Exploring Cairo, Illinois

- Exploring the historic dying town of Cairo, Illinois. Cairo sits at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers at Illinois' southernmost point. Racial unrest and extreme economic decline caused Cairo to shrink to a fraction of its former population throughout the last century, and it continues to shrink more every year. The town is filled with dilapidated and condemned buildings and lots where now demolished homes and business once stood. The residents still living in Cairo struggle with disproportionately higher rates of poverty and unemployment compared to the rest of the state. This is probably the most depressing walk I've done so far.

This is a really awesome video. I was born in Cairo in 1957. I lived on 37th street. Down the street from the Bell gravestone place. I haven’t been back there since 1975. Really sad but also good to see a lot of the historical buildings and mansions still there. Magnolia manor is my favorite. I have no family in Cairo now. I still have many photos and lots of great memories there. I now live in Chicago south suburb of Matteson. So weird how no people are out anyplace outside. Thanks for taking time to walk and make this nice video. I really appreciate it. Makes me want to go down there again and see it myself . Thanks so much. Loved it.
Thanks for sharing your story. I am happy you enjoyed the video. I can't imagine what it's like to see your hometown undergo such a transformation.
Racism fucked up cairo
Do you know and Gill that live there
Buildings and no people ....very eerie.
Back in the days my grandma and grandpa drove though cario to get to their house in Kentucky and my grandma use to bring us to cario to visit our family members I remember walking these same roads so much has changed
There's 6 inches of snow outside and I just went for a walk through Cauro, IL on a warm sunny day! Thank you! Priceless...
Sad to see all those Businesses are closed down Sycamore street & downtown. The Gem theatre looked like an interesting place back in the day. So fitting the tombstone shop seemed to be the one Business thriving !
Water is a "Money magnet." I'm a real estate investor, and Cairo could position themselves as a prosperous town because of their of the fact that they're near so much water (it's situated between not 1, but 2 major bodies of water). The architecture of these beautiful buildings being renovated would also do wonders!
Water is usually a "money magnet," but not where welfare freeloaders outnumber fed-up taxpayers. Cairo is a cautionary tale.
It would help if they had jobs there
in April 2011, it came down to a choice of whether to flood Cairo, or some Missouri farmland (spring runoff and heavy rain). Coulda gone either way, but the decision came down to flood the farmland. I'd be skeptical of investing in a town that came that close to oblivion. Water, in this case, isn't a good thing.
@@Kenny-re8koGood point. Point taken...
@@bscottb8 okay. Well give the 'welfare freeloaders' bus tickets to your town, and let them try the job market in your hood. Why keep em in towns or areas of the big cities with 40% unemployment?
Virtually a whole hour & not a single pedestrian seen walking. Big difference from the 80's to now alone driving through there from St. Louis on our way to Kentucky & Tennessee, childhood to now.
My husband's grandmother and grandfather use to live there back in the day and are buried there. Seems strange not to see any people except driving through.
Wow! I wish I could have seen what it used to look like back then.
Do you know any cross or gill residents that live there
That's because I don't think there are any people there Ghost Town
Looks like somebody's taking care of those places grass is mowed bushes trimmed Building looks good
Thanks for showing the signs so I know what the building are or were.
Does Cairo still have a mayor, city council, city maintenance, police, & fire dept.? I know they don't have any grocery stores, but they do have a Dollar General store that's still open. They still have some nice old mansions that look well kept, are they still occupied?
What do you know you can always find a Dollar General Store
"We won the battle but we lost the war" as spoken by one of the last remaining black residents.
Do you know any cross or gill there
@@aaronscott4645 No....

Some commentary would be nice. As I’m not from and have never been to Cairo it would be nice to know what the history is and what I’m looking at. Looks like a nice town though
theres a documentary on youtube called "between two rivers" about cairo and its history. i think the channal is "nick jordan"
This town has horrible history
Not a soul on the streets.
Too early. Look at the shadows from the sun
33:01 That house is gorgeous; and the property, too. Actually, the whole street is pretty good.
My grandmother lived on 36th.
When did they install the new street lamps? nice!
We just spent our Sunday evening watching this. Thank you! Our favorite part was the strip club and hotel filled with tires
Granny lived on 34t.and you walked past it..aaaargh
You should do a video on time Beach Missouri course there's no Town left it all to really shoot a video on
The Town and Towns like this should give away property to anyone willing to rebuild it .
A good movie to be made escape from Cairo
cairo needs leadership and investors willing to take a huge risk.
They probably have dollar generals in HELL!
Love 1330
That must be a drive through town
I tried for 20 years to help clean up this town. In the early 2000 the mayor would take the money and use it on rams , cardinals games
Well at least there's a few nice houses left
It's CAIRP
I am Legend
I was going to buy these building and tear them down but I couldn't get any help from the city
Why?
Why?
