '77 and in other countries early '78.
If you do decide to go down the ABBA rabbit-hole a bit more, two songs I highly recommend are "Knowing Me, Knowing You" (and the official video), and "The Name of the Game" (and the official video), the latter being a very interesting musical arrangement.
Think this earlier stuff was pretty generic before they found their sound which you can begin to hear in the Album ABBA with mega hits Mama Mia and SOS. I also like the more 70's sounding ballad "I've been waiting for you" as well as the vocals from Agnetha are great, Hey Hey Helen is another good track and Bangabommerang is a lot of fun. Special mention goes to "So Long" For the "Made in Sweden" video performance.
Let's not underestimate 'Mamma Mia"'s great instrumentation and bass no matter if it's a seemingly jolly catchy pop tune. It's a masterpiece in construction terms.
@@Muckylittleme Absolutely. Not that easy to write a good melody that could shine out and catch people's attention globally and also manage to survive time and finally become a classic. An Abba song is fulfilled with hooks. Some of today's acts could make even 3 if not more new songs by using samples from one and only Abba song.
ABBA on drugs… “I’m A Marionette” (1978) this song is bonkers, it mixes show tune with progressive rock and disco??? The song has a one minute guitar solo right in the middle dividing the song in two parts for some reason. This song was covered by Ghost with drums and production by Dave Grohl. “The Day Before You Came” (1982) is a ABBA song with NO CHORUS, it tell one story from beginning to end with no conclusion, no one has a conclusive answer to what happened to the narrator at the end, did her live got better or worse, did she died or was she dead all along. This song was voted #6 best pop song in history by NME and #3 best ABBA song ever, and I’m still not sure about any of that. “Eagle” (1978) is a progressive rock song with some psychedelic and synth pop elements, it’s just a good song to listen and relax. ✌️
ABBA's discography was all on drugs, cause… they recorded instrumental, waltz, folk, pop, rock, prog, disco, synthpop, EDM, funk, reggae, Celtic, ballads, opera, country, lullabies, novelties, and show tunes songs. They recorded different language versions of their own songs, played songs live that they never released, used live versions of songs in studio albums, released some songs as part of compilation albums, and also reused melodies of previously released songs in new releases. ABBA’s discography made very little sense. So... definitely on drugs. 😂
My first ABBA album was 1976's Arrival (4th studio) and is still my favorite, this older stuff is kind of torturous but apparently someone enjoys it enough to pay, or is it a prank?😂✌
@JustinPanariello - So that means you'd switched to a new camera after moving into your home? I remember your basses being the right way 'round in your older videos 🙂 By the way, which string brand and what gauges do you prefer, please?
@ i honestly hate strings lol. I change them is little as possible. Among the reasons why i prefer flatwounds. I use Fender flatwounds. I dont know if they are 100s or 105s. Probably 100.
@@robshaw2639 no real vocal training. I took one lesson from Mark Baxter probably in 2009. That was it. @ No worries, but the Greatest Hits album is legendary, and the first few were these I think. If you are asked to do Nina Pretty Ballerina, it would be uncannily similar 😂 I’m really glad of any ABBA to be honest. Let’s see how you fare with it 🙂
Please listen to their later stuff, try, The name of the game, very complex song, or The winner takes it all or The day before you came, then judge. If you still dont appreciate then they are just not for you, thats ok, i probably dont like what you listen to but that dont mean its crap just that i cant relate to it, but please dont rate ABBA on what youve been listening too, im a massive ABBA fan and even i dont listen to that
Yeah, this would be pretty far down on my list of ABBA songs I’d play for someone if I wanted them to like the band. They have catalogs of music far better than this one…
I'm still at this video's intro; I'd loved ABBA a lot since the late 70's but this song's title alone doesn't ring even the smallest bell with me! 😅 *Edit:* Ah yes, I now do recognise this song 😊
@ I was deep into ABBA’s discography after getting bored w/ what I heard on the radio bored me (I’ve heard these same songs for decades!!). I started ‘reverting’ back to the music I loved as a kid, including ABBA, the Beatles & the Eagles. I have all ABBA’s albums on CD, their live concert blue rays, I even own several of Agntha’s solo work from before she joined the band…I don’t especially care for their earlier work, but by Arrival, they’d really grown into their sound. Then I found Haley Reinhart & lucked into many opportunities, and haven’t really looked back since 🤓
@@mightyV444 Btw that was also part of the tracklist in their iconic '70s / 1976 'Greatest Hits" album(wooden bench photo shot) which also ended being the 2nd UK best selling album of the whole decade after 'Simon/Garfankel's "Bridge over troubled water".
Ironic that this song isn't itself very danceable... Also ironic that, after you had finished, you went back and repeated much of it to explain the timing, chords, and key changes.
@@robshaw2639 ive always owned hatchbacks (Fit, CRV, Forester/Outback, Scions etc). Now i have a truck tho. I did a gear video in 2017 i think on the channel. That was a CRV.
Yes I agree, they are not typical ABBA songs and indicative of their earlier sound which was pretty typical 70's when they were finding their way. I don't think you can say ABBA were ABBA until the album "ABBA" which has some songs that you would instantly recognise as that classic ABBA sound. I have a soft spot for one or two of the older songs such as Ring Ring and Honey Honey even though they are pretty simplistic pop songs, they were still fun and watching ABBA perform them makes them twice as good.
At 64, I still can't decide which one is hotter 😊😊😊😊

Surprisingly, a lot of us rockers like Abba, but this early stuff is pretty rough, I'd definitely go with their later stuff
Why was dancing queen not suggested for him to react to? That’s pretty much their signature song

Each to their own, but with such a rich legacy of songs, if I was introducing ABBA to someone unfamiliar with their music I wouldn't pick this one.

Sounds like the Beach Boys meets Alvin & the Chipmunks meets the elevator.
Abba has the typical European schlager vibe in this song. Most of their music is this style. When they picked up on Disco, it got better.
