That look/sounds a lot like Marine Velvet, Its very similar to Marine Ich. I made the same mistake. The difference is Marine Velvet once reach a certain population will explode rapidly peppering most of your fish in small white dots/bubbles (looking super similar to ich) but Marine Velvet can kill in a matter of hours-days, while ich will typically take a couple days-weeks to kill your fish depending on size. With how rapidly the white dots showed up and how fast it killed your tang, most likely Marine Velvet, might be why the ich meds didn't work fast enough, even though their both parasites.

Thank you for hammering this point home. I myself, am guilty of almost never quarantining new fish. But I've also had a lot of issues come up, likely because of that. As a hobbyist myself, I really appreciate you showing us your wins and your losses. This is how we, as a fishnerd community, learn w/o having to face these losses our selves.

Ive had salt water aquariums for many years. Recently i am losing interest in it because of just how much more work and husbandry they require over my freshwater tanks. Water testing, salinity checks, feeding corals, expensive lights, rodi water makers for water changes, protein skimmers, etc etc. At this point im ready to talk to my LFS and ask if any of the employees would want my fish and corals so i know they go to good homes. Fresh water tanks are so much more simplified and easier to maintain and i think that brings more satisfaction for me now.

Sorry to hear about that mate. You're (in my eyes) probably the fishtuber who talks most about quarantining, and that's really great. I now have a tank that can be used for quarantining and hospitalising fish, and it was probably you who pushed me over the edge into doing it. I've only ever had one group of fish who needed quarantining - 10 rummynose from a random fish store, and luckily I quarantined them, as they all got awful fungus and fin rot immediately, and died within a day (despite my best attempts to medicate and save them).

Saltwater velvet and ich are very similar in appearance. It hammers fast where ich is slow as fast as everything dropped it was velvet. This is reason 1 why I always run a uv sterilizer on all my tanks fresh or Saltwater. Why to prevent losses similar to this from ever happening again to me. I lost 3 grand in fish from an outbreak of velvet.

It's irrelevant at this point but that's almost certainly velvet. Only a select few can tell the difference by looking alone but, what sets ich and velvet apart are the fishes behavior (with velvet they'll search for fast current likes from power heads) and the time it takes to kill. Like in freshwater its rare for ich to kill at all and when it does it's months later. With velvet you're lucky to make it a week or 2. Ich also usually progresses much slower. Velvet you can go from no spots to complete coverage in 4 hours.

Hey Joey, we all make mistakes. One bit of saltwater husbandry that I would advise everyone do, is run a UV sterilizer. They are rather inexpensive, and can save a tank during an ich outbreak (even with observational quarantine, like you practice, ich still pops up from time to time). Anyways, it seems like you're getting the hang of the saltwater thing. Not trying to push you into doing anything, but it would be really cool to see your approach to a Reef setup. I know you had a nano reef for a while, but it would be really cool to see all those DIY tank hardware used in an awesome setup.

    Joey, 2 things.
    1) I think that was marine velvet, not ich. Much more deadly and much harder to treat.
    2) marine ich is super easy to treat\prevent. Do a bare tank transfer every 4 days. It disrupts the life cycle so, as long as the fish is\are still eating, I guarantee success. Copper is a poison and carcinogen and often inhibits appetite and reduces life expectancy. I understand that, in some cases, the fish are too far gone(with dinos, velvet, or brook)and copper is the only hope but, I have had good success with 5m FW dips(every other day) and Ruby reef rally at 2x recommend strength, tank transfered while the fish are in the fw dip.

@@sharonwolfe5210 with Ruby reef rally, when the fish are getting their 5m FW dip, I do not return them to the same container. I put them in a new container, with new saltwater, and re-dose the 2x recommended dosage of RRR. Worth mentioning, on the next day, I will sometimes dose that water with the recommended dosage of RRR if the fish\parasites aren't responding as well as hoped or if I want to keep the pressure on the parasites. If the fish seem to particularly weak or seem to be pulling through, I usually don't stress them with the additional dose.
Also, respect the 5 minute freshwater time limit and make sure the water is roughly the same temp. Buffering it isn't that important but, temp is. At 5 minutes the fish are in real bad shape. The fish may lay down like it's dead prior to 5m, this is normal. DO NOT DO MORE THAN 5 MINUTES and do not do it more than every other day. It takes a full day for them to recover from the trauma of the dip. However, it really helps kill off the parasites in the gills that inhibit the fish from breathing(which is how they die).

Being a guppy person I either have them in perminant qt or never qt depending on how you look at it. Each type I get goes into it's own tank for at least 3 months before I think about doing a cross or moving them in with other fish. And for some reason I have had more illness show up in my tanks this year than I have in a decade. Like you with ich and the salt fish, I've delt with pin tail, ich, fungal, and columnaris. Sorry for the loss of all the fish. I feel you on that.

Tangs have very thin slime coats, so they are pretty much ich magnets. A lot of the times, you shouldn't be wondering IF they will get ich, you should be wondering WHEN they will get it.

Ich doesn't just magically show up, it is a parasite. Your fish had to be infected initially with the parasite to begin with, otherwise you will never have it.

Great looking saltwater Tank. The fish selection is great. I have a 40 gal saltwater with clowns, coral beauty, 6 line wrasse and bicolor dotty. I also have a pink cushion urchin, cleaner shrimp, sexy shrimp on my rock flower anemone plus some torch and frog spawn corals a Kenya tree coral and a pom, pom xenia You are right the colors and shape of saltwater fish can't be found in fresh water.

Tell then everything, that’s how people learn from you. I don’t have huge tanks like you do but even the smallest thing like quarantining actually it’s not small, it’s important that we learn about these things. You’re right on top of everything, You know you have to make yourself happy, not me or anyone else , if they don’t like it they don’t have to look they can go ( I’ll be nice ) take a hike . You make me happy by just looking at your 🐠 room . 🤗 💖

Had fish in my quarantine last week and then bam. My powder brown was covered in it. I yanked the tang and 3 anthias and they are now cooking in Cupermine. They’re doing great with no sign of ich. I can only imagine what fresh he’ll I would have been in for if I had popped and dropped them into my 150gal reef! ALWAYS quarantine! All 4 of these fish looked perfect when they came home with me and no one had ever had ich in the tank I put them in before.

    • @wesleyturner1979
      @wesleyturner1979 4 года назад

Update... Strangely enough the powder brown is fine but one of the anththias didn’t make it through the copper treatment. I don’t like to treat cupermine at full strength either. All the three remainders are now fattening up in an extra tank before going into the display next weekend.

I think I’m going to get into saltwater for the first time. I want to upgrade my 2 cichlid tanks to around 100 gallons each and use the smaller tanks (two 55 gallon) to try a reef setup.
