    Here's the thing. Black people aren't born knowing how to do their hair and white people aren't born knowing how to do their own hair either. As you grow up you become familiar with it and learn what works for you. A hairdresser generally specializes in a certain type of hair, though they can generally do all types. So a white person can do black hair if they get enough practice however a black person would likely be better since they have more experience personally and vice versa.

Although that would be ideal, most stylists only learn how to style hair above 3c. This is a dumb stereotype to debunk though because black people know if you go to a black barber shop, regardless of the barber's skin color they're there to cut/style black hair. I don't know many people that would doubt that.

      yes I know where you are coming from, but not all white hair is straight. There are a lot of different types of hair coming from many different races, even if their skin is fair.

    • @abbigayleford5811
      @abbigayleford5811 7 лет назад +4

      Willow Burger I agree with you. Doing hair has nothing to do with skin color and yes, people do have different hair textures but that doesn't mean they can't do others hair. It depends on the stylist you go to. I don't doubt people have gone in and it became a disaster because of their lack of experience but it's wrong to say an entire race can't do a type of hair because they're "inexperienced". Racism goes both ways and this video was very racist towards whites. Some of the following comments continue to prove my point, that being whites are discriminated too.

      Chloe Miranda you can be proper and still don't know to do a certain type of hair cause of experience and the demographic you cater to. A white person can do a black person who has Permed hair or lose curls. Doubt they can manage very kinky hair. My hair is too kinky so I wouldn't allow someone who doesn't have my hair type. If I was still Permed I would take my chances.

      Chloe Miranda They "should" be able to, but the fact that our hair texture is totally different than their own, most white stylists don't take the time to learn how to style our hair.
      It's not a bad thing, they're just not interested in learning a different texture than their own. We use different products, tools, and styling techniques. Therefore it's surprising when a white person knows how to style African American hair.

      Most people aren't trained to do all types which is why Black Hairstyling developed the way it has. It's one of the reason there is a separate market. White people can learn but it would take a conscious effort to do so. Odds are you're going to practice your technique on people you know which is more than likely going to be people from your own demographic. It's not malicious so much as oblivious. People who sit outside the mainstream will always have to do more to get their needs met. Try buying make-up for dark skin tones in Japan. Again it's not malice but if it's not something you use you probably don't think you need to have it.

    Im biracial and my mom learned to do my sister and my hair like a pro! I have friends whose moms are white and she can braid 2-4c hair amazingly and I have some black family members that can’t do cornrow and can’t handle natural hair.. it’s a “stereotype” just like ALL stereotypes!
    If you take the time to get familiar with different hair types & textures you can master it! That goes for EVERYTHING that people have linked to a specific race be it good or bad.. real people break those stereotypes down everyday and that what we need to focus on. Some people got mad about this video but it wasn’t a bad assumption it was something that a person that isn’t black or not surrounded by would automatically know how to do.. it takes learning and the amazing ones with God given talent💜💜💜

      Your wording is kind of one sided defensive, I can't really argue against it because it's enveloped in truth. So I'll just piggyback off of it.
      Generally speaking there are a lot of different textures and characteristics in hair. Different races have a more common type of hair, but obviously there's no absolutes in humans. Also, there is a huge difference between a hair stylist and a barber; a black barber and a non black barber; a black stylist and a non black stylist. Like in every field you're going to specialize in your intended or interested clientele's hair type. I have thin straight hair and have had my hair jacked up by the above variations, I've also had the best haircut done by some of the above variations.
      In conclusion, there is no thing as "just human hair".

Black models in the industry in another video on RUclips have complained about white stylists struggling to do their hair and their managers prompting them to shave it off. The makeup was a problem too. Of all the white stylists in the industry I hope the beautiful black models in referring to went to this celebrity stylist. She is brilliant and smart for learning about different types of hair. If I feel like it I’ll edit a link to the video I’m referring to. On a side note I’m still going to a black stylist since black people need support in the black business.

      I could walk up to almost any white person and they could give me a fade and they would know that I use pomade and a doorag for waves? And they know to cut with the grain on waves? I Highly doubt it.
      Them using the same person on each head. Let alone a specialist. Isn't representative of most white people. Gtfooh!
      As a matter of fact walk up to the next 5 random people from a different race and with different texture hair and ask them to cut and style. I Bet you would think twice.

