  • There's nothing Austin Gomez loves more than competing on the mat - but after battling concussions earlier in his career, he decided to stop wrestling.
After consulting with medical professionals, he was cleared to compete and decided to join Wisconsin Wrestling to do the one thing he loves most - wrestle.

Wrestle with your club full time, eat eat eat, let your body grow, lift weights, enjoy your young life and your sport, they are the best years of your life, if you win a title along the way great, if not no worries, it doesn't mean you weren't good. Wrestling is a martial art and will always be apart of who you are.

I live in Illinois and have watched Austin wrestle multiple times. His family is well respected in the wrestling community and known extremely well throughout the state of Illinois. So very happy to see Austin back in Wrestling but on his own terms. Cheering for you big guy!

Thank you for posting this story. Go Badgers! . Eating disorders are a problem in men's and women's sports. Concussions are not just a football problem. I am glad to see this athlete and these coaches work together on healthy goals, not just a win or even a title. Wrestling is a long-course development sport. Healthy development in the sport needs to start early and continue through the top levels of competition.

I know the Gomez family history and their coaches well, I actually work with one of the wrestling coaches. I wrestled throughout middle school and highschool (Westmont jr high, Hinsdale central HS, and west aurora HS) but nothing further than that. I currently live in carol stream, IL a few blocks from the glenbard Hs the Gomez family attended and I've dated/exclusively seen a member of the Gomez family. I've also visited the Gomez wrestling gym that was located in the Stratford mall.

    Hey Austin
Congrats on your victory on the mat and with your personal struggles. This is Coach Baethke. My wife and I were friends with your mom and dad back in the 90’s. I coached with your dad at Larkin H.S. In Elgin. I’m retired and live in FL. They can reach out to us through our daughter Brigette who he used to trampoline with.

Yeah, with 4 concussions already. The last thing he needs is to take repeated shots to the head Einstein.
