I’m completely on Ludwig’s side on the end, he’s completely right. It’s very different because he is a much larger percentage of French than most Americans when they say something like “Oh I’m Italian”. I have Italian and Irish heritage, but I don’t call myself Irish or Italian because I’m like 3rd generation American
Yeah and it is a very common thing for people to get annoyed about. Like she's making it sound like he came up with this, when I've heard this exact complaint from dozens of people. Also it is 100% different if you're first generation and have regularly visited the country and family, vs. you giving your whole percentage break down even though you have no connection to the countries, anyone there, or the cultures at all
yeah, Lud actually has a point here, Big difference between someone who actually has a cultural connection with another country and some American who's never even stepped foot outside the state in which they were born and have no cultural connection to any place other than America.
yeah i'm a 6th generation migrant and i just can't understand why my mum did a dna test to find out "oh hey turns out like 200 years ago your ancestors were in the two islands that we already knew that i'm descended from". like why do you care, you're more malaysian than irish since you actually spent some of your childhood there.
@@pelasion5099I think a lot of people in the comments are confusing second gen with first gen pls referring to ludwig as first gen, I think the sentiment still stands though.
Nah lud is right. If you're so far removed from your heritage you only have random percents and you don't even know where you're from then it doesn't really matter. But if you're first generation and or your family is keenly aware of their culture and where they come from and are raised on that it's a different story. Like my dad was a first generation american from two swedish parents and they used to go over and have met their cousins etc before and are pretty immersed in swedish stuff. But like even tho I do sweedish stuff every so often I don't really do much of anything with it or even particularly care about it so I wouldn't really refer to myself as like super sweedish or anything. Where as I have cousins (my dad's sisters kids) who are pretty much all danish citizens also and have spent a lot of time on Sweden and Denmark (their father is a first gen from Denmark) and being Danish is absolutely part of their culture and who they are. Like it really really depends on how many roots you even have to your past or how even involved or not you are. Like if you're some random guy in NY who's 15% Irish and doesn't know anything about Ireland or it's culture you really shouldn't be calling yourself Irish imo.
true, my dad's side of the family is german american, but i don't have any kinda connection to that because neither of my parents were born outside of the u.s. although my family wants me to learn german so bad lmao

I agree with ludwig at the end, he is very rooted in his heritage and his genes are going to swing on that side.
