- According to S.T. Joshi, it is "probably Lovecraft's best humorous story". The tale was undoubtedly inspired by the lighthearted jokes made by Lovecraft's acquaintances in the amateur journalism association, who humorously claimed that he was born two centuries too late. Largely based on James Boswell's biography of the titular scholar, "The Life of Samuel Johnson", this story, written in 18th-century English, is a humorous narrative told by Littlewit, a 228-year-old poet (Lovecraft being 200 years younger at the time).
Most of the anecdotes, enriched with fictional elements and the narrator's involvement, are directly taken from "The Life of Samuel Johnson". Although it is uncertain, the text may have been written even before "The Tomb" and "Dagon." The story was published in "United Amateur" under the pseudonym Humphry Littlewit, Esq., thus using the name of the narrator.

Another fine production (of a brilliant Lovecraft tale) by Gates of Imagination. The exquisite English, witty dialogue & droll sarcastic exchange leading to friendship = epic. "That, sir, does not do your understanding particular credit." Excellent again, Gate of I.
The fact that this remarkable production of Lovecraft's amazing "A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson" has only 607 views and 44 likes (as of this writing on 6/22/23) during the month since its inception staggers the reasonable mind.

@@gatesofimagination Please excuse my humble ignorance, but: public domain? Is that no longer a thing? Or is copyright law surrounding uber-popular franchises a complicated affair beyond my poor understanding? In any event, Gates of Imaginations's Dracula is a brilliant production of Stoker's epoch-making horror classic. I realize that you receive high praise in perpetuity and therefore my humble comment may lack any salient impact. But Gates of Imagination deserves recognition for making so much great fiction easily accessible to the masses with high-quality audio adaptations. It's my hope that G.O.I. will enjoy every possible success.
@michaelkottler The appearance is that large companies use automatic content recognition systems. As all of the Dracula videos contain the same text, they must have overzealously picked up the similarity. This happens quite often, but this case was extremely irritating as, after our appeal, someone manually claimed copyrights to Dracula's recordings. We had to launch a counter-claims procedure on RUclips to get it back. Anyway, it's back on the channel 😉
