This time on THE IDENT REVIEW, we look at the NEW 2023 revamp for the BBC's leading children's channels! That being CBBC and CBEEBIES! These channels are held in the hearts of several generations of viewers, so how do the new presentation for them work out? Is it a much needed modern update, or do they completely fall flat... find out in today's episode of THE IDENT REVIEW!
The Ident Review began in May 2018 and since has spawned over 100 episodes and even a spin-off show, the Ident Review Extra! It remains a firm AMTV favourite to this day!

I’ve seen the new CBBC and CBeebies logos, and I’m sorry to say this, but I don’t like them. They look lazy, cheap and absolutely lacklustre.

Well don't get me wrong, the new CBBC idents are beautiful, colourful and eye-catching and the computer graphics are amazing, my only criticism is they don't really scream CBBC for me in the way that the previous idents did, somehow they look more like idents you would see on BBC Three rather than CBBC especially if you compare them with the 2002 blobs look and the quirky animations of the 2007 idents. That's just me being really picky though, as I said, the idents themselves are beautiful.🙂

To think that the old CBeebies logo (which was very nostalgic to me) has survived for longer than all other TV channel logos; 21 years!
21 YEARS old that logo was! But I do miss it.

I did watch cbeebies the other day to see the new idents in person. The channel is just so wholesome now compared to the 2000's. They sang a song about how everyone is welcome and I cried! - I may have to tune in more often.
I'm with you, buddy. I live in France but sheesh, CBeebies's new idents and soundtrack just give me the chills to the point I'm almost tearing up.

The artistry in these children's idents is honestly so impressive. Both sets look so beautiful
Wow the Cbeebies ones actually have character! And a unifying concept! And beautiful animation! I feel like out of the two, they had 90% of the branding effort put into them. I really like these ones.
The new night screen for CBeebies is definitely less creepy/uncanny as the pink/green screen with the text

Before the rebrand they used the old blobs sleeping on clouds at midnight.
Now it's a bit realistic where you actually sleep on the ground instead of

The new CBBC idents are very surreal and abstract but in a good way, like something out of a Salvador Dali painting. The new ones for Cbeebies are a great follow up to the old ones and they retain the iconic characters.

I think my favourite thing about these is actually the new transitions at the end of show promos to the iPlayer card. On CBBC, they use the long noodles things which are iridescent to morph into the three pink blocks; on CBeebies, it's the three bugs jumping into the centre and turning into the pink blocks. So lovely and nice to see how the three block idea across the whole network has been carefully adapted in all executions to suit the audience.
Have to point out that for Wednesday, the bugs may also be making a reference to "hump day"

I actually really enjoy the "Lunchtime" bumper, because after 2 Bugbies crash into the tree, the smallest Bugbie makes a slanted face, as if he was about to tell them that they died. So frogging funny! And the "Bedtime" bumper actually reveals a beautiful ability that they have: *They can glow!*
The "Tube Men" ident reminds me of the BBC Choice idents from the 90s.
Fluid also reminds me of BBC Two's Inflate ident.
Prickly reminds me of BBC Two's Zebra Op Art ident.
I've never seen this channel before, but this is the exact video I was looking for, and it came up in my recommended, thankyou.
I love the CBBC idents! The CGI is so awesome in them. For CBeebies there is still familiarity with the bugs. And when I first saw those new bugs on the test page, I thought they looked cute and adorable, despite not having the same nostalgia as before! For the idents, they look really nice, and the Bedtime one looks very wholesome, like something satisfying you'd listen to from the soundtrack of the ident.
For CBeebies there’s also new idents featuring characters from their respective shows like Alpha/Numberblocks, Bing, Australian kids series Bluey and Hey Duggee dancing around while one of the kids says their program is coming up next before the episode starts.
There’s a few for CBBC also but the only one thats online right now is The Next Steps variant

Would not be surprised if the director of the CBBC idents was the same as for BBC Three. They have style and polish but also not much character. I do like a few of their concepts, like the falling blocks and the sound wave, but I’m not sure about their execution.
It's weird how they decided to change for some reason. I still like the cbeebees ident.
Also, I'm glad that the ident review is back at it again!
It's bc of a BBC rebrand....they had to change every channel to fit the theme
Yeah I’m all in for unification branding but for CBBC and Cbeebees seems really lazy. Like there’s no charm in the logo. The idents are charming and pretty nice, but the logo is so freaking lazy that I want to make it have a more imaginative font. Well hey, Atleast CBeebies has that round font and other stuff.
Not as bad as I originally thought, but not that good either, imo. I don't like that there's a complete lack of identity unlike the 2016 and especially 2007 idents. If you told me that these idents had come from BBC Three, I'd believe you. They look decent, but there isn't a focus, and nothing about it screams CBBC, at least how I knew it.
That said, my nostalgia bias is definitely clouding my vision here. They're fun at the very least and have a really nice colour scheme.

