Spain was not ruled by the Muslims for that long. Only a small portion of land was still in Muslim hands by Cervantes’ birth.

Yo he leído tésis y análisis críticos de El ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha, así que tengo los antecedentes históricos de Cervantes o " El manco de Lepanto" muy conocidos y me fascina la idea de las metanarrativas , el humor y la profundidad filosófica de esta extraordinaria novela . Aunque sé que me va a gustar al tratar de leerla el lenguaje se me hace tan difícil y espeso , pero con lo que haz hablado de ella me da muchas ganas y talvez leyéndolo simultáneo con un buen audiolibro pueda que se me haga el lenguaje más accesible.

I would love to read Don Quijote but I'm such a slow reader it would probably take me 3 years lol. We did read a small exxtract for Spanish class in high school but that's it :)
Do you think the translation would be better in English or French?

I don't know any of the translations that exist, but since French is closer to Spanish (both being Romance languages), if I were you I would probably read it in French.
