  • The early Final Fantasy games were my main jams growing up. I lost count of how many times I finished the original game, and probably played through it on just as many different systems.
I bought my PS1 in college for the express purpose of playing 7.
I always loved the pixel art, of which this book is nothing but!
Sadly there's a few omissions here and there, but it's a well presented journey through nostalgia.
While the book is predominantly focused on the early games, it would've been cool to have a lot of the updated sprites from some of the offshoot games like Brave Explorers or the Tactics series, which have just as much sprite work as the older games, if not more in some cases.
I guess there's always room for a sequel!

The 2018 version is the Pixel Remaster collection they made for 1-6 for PC later released onto the Nintendo Switch

It makes sense there was a game coinciding with something like this.
I've been thinking of the switch one as it is.

I grew up with Final Fantasy the same way. I used to play through the first Final Fantasy every year until the early 2000's, then I slowed down to every half a decade or so. I picked up the Pixel Remasters off of Steam and have been streaming my play through if the first one, but most excitingly I'll finely be able to play a remaster of FF3 that pixel instead of 3D.

Didn't they redo some on the 3DS? I seem to vaguely recall that. Also on the PSP I think. Maybe that's where I replayed the earlier games? And didn't they redo some for the gameboy advance while I think about it?
I've honestly lost track at this point of how many times I've played through the first six games on various systems.

The most common remake of FFIII is the 3DS style where they changed it to a 3D game and gave the four onion kids origins and personalities. This Steam release is closer to the Famicom version, but it's updated to the 16bit style graphics like they did with the first two.

I don't know if you noticed, but the pixel remasters were apparently inspired by this book (many of the sprites used here appear in the remasters).

I believe they did another anthology for PS1, that had 1, 2, &3 (the japanese 1,2,3). I think I have it? Like you, I really dug the first one, and 4/2 Blew my mind! What I got from reading the strategy guides to 2 & 3 (from Japan) was that they added in character classes, that became classes like the named characters in 4. So like summoners, dark knights, etc.

Final Fantasy character classes changed how I looked at fantasy tropes for a long time. Thankfully modern fantasy art is getting an interesting blend of influences, but in the 90s when things were EXTREME it was indeed a dire situation.
Shining Force was another big one for me. Nobody could beat a Shining Force werewolf!