The Cbeebies idents are really cute! The blobs are very expressive, and the consistent art style is very aesthetically pleasing. :)
Same here! except i don't really have any nostalgia for the channel due to being from the US, so yeah, the idents on cbbc are generic
I definitely can’t help but notice they’ve been made in the same CG “sets” as the Three ones, yeah
I MUCH prefer the old mix of hand drawn + cg of the old idents. Also, these idents are set in blank boring scenes and don’t contain any creatures which I think added so much character to the old idents
The Cbeebies ones are cute, and don't stray too far from the old branding, but the CBBC are giving more of a BBC Three young adult vibe to me, kinda night club ish. I do like the colour scheme, and I like the new set for CBBC continuity, maybe it's the lack of faces or the squidgy noises, maybe it's the sound and lack of faces , but I find the CBBC ones unsettling 😂 They creep me out 😂
I was slightly taken aback by the fact that the cbeebies indents weren't as bright as the old (like that really bright blue they use to have) but I think in terms of accessibility it's a really good thing. It makes it considerably less overwhelming to look at which can be a really good thing especially for younger kids who may not be able to communicate effectively
There are more CBBC ones that you didn't include, there is a five second version of Invention as well as another 10 second one where the sentient block snake things appear and disappear through multiple trap doors but it didn't appear until 7pm on Wednesday but was before Newsroujd on Thursday. There are also a number of three second ones which are on every single advert break, they all begin with a CBBC logo then the three block snake things coming out of them, but many different ones (as seen in the trap door one). There is the furry one, the weird electronic one, the sequin one and the plain one. Also the previous ones included seasonal ones like the one with the Igloo which only appeared in December and January so there may be more to come!

Plus when I tuned in for the launch of the new Pokémon anime in December, they've made a couple of idents specifically to show before Pokémon.
@@itskdog There's a Pokemon one, a Horrible Histories one (there used to be 3 different ones) and a Dragons the Nine Realms one (which they actually show before any version of Dragons despite the audio clearly saying the Nine Realms!)

it should be remembered that today is the age of all these oddly satisfying cgi softbody simulation animations that are really popular with Today's Youth so I can definitely see why the cbbc might've did that for their idents to appeal more with Today's Youth
as for cbeebies I feel like changing the blobs to squares was a really wise choice because the whole thing with the bbc rebrand is that the 3 blocks of the logo are now like really flexible so changing the blobs to blocks was definitely a wise choice to fit in with the whole block thing of the rebrand (as demonstrated in the generic sting)

The CBBC “Invention” ident reminds me of those satisfying ASMR videos you’d see on RUclips, especially that part with the ball in the hydraulic press.
The “beads” gave me 2010s Nickelodeon vibes and the “Fluid”, “Cracks” and “Tangled’” idents have me Splatoon vibes for some reason, I guess whenever I see something colourful and wacky, my mind just goes to the colourful wacky aesthetic of the Splatoon games lol. These ones especially “Tangled”, reminded me of one of the characters, named Harmony.
The “Prickly” ident reminds me of those flippable sequin cushions and plushies
The new CBeebies blobs… if I can call them blobs anymore, they’re more like gumdrops or jelly cubes now and they kind of remind me of an extremely oversimplified version of SpongeBob, in a humorous way though
I was watching a fw of these earlier this morning. The CBBC ones are funny and ridiculous! There's one link where the hosts want you to tape their children screaming "WAKE UP!!!!!!" as loud and as earbleeding as you possibly can and send it in to the network and they would play the vids on the studio monitors. The CBeebies ones are basically the same logo but straighten up a bit similar to the BBC 1997 rebrand but I don't see the Melt text font anywheree for the branding. CBeebies has a new font for the days of the week and its blocks of programs (Get Set Go, Discover and Do, Bedtime Closedown Hour, etc.) which I unfortunately don't know the name of (or is it a new version of the Melt font used since Feb/11/2002 I don't know). At least the CBeebies bugs blobs and three-note jingle are still here to stay and the bugs got new designs which is adorable.
Cbeebies is my childhood and after seeing the new idents all I can say is... WHERE ARE MY BLOBS?! LOOK AT HOW THEY MASSACRED MY BOY!!
The Cbeebies idents are so wholesome. They've overall done a pretty fantastic job with the overall rebrand

