As a man, not many movies can make me cry, but this one managed to affect me in a truly remarkable way. I have to admit that when this song started playing, I knew what was coming and I cried. I hope many people will discover this movie in the future and experience something similar.
È vero, con il sentire di questa musica mi ha fatto capire la fine inevitabile del povero protagonista del film. Ho pianto tantissimo anche io. Un film che mi ha colpito tanto per la storia molto triste. Me lo ricorderò per tutta la vita. Gran film
I remember feelings so much sadness and crying so much. Another example that made me sob , because a scene stroked me when I wasn't expecting it, is a scene from a movie were a believe it's Val Kilmer, who portraits a distant father, says to is son "I love you" while he quickly takes over with is car.
Kemal Akar I'm not watching the movie right now. So, I wasn't angry until you reminded me. I can't get too angry, I guess...all these people have been dead for more than 200 years.
Posibly, one of the most perfect examples of music complementing image. Certainly, also one of the most deeply touching music pieces ever composed that suits so well this depiction of the human race brutality in front of the different ones. Sadly, very little has changed. Lynch's The Elephant Man and Samuel Barber as well as John Morris' original music scores are two great gifts for all music and movie fans of all time and will remain so for long.
After getting to know Joseph's life, I never call him "Elephant Man". He'll always be Joseph to me. I wish I knew you when you were alive. You would never have been alone and always loved.
I just went to see this at the Genesis cinema in Whitechapel. Just around the corner is the house where Joseph Merrick lived for a time. Not far from the Royal London Hospital. I hadn't seen this film for over twenty years and had forgotten what a beautiful and tragic movie it was. The entire audience was sniffling throughout. I've never had such an emotional reaction for such a sustained period throughout a film. What an experience. Amazing cast and crew that brought this sad tale of humanity to life. A true gem. John Hurt was truly robbed of his Oscar. Rip.
I heard this piece while watching "The Elephant Man" back in 1980. I've been unable to get it off of my mind since. It is so haunting and was an excellent choice for the movie's musical score. It's the rising angst and loss that is so clear here. You can feel the years passing with greater pain... with moments of hope. I doubt there will ever be another piece of music that has affected me like this one. It may sound dramatic, but it's true.
Very good note from you. I suggest Mihaly Vig “Valuska” and “Oreg” from the Béla Tarr masterpiece “Werckmeister Harmoniak”. Talking about haunting pieces of musical art.
Beautiful movie watched it on BBC4 last night after not seeing it for many years, such a wonderful human being in spite of his cruel treatment he wasn't bitter.Glad he got to die in dignity not in a cold circus cage.
Not a single death on screen until the end, yet exposes the worst of what human beings are capable of. From so long ago not in our lifetime yet it feels like we all are capable of doing wrong to him. A spotlight on the worst in us all, and as ugly as any deformity.
A beautiful music piece to accompany a beautiful movie about an inspiring & remarkable man. A man who despite being treated like an animal, was very intelligent, kind and gifted in so many ways. It wouldn't matter what age he was born in - the world continues to disrespect those who look different. But the 'different' people are the most extraordinary - RIP Joseph Merrick :)
Tis true my form is something odd but blaming me is blaming God. Could I create myself anew I would not fail in pleasing you. If I could reach from pole to pole or grasp the ocean with a span I would be measured by the soul. The minds and standards of a man. God bless you Joseph Merrick
Charly Welter a lot happier now that he is reunited with people that were important to him in his life like his mother and Frederick Treves as well as people who suffered like him but can now be at peace
I'm glad you put this quote on here Mark. It's beautiful. I had not heard it before. I read that Merrick used the rhyme and also wrote "the story of his life" in a sideshow pamphlet which was used as a kind of advertisement. His real life story wasn't quite the same as it was in the movie, but he did suffer... and terribly.
I remember this song from Homeworld (the video game) I was surprised to see this song in the movie (happily surprised!) It even fits the movie better. Such a perfect sad song. Actually, it's not that bad for Homeworld too. People trying to find their home.. in a way, the Elephant man also wanted that...
Rest in peace Joseph Merrick. You are free from all your pain, and sitting at the feet of our Lord and savior. And you are finally getting the love that you never recieved in life. You were a beautiful soul that was given a crappy life. Yet you rose above it. I know that you are at peace now
This music is at the same time so beautiful and so sorrowful....not only the soundtrack for The Elephant Man but also Platoon...just devastatingly beautiful
When I saw elephant man and he died in the end with Adagio for strings playing it made cry in the theatre's, amazing movie and music, o will never forget that night
Joseph Merrick , your spirt is in the clouds , your mother is with you , **Rest in peace Joseph Merrick** and John Hurt , you are a great actor , the best actor on i have never seen , **Rest in peace John Hurt**
