    Here's the thing when someone says they don't like a certain artist (Adding onto the first bad take that Kanye West isn't good.) Most of the time, it's either they don't have a good reference point to jump into an artist and understand where they're coming from artistically, or they are just lazy to do the work and are closed minded. I was a diehard rock/metal fan before I started getting into hip-hop/rap. But rock even to this day is my reference point. In order to transition into the hip-hop/rap realm I had to get into artists that helped me transition into that understanding. For me coincidentally that was the Grammy's performance with Imagine Dragons & Kendrick. Somehow down the grapevine of getting into the genre I finally started getting into Kanye, despite me always hearing him on the radio. Yeezus especially was a great transition point of my understanding.
    Another important factor that helps me understand an artist is knowing their backstory. 99% of the time if I didn't like an artist it's usually because I didn't know their backstory yet either through investigation or watching various video essays on them. So liking and getting into an artist really does depend on reference point, and how much the individual is willing to accept something different that they're not yet used to. I remember countless times when I was getting into certain artists having a feeling that I initially didn’t like what I was hearing because it was so different, but knowing deep down there was something there, something I was missing. So I’d often force myself to keep listening and digging until I understood and liked it. Nowadays I refer to this feeling as being on the same wavelength. Once that switch in your mind clicks, when it goes “Oh, now I get where this artist is coming when they make this type of music”, it’s much easier to listen to their music because you’re coming at it from an angle where you can understand and appreciate it. Of course it does take a lot of time commitment and understanding, but if you really like and are curious about the artist it shouldn't feel like work.
    Using this type of thinking when getting into artists has really allowed me to broaden my music taste over the past few years, and fully appreciate the importance of an artists work, as well as their certain place within music’s history and niches.

      Agree. When I first started listening to rap (Biggie, Wayne, etc), I disliked many rap artists like Kendrick, DOOM, etc without ever listening to them, let alone the 'mumble' rappers as well. It was ignorance and unwillingness to accept. Then I realized it was pointless to hate on them & now I'm huge fans of Kdot, DOOM, Uzi, 21 Savage, etc

    • @Abibiabobo
      @Abibiabobo 2 года назад +1

      I agree with u, liking new artists and new music to u depends on reference points and getting used to these new sounds. And as u said, it takes a lot of commitment on your part as a listener to really start accepting this new taste let alone loving it, and tbh I suffer a lot with these points even though I'm aware of them, I find it really difficult to start liking genres that haven't appealed to me in the past even though I try all the time to get used to them.

    The worst take for me was the Invasion of Privacy one. The other ones were from every day people that may or may not have been trolling. Rolling Stone is a major music publication outlet that supposedly prides itself on keeping the integrity of music alive for their consumers. What made the take even worse was that it was a collective/consensus opinion, not just one writer with an extreme bias towards Cardi. A group of people that get paid to write about and critique music really came together and agreed that Invasion of Privacy was a better rap record than Illmatic (using influence as the criteria as if Illmatic isn't arguably the most influential record of all time). It could be due to baiting for engagement like Luc said, which is sad considering they should't have to succumb to click bait material given their already global reach.

    I would even argue that Rap is rythmically (I hate this word) more interesting than most genres, and far more versatile than rock for example. In Rock you will always hear a guitar, live drums and a base guitar, but in rap you can include violins, also guitars, synths and etc. Rap is far more boundless. And since 50 Cent it became normal to incorparate melodic elements in delivery, and those melodies are literally harmonizing with the melodies within the instrumental, so there you have your "3 core elements of music" And when it comes to lyrics rap is far more dense than other genres, making it lyrically more valuable. Rap might not be music theoretically complex as other genres, but complexity doesn't equal being good. I would even argue that it's far more impressive that Rap achieved such mainstream success, while being this "simple" or rather while focusing on the most important parts of what makes a song good.

    • @JMartinJ
      @JMartinJ 2 года назад +4

      People will trash on Hip Hop for being "simple" but will praise The Beatles for making songs like Yellow Submarine and Oblidabla which have like 3 chord progressions lolol. Playing an instrument doesn't make music any more complex

      I love rap and I also love rock since I grew up on it. But your comment leads me to believe you haven’t listened to much rock other than what’s in the mainstream to be forming an opinion like this. Saying you’ll always hear guitar, bass, and drums in rock is like saying you’ll always hear someone spitting over a beat in rap. That’s what differentiates the genres. Rock can also contain strings, synths, and a wide variety of experimentalism much like rap can

    I think a very true statement is that Kanye is not a good rapper and performer, the only thing he's good at is sound selection, production and genre bending, and he's influence is known only because he kept repeating it, that's a classic PR model, ye brainwashed you into stans 💀

    Also Ben Shapiro: "Listening to Mozart. That some people listen to rap rather than Mozart is objective proof that some people are stupid."
    I don't think one can get any more pretentious than that when it comes to music unless they've time traveled from the late 1700's. Also like people from the 1700's, he's pretty much showing he's racist without explicitly saying it.