Those "Fart sounds" are the sounds of a thin inflatable plastic, you hear that sound all the time in a bouncy castle or around a Tube man.
And that’s also what foley artists use for fart noises :) so it’s understandable he’d think that lol

The Redesigns of the CBeebies bugs look like those Tooty Frootie sweets
Well, at least they still use the iconic three-note jingle for CBeebies, but it's reimagined than the classic one which used for 21 years.
I love the CBBC idents, they remind me a bit of the classic Three idents with how they focus on bright colours, experimentation and texture.
It seems that the 1997 effect has been repeated. I never liked the 1997 CBBC logo by itself, or the current one, but in both eras, the idents do sort of make up for it.
As for CBeebies, I do like how the BBC blocks transform into the bugbies (if they're still called that.) But, that's all I can say about that channel's new look.
This takes me back to 2004-2005 with the green and neon colour theme for CBBC even though the logo is very basic It's a hell of a lot better than the last logo that CBBC used. If I was a kid again I'd definitely enjoy this

The only way I can describe the new CBBC idents is that they're strange screensavers. You can look at them here and say it's fine but I can't see it fitting in-between show advertisements and the shows themselves. I remember the 2016 rebrand the most and it felt a lot more creative than now.
As for CBeebies, I kinda found the old blobs ugly in certain idents, like you can tell these were made in different times because of how their looks differ. The new ones are a lot more fun and definitely a lot more cuter, the main problem I have is the children shouting being repeated, because as far as I can remember, it was only said once.
My toddler has passed judgement on the Cbeebies idents. "Very nice" so I reckon the BBC can count that one as a success.
They nailed the CBeebies logo and idents but the CBBC ones could be for any other BBC channel and I wouldn’t know…
At 15:00 I feel the bridge look is a nod to the old logo, where the word CBeebies bridged over the BBC logo
The CBBC idents would seem more at home on BBC Three. The Cbeebies idents are nice enough though.
The cbeebies idents look really well and fit the channel, I kind of think the cbbc idents could have went a bit further with it's target demographic (maybe because the background and ideas they used are really simplistic) but I don't think it's bad by any means. good video by the way!

I am honestly so glad they changed the bedtime place card thingy, I was born in 2008 and I was absolutely terrified of the old one. It was just a coloured background with no audio and the same text from the newer one. It looked slightly ominous lmao
The CBeebies Goodnight Sign is way more peaceful than the old one. Definitely a childhood fear for many.

Hello ‘Bugs’
The original CBeebies mascots from 2002 were called bugs as well. The ‘bugbies’ term came about about a decades later.
I'd almost say the new more wholesome and slice of life take to the cbeebies bugs is slightly inspired by bluey, a BBC co production with an Australian animation company that's hugely popular amongst both children and parents (hell, I'm a student and sometimes if I need something to calm down I may or may not be partial to an episode of Bluey myself)
Yeah, even the idents' backgrounds are similar to the backgrounds from Bluey, which is my favorite Aussie show.

CBeebies is a nice refresh, but CBBC I'm not so keen on. It's like a blend of current BBC Two and BBC Three. I love the BBC Two curve, but the BBC Three hands are horrible. I find the CBBC idents overly abstract. The CBBC name is a bit of a problem for the unified channel concept, in that you already have BBC spelt out at the top of the idents, then a repetition at the bottom. I'm in two minds about the way the BBC have made all of their channels blend in with one another. Whilst its good for bringing the family of content together under a more easily recognisable branding, I feel that it's restricting each strand of the BBC's portfolio from developing its own identity. I used to like when BBC One and BBC Two did their own thing, and also the radio services. You still knew it was BBC, but the corporate identity wasn't forced in your face. But I concede that the times we live in now probably do need that unification, due to the sheer number of offerings available and the number of ways to access them.
They know. While Cbeebies keeps it's name on international versions, the international versions of CBBC are called BBC Kids.
@@JASpiring I get the sense that now may have been the moment that the CBBC name would have been replaced with something new, but they just stuck with it for the sake of it being pointless to rebrand when it's going off air in a couple of years anyway. My prediction is that the CBBC name won't be continued when it moves exclusively to streaming. With the imminent closure of the CITV channel and an upcoming name change to ITV Kids, it makes CBBC feel even more like a spillover from a bygone era.
And international service of CBeebies will be rebranded as BBC Kids.
These idents are quite nice!
But in cbbc's case I'm rather confused
Cbbc is closing later in the year so these are only gonna exist for a few more months
Cbbc is continuing until 2025 at the earliest. Citv is the one shutting down this year

