I live in Indonesia on a specific Karo ethnic, there was a societal knowledge (I would not say this was a tradition) that it was common in the past that mothers worked more hardly than the fathers in the farm to support the family. Even today, if a wife and a husband works in society influenced by our ethnic, it is okay. Ask any Karo you meet, the ones with last name Ginting, Peranginangin, Tarigan, Karo-karo, and Sembiring (they are our head mergas/clans), I am sure most of them confirm my observation.
Different culture, different tradition. I am a Westerner and I really prefer the girl to keeps as the role of the girl and rely on me. I don't really like this bullshit equality of gender, so far I only see a higher rate of divorce and more people living in poverty. This equality doesn't work in our society's economy.
It's partly down to statistics. Due to the one child policy many girls get aborted so there are now way more men than women. Therefore the women can be even more picky than they usually would.
Well.. the stats are like 112/100 (if I recall well). And since the one child policy doesn't exist anymore, the difference between men and women are going to be lessen more and more. I don't think Chinese women want to be dependant on their partner, but just getting all the benefits from their partner's wealth while still being independant so they can leave whenever they want.
"We're making magic happen" perfectly describes how these dating shows are. You can say almost anything, regardless of how unnecessarily dramatic the questioning is, and despite the fakeness on the show from EVERYONE, the non-character actors were even more fake. Even her profile picture was 10x better looking than reality! Classic.
I told them I had an ex-girlfriend who moved to France for school. They made me change the story to "my girlfriend moved to France for school. I went to pick her up at the airport when she came home for Chinese New Year and she got off the plan with her new French boyfriend. I was so sad!" Guess French people stealing American guys girlfriends makes for good TV!
