Him being thrown off balance from his attacks isn't all. He's got a wider stance for lots of attacks, he does the "super hero landing" when coming from the air, and he's got less flair/showboating with his style. It all gives the impression that he is weaker, less confident, and less skilled than the older OG.
it's a well done change. It carries the implication that he's still developing, and it looks good for the style they were aiming for.

DmC Dante feels a lot more reckless and loose with his attacks, which kind of makes more sense for the kind of spirit of the series as a whole. You’re always so much more powerful than the low-level grunts you’re fighting that your priority isn’t surviving, it’s styling on them as hard as you possibly can. And you can see this attitude more in the more reckless, less professional fighting style of DmC Dante.

DmC may take a lot of flak but you have to admit the artstyle and art direction is grade A. The saturated colors differentiating limbo and the real world, the broken landscapes with floating islands and debris, and the moving structures that make the it feel like the world itself it trying to kill you. Dmc5 is a good looking game, especially on this current generation but the grays, reds & oranges, and purples of the city and qlipoth are meh.

You what I'll give DmC Reboot props for the Reboot/Younger Dante actually stumbles and takes a second to reorient himself due to sheer force and weight of Rebellion. You get the feeling of his youth and inexperience with every strike. There's this directness as well like every newbie in the workforce that's want to be taken seriously does everything matter-factly. Something that younger pre-reboot Dante didn't do. That Dante had more control and still goofed around via jumping/riding the bodies of his targets while still kicking ass giving the impression that while he was still "new" to the business he still wasn't exactly new. You can tell that he'd been using Rebellion for a very long time and was comfortable with the weight and power of each strike. Whereas younger Dante doesn't give that impression. He's still fresh and wet around the ears. His build is not fully developed enough to handle the likes of Rebellion. Meaning he probably didn't starting practicing with Rebellion until maybe a few years prior to DmC. Maybe, if this iteration of DmC hadn't fucked up as much, we would have eventually come to see some version of the Dante we've come to know and love.
I wasn't a big fan of the angel/demon thing since that never made any sense. Demons are just fallen angels thereby making Vergil/Dante full angel/demon. Nephilims are human-angel hybrid. Cambions are human-demon. It's why it was such a big deal in DMC. The second-hand of the Demon Emperor turned his back on his own kind for the sake of humanity (the weaker species/food). Not because he fell in no love with a human but because he saw something in humans that was worth fighting/defending for -- that was worth giving up his power for. Perhaps humanity's capability for compassion? Who knows? Eventually falling in love with an actual human. And that's what the Reboot failed to understand. As I look back I can genuinely see the potential had the storyline been handled differently and gotten somethings correctly lore wise. Removing the "nephilim" aspect you can see the retelling of a bastardized version of fall of Lucifer. Both brothers are angels on corrupted as of yet as children. Dante in the beging leaning into becoming a demon but finding a reason to be something more and becoming an actual angel whereas Vergil corrupted by actions of humanity's cruelty maybe? Or maybe just corrupted by the shitty life he had to live after being separated from his family falls from grace and becomes a demon? Who knows...guess we will never know. 🤷

Well yes, since reboot Dante got his memory sealed or something he probably only get to use rebellion like a punk. Young Dante in DMC3 was killing every demon he can find, believing he will eventually get revenge for his mother's death or as Dante himself like to say "hit the jackpot". So of course he can fight like Rebellion is an extensiom of his body, he got personal motivation to train and use it while reboot Dante doesn't cuz of memory loss.