I think the basic use of the Inter font for both of the logos makes them extremley boring but whoever is doing the BBC's branding currently is smart. Make the logos simple and boring for corporate, make the idents entertaning so when people flick through channels it chatches their eye.
What happened to the intro where you says "Hello! and welcome to The Idents Review, the RUclips series where we have a good look and chat about the various TV idents that we've come to known and love over the years. And for this installment..." It just cuts to the title card after the AMTV Social Media plug without the intro narration.

Everytime I've seen cbeebies, i see cuteness overload.
the new logos are horrendous, abysmal, inuriating. i thought i was mad at the generic nothingness of the 2016 redesign, but this is feeeling like corporate unity gone too far. i get trying to make all the BBC channels feel like they have a vibe but as "sturdy bbc framework" or whatever but doing this to CBBC is too far, it feels like it has no identity. The cbeebies ones are still ok, changing the blobs to blocks to fit the cbeebies and new bbc identity, it works, but why CBBC man, corporate minimalism need not go this far!
The off air thing looks very nice compared to the blue screen saying we’re off the air in the early 2010s

Unfortunately I think it must be said - the CBBC idents to me feel a bit like BBC Two offcuts! But I’m not sure that’s entirely a bad thing - I loved that sort of liminal vibe as a kid (I’m not sure whether the majority would share that view). The CBeebies idents are adorable! Cute without having that sort of plasticky, early 00s CG thing that I grew up with (I think they must follow the gender direction of the channel’s programmes in appealing to parents as well as toddlers).
I actually enjoy the CBeebies ident. It could’ve been worse; they’ve kept the bugs which has always been with CBeebies. Although I think it would be better if they were more ‘liquidy’ like they previously were.
Now for CBBC, I get that the channel is for older children, but at times it feels a bit too ‘adulty’. With the BBC logo being at top of the screen, I think it’d be better if they did C and then the BBC logo rather than 2 logos on the screen.
CBBC looks like a lend into BBC Three ident to me.
The only issue I have with the new CBeebies idents is that the square bugs and new logo are not as wobbly, malleable and flexible as the original 2002 bugs.

The CBBC logo is a good one for me. I can see they have made the channel more BBC like if you know what I mean. It reminds me of the new bbc 3 logo which is a bit of a coincidence, because the last logo they had was like bbc 3. Although, being a 2000s kid I hate the new CBeebies logo. My favourite children’s logo they did was propably the one in 2002 I think? I liked it because the blobs were represented in both channels, knowing it was bbc children’s. Although, good ident review Adam can’t wait for some more in the future!
I hate the new logo, it’s boring and not fun. Kids don’t want to follow the adult’s rules, so why would they want their channel’s logo to.

There's probably still a few shows with the green CBBC logo too. They'll only have the new logos on new episodes, repeats or recently made shows will still have the old logos, but anything made from now on should carry the new ones.
im prety sure that they made the bugs in the cebeebies idents square to match the bbc logo
i like how they can just go all out when designing childrens channels. kids don't care as much as adults do, so it really gives the designers much more flexibility and freedom
as of right now, they haven't changed it for Saturday Mash Up yet so we still have a little bit of time left before it's all gone

I haven't seen an ident with a yellow background since the old BBC 2 idents in the 2000s!
Prickly most likely was inspired by a McCoo and a McZoo. They are both painted by Steven Brown and incorporates an elephant design, like a McZoo but a fuzzy rainbow design like a McCoo. (Both of then are rainbow but McCoos are the ones that have a fuzzy design coming off with rainbows)
I've recorded most of these but I don't really like the new rebrand it's so abrupt but it's creative.

The CBeebies "Blobs" are very similar to the "tutti fruit" sweets you used to see.
I think they rebooted this show, Adam sounds different and the intro has changed to be really simplistic.
What in the name of sanity is that cbbc ident, it looks like those inflatable wavy arms things you see at car sales.

I recall I watched CBeebies for quite a while even into my later childhood to some degree ... seeing the new idents for CBeebies .. their aesthetic ... makes me smile very much =] The new idents for CBBC look as zany and fun as they should be, too ! Really cool all around
