How Kehinde Bankole Triumphed Over Funke Akindele & Made Toyin Abraham's Day

Nollywood's finest, #KehindeBankole, has always been one of our favourite actresses on screen, taking challenging roles and delivering Oscar-worthy performances that have us glued to the very end. But the beautiful and reserved diva has barely gotten a nod in the entertainment industry for over two decades. Even though the 39-year-old has become one of the most sought-after talents in and out of Nigeria. Finally, on May 11 2024, Kenny Banks received her flowers at the 10th Edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards. The multi-talented actress won the Best Actress category for her critically acclaimed role in the movie Adire.
Unfortunately, Funke Akindele fans and supporters have been blowing hot on social media, insisting that she was more deserving of the award, among others, for her record-breaking film, 'A Tribe Called Judah'. The actress lost all five nominations, including the Best Lead Actress category, despite producing and acting in the first Nigerian movie to gross over 1 billion Naira in cinemas in December 2023. While dragging the AMVCA organisers, Funke Akindele fans have accused them of deliberately snubbing her. Still, many #Nollywood fans have pointed out that the award was based on votes from viewers who believed Kenny Banks was more deserving of the award.
Hmmm? Who is Kehinde Bankole? Was she the most deserving of the Best Lead Actress Award? Or was Funke Akindele snubbed and robbed of her AMVCA awards?

Kehinde Bankole really deserves especially for “Sista” by Biodun Stephens, a very good Director. I haven’t watched “Adire”. I don’t know why Sista or another Biodun Stephens movie was not nominated but I respect the decision of the judges. There are very good actors that seem overlooked for many of these awards. It’s not meant to be a “commercial success” award which undoubtedly would have gone to Funke but a movie acting award. It takes nothing away from Funke’s success as a producer. Kehinde, Bimbo (who won last year), Bolaji Ogunmola, Sola Sobowale, and folks like Uzor Arukwe, Okey Ozoeshi, ESO Dike, Bimbo Manuel, and the Chief in “king of boys” & “his excellency”I forgot his name) deserve to win. They are good actors. Giving the same folks every year will defeat its purpose. Congrats to Kehinde🎉