@@c-sar5395 Well I can't say anything about that since I haven't played the game since it first came out and beat it in a single sitting (me who sucked balls at the time so you can imagine my disappointment).
I'm just making my observations from what I've seen here but I've recently decided to maybe give it another go. I heard the Definitive Edition made some improvements. Maybe I'll change my opinions on Reboot Dante/Vergil.
I'm just saying that I *like* that Reboot Dante is stumbling and has to reorient himself after doing some strikes with Rebellion. I'm not saying pre-reboot is the better version. I'm pointing out the differences between the two iterations, it helps to solidify that while these two Dantes might the same character they are still vastly different from each other due to differring life experiences. As far as I know Reboot Dante didn't grow up to become a mercenary like Dante (who also had a case of the amnesia as well mind you and for a while going the by the name of Tony Redgrave -- if I remember correctly). I like these differences in the characters. I like the visible differences in the handling of Rebellion as well. I'm sure it's the same with Vergil as well.
I guess I'll see how much my opinion will change after buying the Definitive Edition and giving it another go. Most of what I remember from playing the game was the They Live!-esque style they had going on and the inner literature-nerd in me enjoyed that.

Well that’s exactly what Dmc is described as these days: An Alternate Universe game. And since we have DMC5, that game makes Dmc obsolete and unimportant in terms of continuity and that game’s story is filled with retcons and inconsistencies even standing on its own. I don’t want to look at Dmc and it’s world as trash just because it’s different in fact and I’m being honest here, I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel to Dmc as I believe it’s possible to make that world interesting and also flesh out it’s characters. Now will a sequel happen? Likely not as both the original release of Dmc and the Definitive Edition in 2015 wasn’t what Capcom was hoping for in the sales department but it’s interesting to think about in my opinion.

It was shallow enough for me to have fun with it, being my first dmc game ever played, while having some complexity within its combos that kept me interested. Seeing a lot of misinformed comments about why people hated/didn't like DmC so let me clear this up from a technical and fan perspective. I will mainly talk about the vanilla version the definitive hardly matters cause damage was done even if it corrected a lot of problems (not all.)
Combat is clunky despite animation being nice, and didn't offer much in terms of it's flexibility. Something casual players will overlook, but the difference is there if you were to advidly compate the two back to back while playing. It suffered from a lack of staples the series is known for: No lock on, two dodge buttons was pointless, NO TAUNT, forced weapon use for certain types of enemies, generic CW type plot that tried too hard to push an edgy narrative without much substance to it, and overall while the art style is nice and talent is there, it doesn't speak to anything of what the series pulls in. (Bright, splotchy colors aren't exactly something the brother of a RE game is meant to have. )
A lot of people think fans hated it for how he looks, but that's only a small portion of what went down. Donte used to look MUCH worse, in the very first trailer. He had an ugly face, white patch of hair in the back, smoked, and overall looked like a strung out druggie. His look improved, despite the grievances of him being so offputtingly different from the original, but fine. People got over it.
The PR was combative against fans, the lead dev was a huge egotistical dick who fought with fans on twitter, and they constantly mocked the old one while shilling theirs. Not how to win an audience. They showed constant lack of understanding of the series, changing up what it was. "It's a reboot" "It's a re-imagining" "It's an au" and eventually, "It's an au" was what they went for, but not after several months of pittering back and forth.
That, and the gameplay while competent isn't flavorful. You can have a well functioning game all day, but I found myself playing this only twice in completion (which is bad considering I have played every other title multiple multiple times. Hell even DMC2 has more playtime than this, but that's a younger me not knowing any better).
Adding elements like platforming that really wasn't even platforming since it spoonfed you the actions made the game slow and the pacing uninteresting. The plus side to this is that the animation of the world 'being alive' was a nicely added touch.
Last but not least, the gaming journos were the nail in the coffin. They added to the overall shitting on the original games, shitting on the fans for 'letting it fail', and constantly tried to one up why it's better than the other, and why people should buy it. It was weird. Considering they barely did this with other games at the time, yet were hyperfixated on this, making it seem like they were being paid to shill this game like it had no issues.
Overall, please stop saying 'it got undeserved hate' or 'idk why people hated it'
    THERES YOUR REASONS.
(ps. stop calling the reboot 'DMC' that's for the og series the reboot is 'DmC' )

You can see that his movement is more violent and packs a punch with the dynamic camera but is quite rough around the edges signifying his hot-blooded and violent nature.
Compare this to Dante’s stylish yet refined movement that only has a few attacks emphasizing impact then you can see that Donte is strong but still lacking and crude unlike Dante who has so much experience that he simply plays with and styles on demons instead which shows his wacky woohoo pizza man side while still being the legendary demon hunter that he is with how polished his movements are.

