How to refret a Guitar

  • A good leveling and maintenance of the frets is very important for all kinds of guitars and string instruments. It affects how comfortable they are to play, how much buzzing or unwanted noise they make and, consequently, how the instrument sounds.
    In this video you can see me changing the frets of a Japanese Hondo electric guitar. Even though it’s a Les Paul-type guitar, it has a screw-on neck, making my job so much easier!

    I'm in a bad spot: I bought a cheap Squier Affinity Tele so I could practice things like re-fretting and it's so cheap...if it goes wrong it's not a big issue. Only problem is, the thing is such a good guitar, it became my No.1 and I can't bring myself to refret it in case I balls it up.

    Lot of comments on how difficult this is, but I refretted two acoustics that were completely unplayable due to severely worn frets, and it's not that bad. Taking the frets out is easy with a soldering iron and fret puller. You can buy pre-cut frets. Radius doesn't have to be perfect because they'll conform to your neck radius when you install them. Pound them in gently with small mallet/hammer. Get a straight piece of wood or a leveler and sand the frets until level. Done. If you don't know how to set a guitar up, a pro can do that, but you'll save big $ by not having to get a fret job.

      What’s the soldering iron for?

    • @andreww1613
      @andreww1613 3 года назад +18

      @@mikechernov7342 It's to heat the fret which melts/loosens the glue holding the fret in. It takes a few minutes on each fret. You should not have to pull with the fret "puller". When the glue is loose the fret puller will just pop the fret out. If you pull the fret out with any force you're guaranteed to damage the fretboard.

      If you lightly solder the top of the fret, it really helps with heat transfer. I use a good aluminum 2' level for my straightedge and adhere sandpaper to it with 2 sided tape. As long as you sand more or less in parallel with the edge of the fretboard it works well.

    To refret by yourself remember 3 things. 1. be sure to get the fingerboard well radiused after you pull the frets...it's important so you can seat the frets well. 2. Radius the fret wire well to the fingerboard. 3. Use fret wire that's .055 or .057 the first 5 or 6 times. You will take off much more then you have to the first 5 to 10 times you refret, Have extra fret to remove when leveling so you don't get them too low. There are evo frets that have a medium length tang, .055 height and .090 width fret. They work well. If you have big enough slots and don't mind very wide frets use a .057 / .110 for starters.

    • @iplayloud2
      @iplayloud2 2 года назад +4

      @ navy graves: I said the same thing myself . Unless I really sit there by even not even a really crapy piece of ship guitar. Say go out and buy a even very inexpensive and it may have flaws but guitar kit And teach yourself how to do something like this It makes all the sense. You just can't lunge into anything like this half ass. It's not that it's ImpossibleIt's just a matter of tackling it and then realizing you may come across an issue and that's one of the big scary parts. Rip apart even a guitar like an epiphone , Squire or any other And it's almost a pity. Go buy a guitar kit would just simply by a neck cheap by some fret board Get the frets by the glue and some basic tools and play around. Build it rip it apart build that rip it apart build that rip it apart. What I still take a chance on an epiphone Squire or any other forget an actual Fender Gibson Jackson etc But I wouldn't be pulling apart any guitar that you buy over all outside That's why it works To bring a to those who know what they're doing. But learning how to do it why not

Just follow the steps, take your time and you'll thank yourself for acquiring this skill in the future. You don't need any overpriced equipment and contrary to all the fear mongering (from people who probably still believe you need professional assistance to adjust a truss rod) you can absolutely do this yourself. @@TruthSurge gluing is such a bad idea, and until recent years with the development of poymer glues and ca, it's not used traditionally. Laarger manufacturers aren't doing that.

    I fucked up big time, I have a guitar that has a really bowed neck, I thought that straightening it as much as possible then leveling would maybe fix the relief, but I ended up with micro frets lmao. I’ve got washers coming in to help the neck straighten, and I’m gonna try leveling again, but I think I might have to learn how to re fret a guitar now..

    The buffing wheel at the end would give it a feel I couldn't get doing it DIY...unless I have a buffing wheel which I don't. I've leveled and recrowned frets, it's a bit tedious for a layman.

    I'm thinking about refreting my first guitar which dates from around 2001-2003. It's a shitty GK guitar (cheap model from china or somewhere that sells in some shops in Quebec) my frets are really too thin, she always sounded bad but plays really well anyway, doesn't stay in tune 100%. what nut would you recommend. Also what are the grits of paper you are using and what's the oil you put on for finishing. I'm no professional but I still know a lot about woodworking and have have a lot of tools.

    • @Paoson_Woodworking
      @Paoson_Woodworking  4 года назад

      hello mate, changing the nut may not solve those problems, but if you are going to change it you can use Mikarta. You should end with P800 sandpaper. There are several oils in the market, but I use this homemade one:

    Okay, it looks very time consuming for sure (which makes it expensive), but not really rocket science. Refretting a guitar is very expensive... Two of my guitars cost me less money than what refretting them would cost. The fret bender that he used here is actually a very expensive tool, if one even needs it. As are the tang nippers. I think I'd first try to borrow those tools and refret my cheapest guitar to see how that goes... My acoustic has bad frets, probably made of too soft metal too. Stainless steel frets would be interesting to try as they should be harder and thus have better durability. Great video by the way!

    Muy buen trabajo, se ve te gusta lo que haces. Me gustaría tu opinión, le hicieron un retrasteo a mi guitarra tipo strato, pero parece que lijaron el diapasón sin soltar el alma lo que origino un mayor desgaste en la parte central, con los trastes puestos al medir esta derecho, pero al verlo de perfil se nota el desgaste en la parte central del diapasón, mi pregunta es si es posible quitar el diapasón, cambiarlo por otro y retrastear, o volverlo a lijar hasta dejarlo derecho y retrastear. Agradeceré tu consejo.

    • @Paoson_Woodworking
      @Paoson_Woodworking  9 лет назад +1

      Hola jorge, cuando hablas de cambiar el diapasón me imagino que es encolado y no de arce macizo...si es asi, puedes despegarlo con calor, primero sacas los trastes y luego le das calor con una plancha poco a poco e introduciendo una espátula o algo similar para ir tirando de el.
      De todas formas, si no es demasiado puede que tenga solucion sin llegar a eso, sacando trastes, enderezando alma y volviendo a lijar el diapason, dejandolo recto y con su radio.

    • @JorgeAReyes-nq9rh
      @JorgeAReyes-nq9rh 9 лет назад

    Exelente vídeo y perfecto trabajo ! Una consulta , mi guitarra tiene los trastes 3 al 8 un poco gastados y me está dando problemas a trasteo y pierde sustein , los demás están en mejor estado , que es mejor hacer , reemplazar los trastes gastados o disminuir la altura de todos ? O reentrastar ? Gracias desde ya !

    • @Paoson_Woodworking
      @Paoson_Woodworking  6 лет назад +1

      hola Juan, sin poder ver la guitarra es difícil decirte algo, depende de cada caso. Si los demás están en muy buen estado a veces compensa cambiar solo los que están mal. Si todos están un poco gastados y los que mencionas aún más, puede que con un nivelado en general soluciones el problema