The rules are the same for everybody. Like anything else in life you learn by doing, keep practicing and you'll get good at it.

Or try half way through then say they can’t do it, burn/rip your hair out or go run for their other coworker whose black or latina to help them. Hair schools need to start making it an requirement to be able to do all types of hair. If not, start paying people less based on their skill set.

    I think the message of this video is not ALL whites know how to deal with afro hair. We don't have natural straight hair, it's curly, and sometimes nappy. However, there are people of the Caucasian race that do know how to deal with our hair. So, saying "I wouldn't trust a white person with my hair etc etc" is very stereotypical. If they've gone to hair school, they probably would know how to do all types of hair.

      Anyone needs practice. Ofc MOST black people will have more practice but I mean if a white person is in an environment where they can practice and are around black people of course they can get really good at it. But the average white girl on the streets isn't gonna know how lol. I don't for sure I can't even do my own hair

    I’m at least glad to know there are some white stylist that exist that care about learning how to do textured /thick hair especially for the black community and honestly I see why the judges were skeptical of a white stylist doing a good job on a black woman’s hair because most white stylists don’t even try to learn how to do it so this makes me happy .

      @ericabertagnoli why because of the pressure? If *you're* a stylist, it would be your job to know about ALL types of hair. If it would really be your passion. You can't just tie one shoe and leave the other untied because of laziness.

I have to use LITERAL glue to lay my edges down and if I dont they won't leave the house with me. They just gonna stay upstairs and ain't no white person I know understand that struggle.

    All these people below being offended by the smallest of things "white people can't do black people hair."
    Damn son, you guys are hearing impaired.
    They never stated that "white people can't do black people hair," at all. If you actually watch the video they did say that they believe that white people can do black people hair and they can learn how to. And if you watch at the end, a white person did all the "contestants" (I guess you can say) It turned out good and they were impressed.
    All of those who are offended probably never came close to a black person's hair. The majority, (I know there's some people who have naturally straight hair) of them have super course, thick and curly hair. That hair type is completely different to a white person's hair. Yes, there are white people with curly hair but that hair type is still different from black people hair.
    And the reason why they made this video is because sometimes white hairdressers are ignorant to black people hair and don't know how to work their way around it and they don't know that treating black people hair is different than white people hair.

      kathryne wright It would be fine if they joked without the blackface. I don't know if you know this but blackface is a historical thing. Back when black people jazz and blues were getting big in America and during the times when black people had no rights at all, white people didn't really like black produced music because you know, they're black so they would do their own style of jazz and blues and perform with black paint on their face having intention of "being black" but just for entertainment. Blacks found that offensive
      Just think how blackface used back then was a way to mock the blacks and is still used today in a way to mock them .

      It’s understandable white hairstylist have a history of not knowing how to do black hair and Making black hair look bad. Skai Jackson’s mom had to do her hair on Jessie because all of the white stylist didn’t know how to do her hair and Taylor from high school musical had to have a head band to cover up the bad wig they gave her since they knew nothing about black hair and decided to not hire a black stylist

      Just a RUclipsr That is just a stereotype. My hair is long and thick as shit and it takes me about 2 hours to get it the way it should be. A lot of whites I know with even thin, straight hair have trouble with it because it gets frizzy and they can't do much without making it worse. Hair really is a pain in the butt for everyone

    • @justayoutuber2573
      @justayoutuber2573 6 лет назад +18

      kaitlin mendes But this isn't just about combing hair out. Black hair is completely different to straight hair. Since most hair schools teach you how to style straight hair (and straight hair is literally everywhere) you would expect people to know how to style it. Also I didn't say that white hair is pain free, just a lot easier to manage than kinky hair.

    • @kitkat-um5ri
      @kitkat-um5ri 6 лет назад +9

      Just a RUclipsr I never said it was only about combing it. Combing my hair is literally only the beginning. Trying to curl straight hair is also hard because the curls never stay unless you drench your hair in hairspray. And I also wanna add that not every caucasian has straight hair. Most of them actually don't; kinky waves make up a great fraction of our hair. Frizziness and puffiness are also huge downsides too.
