You are lucky to have purchased it at Pep Boys, instead of Tractor Supply Company as I did. I received my first email telling me that I had four days to pick it up at the store. I then drove across town to do so, only to find the customer service person said it had not come in. She said she would call me when it did. Two days later I had not received a call from her, but I received another email saying this time that I only had two days to pick it up or it would be returned. Again I loaded up and drove across town to pick it up, only to again be told it was not in. I pitched a fit and one of the guys then asked me to come with him to the back stock room and he would let me see for myself that it was not there. Well, guess what, it was. Got it loaded up and worked today in reassembly. So far I have only found one extra washer and nothing not there, but we shall see. Of course, all the nuts and bolts were loose in the large cardboard box the hoist came in. So far, my biggest frustration is putting on those casters where you really have to reach inside the tubing to get the nut and washer on. My fingers must be shorter than your's, as I simply can't reach back that far and will have to use some long necked pliers or something to finish securing them. Same cost at TSC for this hoist, but also the same type of frustrations, too.
A tool shop near me was going out of business and i bought a 1 ton one of these for 80 bucks. only thing ive been lifting with it is an iron block lsx (520ish? lbs) and it does fine with that. i didnt plan on pulling big blocks with trans attached etc etc so i figured 80 bucks was a sweet price for a foldable hoist. i have a small shop and it fits in a tiny little corner between my toolboxes so its perfect for me. id recommend it if youre not trying to lift heavy things.
Yeah I've used a 1 ton HF hoist before. It would reach but that thing was flexing big time while only lifting a 4 cylinder Volvo engine. I'll more than likely do quite a bit to this hoist to strengthen it up. I'd like it to be able to handle 3 ton if possible. We'll see how well it handles these couple jobs I need it for first.
I just bought the same crane at pep boys last week and used the $20 off coupon. Not a bad crane for $159. Half the nuts and washers were loose in the box. Luckily they were all there.
Hey man, looks like youve pulled a few engines before, my question is i got a chevy suburban and i wanted to know if a normal engine hoist like this one will lift an engine high enough to get it out of my truck? thanks ps its not lifted or anything, stock height
I saw that thread where the arm bent. I think it was probably stored in the 1-1/2 ton position because the legs were also folded up. I wonder if he was putting that dressed 454 & trans in his truck with the arm all the way out
I think a big part of the problem with this hoist is the company selling it. The Harbor freight 2 ton hoist and this one don't seem much different at all. Matter of fact it wouldn't shock me if they were made in the same Chinese factory like many other Chinese made tools are. This is very common. I haven't had a chance to do a metal comparison but I do plan on heading to HF today. If I remember I'll measure the metal thickness and do a follow up video.
I would still buy this one again simply based on price. It's WAY cheaper and looks to be the same build quality. The only two things that may make this a lessor tool would be metal thickness, chain strength, and the ram. I have no way of judging the chain and hook but I will at some point compare metal thickness and check to see how many ton the HF ram is. This one only have a 2 ton ram. That's good and bad. It shouldn't over work the hoist and break it. But will it last? Only time will tell.
Yeah you're lucky. I had a few missing. I made do with that I had but still had to go back to the store to get nut and a washer that I didn't have. They gave them to me.
I came upon your video because for my first welding project I wanted to build one of these... Im not a novice to welding btw, With the cost of metal now do you still think it's too expensive to build one from scratch? ill be using an 8 ton long ram jack... I'm planning to lift a ford 302 small block into my '88 ranger and also use it to remove the bed to clean the chassis... Extra metal will be used for other projects so nothing will go to waste, please give me some input if you can. TYIA!
I see that hf has their 2 ton version, and pepboys has this one, which one will i better off. Ive seen their have many complains on this one like back in 2006, wouldnt it be enough time for the manufacture to correct some of the problems by now(not all).
This stuff sucked putting everything together. I brought the Engine stand too and this too from Pepboys. Just like you said not the best quality but it will get the job done. The Big Red stuff is usually the worst quality automotive equipment I've ever used but a quality stand is so expensive I couldn't justify buying one to pull a motor or two. I'd rather dump that cash in stuff I use every day like a good compressor and air tools to match. Even with the crappy BIG RED made in china stuff the quality on the Hoist and Stand was by far better than their other stuff. Their car jacks are garbage!
It performs good enough. I've lifted quite a bit with this. Engines, transmissions, and The bass of an ambulance box, the rear end of a tow truck with the help of a floor jack. Both where struggling quite a bit on their own. Nothing has bent or broken yet. Is it the best quality? Not at all. But it will do the job and outside of the issues I had with Pep Boys I've gotten my money's worth out of it.
More than likely reach. The reality when using these is that it might be rated for 2 ton but rarely will it be able to reach at this setting. It all depends on the car you are working on. I'll be able to use the 2 ton rating on my pathfinder because I cut the whole front end off of it. But is I hadn't I'd have to use the 1.5 ton setting or maybe even the 1 ton setting for reach. That's why no one should ever buy a 1 ton hoist. Your actual usable rating will be far less.
Or you just could of found & buy a used old school thick Engine Hoist & bought a new 8 or 12 Ton ram Jack. I have both the new 2 Ton folding shop crane & a very Heavy Duty old school 2 Ton shop crane that doesn't fold only the legs extends out.
i just came back from pep boys with high interest of getting the 1 ton to remove a small block from my chevy. Shitty customer service my god. Lost complete interest bc of that. Thanks for the video
funny i am a welder also LOL 62 old fart , they will hold , every one uses a mig now days and call themselves a welder? ouch!thanks for the vid ,,,cert 7018 all pos,
bug Den ,absolutely right , those welds will hold. i think its more about vanity. i am collecting up pieces to build one now , it's something about building things, even to use it once. it will be mine and strong.

Sir even I need a 2 ton crane for my workshop. How much does it cost and how much does it weigh??

Not without a struggle but yes if you're willing to work around the hight issues. Becareful though.

I bought a 1 ton one before. It wasn't even long enough to pull an engine out of a Honda Accord. The 2 ton one I have now is much better.
Harbor freight does have a 2 ton. I purchased one and the release valve failed. Luckily my engine wasn't on it yet

There is no way you could build one for the same price. Sure if you build one it would be better but really how often will you be using it?

Why not put it on 2 ton position? Anyreason with the guy with bbc.
I guess I appreciate the review about the missing bolts. But, maybe lift something heavy and see how it performs?

And no body really needs to pull a motor out with the transmission attached...that's why they make transmission jacks for.
Yeah something don't seem right with that situation at all. I'm betting it was all his fault.

I agree with you 100%100

Yeah don't buy that one ton. I wouldn't trust that at all. And their customer service is terrible. It's like the Walmart of auto part stores.