Played the game last week out of curiosity and to my surprise, the game is actually great! The gameplay, combat, artstyle, and the music are awesome.
I didn't expect much about the characters and the storyline coz I've been well informed about it, but it's actually not that awful.
I would love to play more of something like DmC, maybe a sequel or a remake of a reboot (?)

This game got a lot of hate becausw "fans" want change but dont want any change at all. They dont know what they want.
Tho i admit that a reboot didnt feel like it was needed and some story decisions were odd, but still decent.
Anyways people hated nero in dmc4 but they hated dante in dmc so much they liked dmc5 having nero and all back again

When you now look back and try to understand why there was great negatively towards the reboot, you have to understand that it's not the quality of the product that was at fault.
You can find fluent animations and generally fun gameplay. What was the problem was that it wasn't the original, but was in the position to replace it as the new DMC.
You could not see it as an alternative game that you can just play alongside the original, as there was to be no more original. Everyone back then was forced to hold onto this reboot, and feel extra sad about anything from the original that was absent from the reboot.
So when everyone now comes back after the original got a sequel, the context is completely different.

I had only played DMC3 and 4 when DmC was announced, I wasn't really super attached to the characters since I hadn't really played those games for a lot of hours. so I was really hyped for DmC as a twelve-year-old lol, although a bit dissatisfied with the character reworks. but still, I found the design, the animation, and the whole aesthetics of the game incredible. I LOVED it, and played it for hundreds of hours on Xbox and later on PC. it was kinda my first time REALLY getting into the series. I love DMC5 too, but DmC has a special place in my heart, so I kinda wish it gets a sequel. it would be awesome to have both series.

Game is fun, but the areas started to blend together since nothing popped out and everything was grey or just washed out in color. Not to mention a lot of places looked almost too similar.

there's a lot of nuance and polish in DmC that doesn't get enough credit. like how combos have signals that communicate different timings for starting different combos, expressed as a glare of light on your blade (etc.), which also just add to the overall flair and style. the moves have a lot more focus on color and keeping a consistent set of colors for different actions, not only as a stylistic choice but also as a indirect way of conveying information. it even ties in with the gameplay with some enemies requiring matching colors of attacks and weapons to match with their enemy's color variant. it's an amazing cohesion between a bunch of different elements, style, design and mechanics that function after the same set of rules, coming together to create one harmonious experience. this exaggerated use of color, reminding me of mirror's edge, also adds to readability and contributes to DmC being so accesible to new players. the visiual element is very deliberately crafted to cater to the gameplay element, in a more hyperbolic way. the overly colorful and stylistic enviroments and enemies actually contribute to the action very deliberately and aren't just placed there because the artists thought they were cool.
a lot of animations don't just have a lot of attention in their actual active frames but in the *recovery* which is really undervalued as a means of illustrating weight and power behind an attack. after you unleash a move the motion of your attack carries forward through his body, reeling from the attack as he resets back to neutral. often in a really exaggerated way. in fact all the moves in DmC are really hyperbolic and exaggerated, it's as if they're really trying to highlight the key frames of motion like in a fighting game such as tekken. again, adding to readability. DmC seems to really stress accessibility for new players without making veteran fans feel unwelcome, which they absolutely succeeded in (even if style points are inflated and too easy to get).
DmC doesn't get enough credit and recognition within the franchise imo, ppl tend to forget it was a thing, it is more of a spin-off that went in a new direction so i understand why people view it somewhat seperately from the rest of the entries in the series. but DmC absolutely deserves the same respect and love as the other games. a more cartoonish, stylistic and exaggerated style that really flows with the arcadey nature of the game, in contrast to the main series more realistic and dark visuals, DmC is extremely colorful in *everything.* this style and this gameplay could not have been accomplished without the other, i'm glad it tried to be different. even if it's drenched in angsty teenage edgelord vibes.
