Stop Motion Paper Animation with Any Graphic!

- A few of you asked how to do a paper fold-out animation just like in Ali Abdaal's shorts with ANY image you want. Well, today I answer that question with 3 different techniques!
Links to everything discussed in the video:

🎵 Mechanical Wave - Paper - Newspaper Turning Page
Just like you, I wanted to know how to achieve this stop motion paper fold-out animation using any graphic I wanted. And I actually found 3 different ways.
The first of which is to simply use a paid plugin, letting someone else do the work for you. More expensive, but easy.
The second method is to actually print out you image and take incremental photos folding it up. You then simply stagger the starting point of each photo in your editing software and boom! There you have it.
The final method is the coolest. It's free, will allow you to customize your paper wrinkle animation to anything you want and can even be used to unfold footage.
I hope you enjoyed! And be sure to let me know if you use any method discussed.

Interesting techniques, mate. Great video!
I had a project last week where I was lacking a printer but still wanted that precise unfolding look.
So instead, I traced the asset through an iPad screen on red gift wrapping paper, cut it out, shot it on a green screen and just keyed out the two colors. Then I adjusted the mask of the digital asset and the result was pretty good!
You are a legend, thanks mate

Hey Man, One doubt. When clicking track matte options, I was shown 4 options actually. Alpha and Alpha matte inverted, Luma and Luma matte inverted. I tried all but it is not shown like in the video

You're totally give me a new knowledge hahaha
Because I'm about to find how Ali Abdaal's Video Editor make any stuff with paper animation. And it turn out that the process for 3rd plugin is little bit confusing and need to replay the video again hahah
Thank you so much
haha you're welcome! Yes, the third technique looks a little intense. But after you've tried it, it's actually pretty simple.

On the one hand Im really suprised that this only got 33k views, on the other hand I don't want hunderds of thousands of people to know this information. Liked, subbed and commented though to not be evil.
Hehe thanks 🙏
Finally someone to the rescue, as someone who edits for money, its frustration for me when I see a cool effects but have no idea how its made. it's pretty embarrassing too lol. thank you so much.
I had the same feeling, that's why i tried to figure out how to do it myself ;)
thank you for sharing your hard earned knowledge with us man@@Validation

You're welcome!

That’s awesome to hear! :))
Lit bro 🔥
🙏
You deserved more subs bro trust me
Thanks so much man!
If you're confused about getting the solid with the mask drawn on it to work (because he never outright tells you how to make it work) pause the video at 12:23 and set your images up as he has. The only difference is you don't need to the second paper fold out layer above the Image placement. Also make sure your solid and Image placement layers are not visible before the first mask keyframe you made otherwise you will see your image before the paper folds out.
0:15 you took the words out of my mouth
Bro I don't know anything about editing but still your video was awesome it made me watch it
You have skills 😅
u are the best hope u get 100k asap
Thank you!! Who knows… maybe one day soon 😜
Nah im pretty sure u deserve more
Thank you so much dear for this :D Great Love from Pakistan ❤️
Glad to have you here!!
You always impress me with your work it's just amazing How many years you've been working in the industry?
U got subscriber ❤
I’m so glad to hear this!
no pressure but I'm checking everyday for new video
It’s coming very soon 😅
hi thank you so much for this tutorial, when I'm done with the masks and turn the opacity on the image placement layer and the track Matte back on the image is still not showing only the shape of it on the paper
You don't need to copy/paste color gradings or any effects if you create an adjustment layer and put it above the layer you're editing:)
True
I think the first way is overall the most efficient but every animator should try the 3rd method just to see the potential it holds and to know how it really works. Not a good idea to use plugins when you don't know how they work fundamentally.
Nice tutorial, can you use video footage with the plugin?
Can you please make a tutorial on how to do this matte stuff in the older versions of after effects 🙏👀❤️
Cuz track matte option has changed 🙏
Btw, You're a legend and U deserve more subscribers ❤
😂sooooooo cool🎉
😄
🤩🤩🤩
Always happy to see you comment ❤️
I'm finding this tutorial 😮😊
I am using collage pack but could not find the option of collage pictures. Can you tell me why is that? And by the way your videos are great. Keep up the good work.
Hey ik it sounds kinda odd but Im Using AE 2015 and there's a bit of a problem facing me it's on the image mask selection when i turn it into a mask it doesn't give the option of selecting from no matte to image mask but instead gives me the option of onle the layer of where the image placement is
i hope i'm not bothering thank u for a great content u put on
Hi mate, thanks for the tutorial. It's very helpful.
but I want to ask something, why if I slide the cursor to show the preview, the image placement was shown, but when I hit the play button to played the preview and rendering, my images was not showing? can you help me?
Awesome tutorial! I only have one question Which one would you use in Davinci Resolve?
Second one. But I’m going to explore it in more detail in the future… maybe I’ll make a follow up vid
We have found you, Give you the highest respect, we appreciate your professionalism. I hope to be of some help to you and hope that we will cooperate more in the future. Thank you so much!
hello brother i didn't know how to use collage pack i have the full one but i didn't know how to put my own photos in to it
Amazing Video! you're like Christopher Nolan Prefer to do Practical Effect then Digital😂👍👍
Haha 😂
And I was also wondering that can you make a similar tutorial about how @MagnatesMedia make his videos. Please.
how to make this rotation wiggle that u use on objects
Can anyone explain me that how can I turn this whole animation into MOGRT file, by which I can use it in premiere pro. I made up a mogrt file but it is not working properly. If anyone can help then please tell the properties which should I put up in the MOGRT?
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
In level 3 I'm at the 8:13 min mark of the video my After Effects 2022 only has Alpha Matte, Invert Alpha Matte, Luma Matte and Invert Luma Matte which one do I choose? Pls Help me.
Thank you for the lesson. I have a question: when I create a project and save it, then in my working project, when I need to use that effect, do I need to import that file (the paper folding project)? If so, what should I do if I want to create multiple object foldings into paper within one working project?
Actually yeah, you can just import the file and then duplicate the final composition (within the project window). I wish I covered that part better
In level 3, why don't we print the green color in front page and we just need to use key to remove it, and 0 saturation for the texture layer?
I would chose the real one cause if you chose the plug in and the template those who have keen eye will know for sure