I never be able to watch this movie twice... I t is a real story and makt 200% more difficult to watch when you know that the end is 100% what really happened.
A wonderful story about a man looking to be accepted for nothing more then a human being. It was a honor to read Mr. Merrick lifes journey. I highly recommend everyone take the time to see beyond a persons appearance and into their soul..
ur an inspiration to me ur beautiful rip legend and always will be and let's Start to show respect to everyone who has any form of disability can't stand people who disrespect
If I had time travel powers, I would go back in time and give him a hug. I would probably break down, but I would not care. And say, "You are a great gifted person, you are a true human being."
Well i think if he was actually like in the movie and if he could move like in the movie and speak, then i think i would actually give him a hug.. but i still would be scared as fuck, but i would never mistreat him or so.. i would just be scared
Thank you for posting this wonderful piece of music which reflects the human suffering and compassion of the life of Joseph (John) Merrick, known as the Elephant Man.
I’d like to think Joseph is with Jesus Christ now. He’s one that I know that deserves to be in the kingdom of heaven. Though he walked in fire he came out unscathed. He’s heart was made of gold. You’ll always be remembered not because of your disfigurement but for being the kind hearted man you were. Your name is not the elephant man, your name is Joseph Merrick. R.I.P my beautiful soul. You will always be forever remembered.
We find this sublime music in "Platoon" which is a major work of American cinema. Of course, "Elephant man" is just as much. The director was able to immerse us in Victorian England with virtuosity, and shooting this film in black and white was a brilliant idea. Apart from that, I would like to see the heads of the morons who had the gall to disliker such a beautiful composition. French lyrics! ! 🙋☺❤ Vendredi 8 Février 2019, 11h22
I've loved this song since I first saw this movie. I wore out Barber's lp playing it over & over. Why is it that so many 'beautiful' people are ugly & rotting on the inside & so many 'ugly' people are the kindest & most gentle people who ever were.
Joseph Merrick, your spirit is free now, free from the pain and suffering.
are you still alive ?
As a man, not many movies can make me cry, but this one managed to affect me in a truly remarkable way. I have to admit that when this song started playing, I knew what was coming and I cried. I hope many people will discover this movie in the future and experience something similar.
I bought the 40th anniversary edition on bluray recently its an amazing film. One of the best films of the 1980s
I Am Sam will also make ya cry
I agree a very moving story about a man who lived has much as possible with so much against him.
È vero, con il sentire di questa musica mi ha fatto capire la fine inevitabile del povero protagonista del film. Ho pianto tantissimo anche io. Un film che mi ha colpito tanto per la storia molto triste. Me lo ricorderò per tutta la vita. Gran film
Incredible movie and actors, i felt exactly the same way. We can see the power of music 😢
“I am not an Elephant I am not an Animal I am just a Human being”
-Joseph Carey Merrick
1862 - 1890
I'm not an elephant. I'm not an animals. I'm a human. 😭😭😭
I'm crying.
In all my 45 years, this is the only film that has ever brought me to tears. So powerful.
I remember feelings so much sadness and crying so much.
Another example that made me sob , because a scene stroked me when I wasn't expecting it, is a scene from a movie were a believe it's Val Kilmer, who portraits a distant father, says to is son "I love you" while he quickly takes over with is car.
Watch the passtion of the christ film that will make you cry . Directed by mel Gibson
Same here
Man, I remember getting so angry at the people who mistreat this poor guy the first time I watched it...
Kemal Akar I'm not watching the movie right now. So, I wasn't angry until you reminded me.
I can't get too angry, I guess...all these people have been dead for more than 200 years.
I got in here because my heart full of sadness and sorrowfulness for my beloved dad who passed away since 6month ago

that broke my hearth
They are monsters! they aren't humans

If I'm not mistaken, Joseph used to sit in a certain chair and listen to violin music. I wonder what he would have thought of this beautiful piece.

Thanks for making a masterpiece, David Lynch.
This is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard in my life.
Joseph was a man...God saw him as a man...if he only knew how much his Father in Heaven loved him.😊😊😢😢
He does . He is sitting at God's feet, feeling all the love he never got in life.
R.I.P Joseph Merrick
I always loved this song, so sad yet so beautiful...perfect.
When I listen to it, I never want it to stop. This is so powerful and inspiring. A masterpiece.
movie is masterpiece , music is perfect.

what a beautifull original soundtrack my goddddd!
Capolavoro absoluto la.scena finale e cosi toccante che piango.sempre incredibile film
If you ever wanted a story that showed humanity like Oscar Shindler the story of John Merrick is a great example
In both cases their humanity is evident due (and highly contrasted) to the lack of humanity surrounding them
La meilleur composition pour le cinéma , elle me rend tellement triste à l’écoute
l'un des des plus beaux film 😥
This beautiful 🌹 song will be played at my funeral xx😴
This, Platoon, and Amelie are the films that come to my mind when hearing this.
